WHO IS AN INVESTIGATOR?

PIs have been in existence for over 150 years. A private investigator, abbreviated as PI, is also known by two other names: private detective and inquiry agent. An inquiry agent is a qualified professional who is hired by companies, a group of people or even individuals to perform investigatory services for them.

There are PIs who work for lawyers in their civil, capital punishment and also criminal defense cases. Some insurance companies have their own private detectives and if not, they hire their services to investigate claims that look suspicious before paying the claimants. There are also other private detectives who have their own private practices and hire out their services to different people.

A private detective can be hired by an investor to help them carry out investigations on due diligence on an investment firm, investment ventures, risky businesses and even on a fund manager to help them be certain that they are not investing in a Ponzi scheme or being conned. Qualified and licensed investigators who have years of experience could help save the investors from fraudulent activities. Investigators help a partner/spouse seeking divorce to find substantiating evidence that could help them settle issues concerning alimony, property disputes and child custody.

WHO IS AN INVESTIGATOR?

For investigators to operate legally in a lot of jurisdictions, they need to be licensed. Other countries on the other hand, such as Indonesia, do not recognize PI licenses. This means that organizations or individuals can start their own practice without a license. However, the PI’s can get licenses as security specialists or licenses for consultants in the gathering of information for the sake of legal operations as operating any business without a license is considered illegal. The Investigators in such countries mostly obtain their qualifications overseas. The PIs are allowed to carry firearms in some jurisdictions. This will depend if the law allows or prohibits it. A number PIs, though not all of them, were former police officers, former bodyguards, former security guards, ex-spies, and former agents of the law.

Page 8: All about the life and work of an investigator

WHO IS AN INVESTIGATOR?Even though PIs may be involved in investigating criminal or illegal activities, most of them have not been given the authority that police officers have. The only powers they possess in such cases are those of citizen’s arrest and also detainment just like other citizens have. The law requires that the investigators have evidence and detailed notes and be prepared and willing to testify in a court of law regarding any information they may have acquired on their client’s behalf. Care and caution is required as the private investigator Singapore go about performing their work. They should at all times operate within the confines of their country’s laws or they may find themselves being charged for engaging in activities regarded as unlawful and criminal.

WHO IS AN INVESTIGATOR?

The job of PIs requires patience, resilience, tact, and long irregular hours of work when carrying out surveillance work and thorough investigations. Some PIs specialize in one or a few areas of investigations. Some investigators deal with tracing alone. Others deal in ECM, that is, electronic counter measures; this line of work involves dealing with unwanted surveillance in classified areas such as boardrooms. The PIs locate the bugged areas of the room and gets rid of the devices. Some PIs are corporate investigators and specialize in the protection of trade secrets and also intellectual property, anti-fraud matters, anti-piracy, investigations on due diligence, computer forensics issues and infringement of copyright issues. A person with a background in business may decide to specialize in the area of financial investigations.

WHO IS AN INVESTIGATOR?There are also store private detectives who are hired to help curb the vice of shoplifting and also employee theft that is very rampant in many stores. Many casinos also hire investigators to help them in investigating crimes, or illegal winnings in casinos.

IMPORTANCE OF AN INVESTIGATOR

Investigators have become very important in day to life of not just people but also agencies for various purposes. The major or general reason being the fact they assist their clients dig for information that might seem not to exist yet in the real sense does exist. A private investigator Singapore performs a number of services that help different people in different areas. Here are why they are important.

www.sk.com.sg

Page 12: All about the life and work of an investigator

CHILD SUPPORT

There are so many people who have a pending child support that they cannot collect. This is primarily because the debtors are evasive and hence untouchable in the sense that they do not have any assets in their names, they work for cash hence do not operate their bank accounts and if they have, the accounts are not in their name and they drive with an invalid or suspended license. Trying to get a hold of collectable assets requires an investigator. Highly qualified PIs use extensive surveillance to follow the person everywhere they go and find out where he/she works and under the pre-text use very effective methods to get the contacts of that person. The client, using the reliable information presented by the PI, can then contact the relevant authority so that they can issue garnishments.

ADOPTION CASES

Private Investigators in Singapore have proven very effective in helping children find their birth parents. They help re-unite families by finding a missing member of their family. Most adoption agencies do not disclose any information on the adopted children from their organizations. This information is regarded as classified however, qualified investigators with years of experience know how to get around this discreetly and obtain all the necessary information needed in finding a child’s birth parents. It can also happen vice versa in cases where mainly single mothers give away their children for adoption and later on look for them and try to claim for them or even establish a personal relationship with them.

CORPORATE MATTERSMore and more corporations are increasingly enlisting the services of private detectives to help them in investigating theft cases in the company, crimes committed by workers, managers or shareholders, employee related issues, insider trading, among other activities. Corporations have become wary of closing and signing deals. They hire PIs to conduct investigations on due diligence and perform background checks on the business partners they are dealing with.

In copyright and trademark related issues; in this era of major technological advancements, any corporation can become a victim of some form of piracy. This is considered as theft and therefore illegal. Big corporations and companies hire highly qualified and experienced investigators to help them investigate on any trademark infractions. The Investigators investigate distributors and even manufacturers who are not authorized to distribute or manufacture products belonging to the big corporations.

DEFENDING OF SUBJECTS IN CRIMINAL CASES

Criminal defense, wrongful accusation and aiding defense lawyers–a person that has been charged for committing a crime may hire a private investigator in Singapore to help them find key witnesses for their case. They may also need PIs to find incriminating evidence against other people that were also involved. It also is not uncommon to find someone wrongfully accused of a crime they did commit. In a bid to prove their innocence, these people hire the services of PIs to help them get the evidence needed to acquit them of the crime. Defense lawyers in most of their court cases hire PIs to help them in their defense trials. The investigators look for evidence that will be helpful to the lawyers in their defense.

TOOLS USED BY INVESTIGATORSAn investigator is a person who does the work of spying on others at a small fee. Since the work of an investigator is challenging, it is necessary for them to have some tools that are reliable and can facilitate their work. Apart from the tools, they also need to have the necessary personnel as well as informers who play an important role in collecting and giving out relevant information.

Some of the tools that an investigator is required to have include; a camera and a voice recorder. The camera is important to an investigator because if they are to carry out their work properly, they will have to take good pictures of their subjects. The best camera for this kind of work must have the ability to capture high quality pictures from far because in most times an investigator will have to be in hiding when taking the photos. On the other hand, the voice recorder that an investigator need is essential because they will have to record any conversations and interviews that are important for the success of the investigation. The recorder will also be important for future references like when you want to make proper transcripts of all the conversations.

www.sk.com.sg

Page 19: All about the life and work of an investigator

TOOLS USED BY INVESTIGATORSAn investigator also requires a wireless audio receiver. This tool is important to an investigator because it gives them the ability to listen in on conversations that are taking place some few meters from them. It is regarded as one of the best tools which an investigator must have. A card recorder is also an important tool that a private detective must have. A card recorder is an innovative tool that allows one to record calls that a subject makes. This tool can record all types of calls including cellular, residential and business calls.

Various computer tools are also necessary for an investigator to succeed in doing their work. The investigators require a tool like Skype which facilitates communication between them and their clients. Skype is also important because it allows communication between people who are located far apart. www.sk.com.sg

Page 20: All about the life and work of an investigator

TOOLS USED BY INVESTIGATORSThis therefore makes it easy for you to seek the services of a foreign investigator. An investigator will also require the service of some software tools which makes their work easier. You can also get software which allows an investigator to spy on the keystrokes that a subject presses when compiling emails, browsing or chatting on the internet. This therefore allows an investigator to access the subject’s online conversations and accounts.

HOW TO BECOME A PRIVATE DETECTIVE

A private detective works for businesses, attorneys, insurance companies and the public. The PI may be part of a staff of a large PI firm or have their own private practice. Some of the services they provide may be to find missing persons, gather important or crucial information for their clients, conducting investigations for attorneys in court cases and doing surveillance. For you to become an investigator, you will need the following:

You need to know who is in the field as this is your competition. The majority of professionals in this practice have mainly a law enforcement or military background. Other PIs have attained degrees in political science, business or criminal justice. If you lack the experience listed, then you need to join a detective institution. HOW TO BECOME A PRIVATE DETECTIVE

You also need to become highly efficient in searching resources available in the computer e.g. Lexis-Nexis, you need to know how to use credit checks. These two could by themselves land you a position in a PI firm.

You need to know the requirements of the job; it is essential to have very good communication skills. Also, know the duties of PIs. Some of the duties are providing investigative as well as surveillance services, carrying out field surveillance, carrying out investigations for breach of federal and also state laws, participating in manhunts and searches, preparing records and also organizing as well as maintaining them, presenting evidence in a court of law on their client’s behalf and being able to work closely with the client in order to close a case successfully.

HOW TO BECOME A PRIVATE DETECTIVE

You need to acquire special skills by either being trained in a private detective Singapore college or by a mentor who is a licensed detective and has years of experience. These special skills are in knowing how to work efficiently with computers. You should know how to get information from the internet either for free or for a fee regarding the suspect’s whereabouts, their address and also their assets. You should also know how to get important information useful for the case from the suspect’s computer and know how to carry out surveillance using a special computer program.

You can become a PI by getting employed by an investigative firm that is licensed. Most jurisdictions require that those employed in licensed investigative firms be registered with a licensing authority. Once registered by the state, you legally become recognized as an investigator. You should always remember that to qualify as a licensed PI, it is mandatory that you fulfill the different licensing requirements in the jurisdiction that you plan to work in.www.sk.com.sg

Page 24: All about the life and work of an investigator

HOW TO BECOME A PRIVATE DETECTIVE

Becoming a PI largely relies on the reputation you have built for yourself. You need to have performed well with worthy results and also have testimonials to back you up. This is because clients will not solely be convinced by your professional qualifications. Quite a number of detectives have clients streaming in as a result of the reputation they have even though they do not possess professional qualifications.

If it is mandatory to get an investigator’s license in your jurisdiction, then you need to apply for one. If you have no clue on where to get one, the local police station or even a well established detective agency could guide you on where to go.

TYPES OF INVESTIGATORS AND THEIR ROLES

Investigators have been in this profession for more than 150 years. They are also known as PIs, inquiry agents or private detectives. A private detective Singapore is a licensed professional who is hired by corporations, establishments and the general public to provide them with investigatory services. There are different types of investigators who offer different services to their clients. Whereas some investigators specialize in one area of investigation, others are trained to offer more than one service. This also applies to the investigative agencies with some specializing in certain areas and others having different detectives specialized in different arenas of this industry. Some of the most common detective services you can be provided by an investigative agency are as discussed below.

Page 26: All about the life and work of an investigator

SURVEILLANCE INVESTIGATORSRegardless of the type of investigation, surveillance is a crucial part of all investigative services or even solutions. This is quite a good specialty especially for investigators who have learnt the art of following suspects discreetly without being caught. Surveillance can be done by one person although team work in such instances tends to produce better results. An example of surveillance work is in a case where a PI is investigating a worker’s comp claim to find out whether or not it is fraud. The surveillance investigator’s role in this case would be to determine whether he/ she is in the physical condition that he/ she is claiming to be in. This can only be accomplished through close monitoring of the individual at all times. Surveillance investigators know how to access and search public records for any leads that could help their cases. They also have some of the latest and best surveillance equipment to facilitate the collection of data or even information. Actually, all investigators irrespective of area of specialty, must have and know how to use the surveillance equipment.

INSURANCE INVESTIGATORS

These types of private investigators work just like all the others, with their work involving surveillance of cases involving insurers or insurance companies and their clients who are the beneficiaries. The investigators are charged with the role of investigating personal or automobile accident claims that an insurance company is faced with. The PIs will need to investigate and see if the people involved in accidents are really as injured as they claim. The PI will also need to establish if the hurt individual(s) has injuries arising out of a course covered by the insurance company. For claims involving fire or theft cases, the detective will need to find out whether the policyholder was responsible for either the fire or theft cases and simply wants to rip off the insurance company. This may involve questioning close friends or people who may be involved in one way or another, checking their bank accounts and trying to follow any leads that might be crucial. There are so many approaches that can be used to find out if insurance claims are legitimate.

Page 28: All about the life and work of an investigator

CORPORATE INVESTIGATORSThese investigations cover many different areas. Detectives in this field can help corporations build up a defense case on claims of wrongful termination of an employee. This type of PI can also investigate whether someone is selling or even compromising the proprietary information of the company to a rival business. Other things that could be investigated on in this area are claims of sexual harassment at the work place, internal theft by management or staff, piracy and any other problem that the corporation may have. Whereas some corporations have corporate detectives working for them full time to help monitor crimes planned or even committed against the corporation, others only hire these professionals when need be.

Page 29: All about the life and work of an investigator

FORENSIC INVESTIGATORS

These types of detectives are highly qualified professionals who thoroughly go through all records of transactions in an establishment to see if there are malpractices such as siphoning of company money or whether a department or branch of the company is operating a Ponzi scheme. Most forensic investigators specialize in this area so much is demanded in order for one to be an expert in this field.

CIVIL INVESTIGATORSThese are a branch of investigators who in most cases also double up as a domestic private detective in Singapore. In some domestic investigations, no court cases are involved. The clients may just want to know the truth and find closure to give them the strength, courage and push that they need to move on or start a new chapter in their lives. Other times, spouses have court cases and need to find evidence against their partners in order to win hefty divorce settlements, gain claim to assets, get alimony or win custody of their child/ children. The civil investigators are required to gather any useful and incriminating evidence to help their client win the court case. Other duties that these PIs carry out are defending lawsuits and investigating a person’s assets, doing background checks for potential employees; this is however considered illegal unless the potential employee signs a release form giving consent for a background check to be conducted on them prior to employment.

SKIP TRACING INVESTIGATORS

These PIs deal mainly with database issues. They deal with absconding debtors who owe money to different parties. The creditors hire the skip tracing private eye to track down these debtors. The PIs work is to carry out surveillance in order to track these individuals down. Many of the debtors usually owe large sums of money and when they run away, they may put their bank accounts in different names, work in places that pay cash, and not renew their driving license in order not to be traced. Professional PIs with experience use whatever means they can to find them, find their location and addresses and find where they work so they can serve them with the necessary paperwork to get them to pay off their debts or report them to the relevant authority.

Page 32: All about the life and work of an investigator

CRIMINAL INVESTIGATORSThese investigators specialize in matters of the law and scene of crime investigations. The PIs interview suspects, witnesses and also victims if they are in a position to. The criminal investigators work on a number of criminal cases such as murder cases, white-collar crimes, kidnapping, robbery and any other criminal case. The investigators have to apply surveillance techniques such as wiretapping, taking photographs, going undercover and even tracking down stolen goods in order to get substantial and crucial evidence that could help bring the case they are investigating to a close. The work of these investigators also involves analyzing the information gathered in an attempt to find logical conclusions. Some criminal investigators may work in the crime laboratories in order to analyze the evidence collected. After analyzing, the investigators usually write down detailed and professional reports and they may later on be required to present their reports and any other evidence they may be in possession of in a court of law on behalf of their client.

Many of these PIs work for individual lawyers or are hired by law firms

RETAIL INVESTIGATORSThey work in hotels, bars, casinos and even stores. Their work involves keeping the property of guests visiting these establishments safe. In stores, PIs help curb the vice of shoplifting and employee theft. The kind of investigators who help in the retail stores to monitor the place so that those who steal from them can be caught are known as mystery shoppers. They pose as other shoppers when in the real sense they are just monitoring the activities of those doing the real shopping. This allows them to easily spot those trying to shoplift any items from the store. These two offenses are very rampant in stores and cause substantial losses to the owners. In casinos, the PIs help to keep the players’ winnings safe and keep petty thieves away. The investigators are also tasked with ensuring that the players are not using illegal means to secure winnings. In bars, the detective private observes if all transactions are being carried out at the cash register. They have the authority to apprehend petty thieves and persons trying to steal from the hotels, bars, casinos and stores. In some of these establishments they are tasked with preparing the security, prevent any kind or form of loss and when necessary, testify on their client’s behalf in a court of law.

MATRIMONIAL INVESTIGATORSThese kinds of detectives deal with marital issues of cheating spouses. It is no surprise that the number of those seeking these services is increasing on a daily basis. Due to the increase in technology and improvement of ways of life, cheating nowadays take place through various platforms such as mobile devices and the internet. Use of chat services has become a very common means of cheaters communicating with their lovers since unlike other means such as mobile phones, it is quite difficult for anyone to find evidence left in the chat programs and unless you are a professional in using the IT-related programs and hardware. Though, digging for such information is not as difficult as it might seem. The investigators dealing with such matters have the relevant skills and equipment or tools needed in order to access such services. Apart from finding evidence of cheating in computer systems, matrimonial investigators also trail the spouses suspected of cheating and special surveillance equipment used to collect evidence.

PSYCHIC INVESTIGATORSThough these kind of Singapore private investigators are few, they do exist. These are psychics who have real life premonitions of happenings and in some countries across the globe, they have been trained to help solve mysterious crimes by identifying the real culprits.

COMPUTER CRIME INVESTIGATORS

So many people are victims of various cyber crimes with the most rampant being identity theft. Though these investigators have the skills to help curb such crimes, all detective private professionals are expected to have some basic knowledge of using computer systems as the modern world is fast moving towards computerized processes with everything going online.

CHALLENGES THAT DETECTIVES ENCOUNTER

A private detective regularly faces working conditions that are very challenging. Some of the challenges are as follows:

Private detectives’ work can be quite stressful. This is because their jobs involve long and irregular working hours, spending a lot of hours outside the office doing field work and being involved in confrontations regularly. This kind of lifestyle that always puts the detectives under pressure may affect their personal lives.

Some investigators such as insurance or fidelity investigators work primarily outside their offices in very harsh terrains that have unfavorable weather conditions. They work for extended hours outdoors when conducting surveillance. These harsh weather conditions may negatively affect the ability of the PIs to conduct their investigations effectively.

Page 41: All about the life and work of an investigator

CHALLENGES THAT DETECTIVES ENCOUNTER

Detectives have the privilege of accessing classified government information. These detectives also receive training, equipment for carrying out investigations, vehicles to help them in surveillance and firearms free of charge. In contrast, it’s illegal for PIs to access classified government data. Private detectives also have to buy their own investigative equipment, pay for their training, pay for their propriety databases and find their own means of transport. Because of the funding differences, public investigators have an upper hand when it comes to training and getting highly sophisticated equipment as compared to the PIs.

Detectives overwork themselves. This is because of the nature of their work. Their working hours are mainly dictated by the cases they are working on and their clients. In order to crack a case, they may be required to work from very early in the morning to very late at night doing surveillance and undercover work. These extended hours don’t exempt them from working the following day even though they may be really exhausted.

www.sk.com.sg

Page 42: All about the life and work of an investigator

CHALLENGES THAT DETECTIVES ENCOUNTER

PIs have to go the extra mile and learn a lot about the legal system even though they may be swamped with work and exhausted by the long hours they have put in. This is because, they may at times be required to testify and present credible and factual information on behalf of their clients in a court of law.Large investigation companies have cropped up and do not have the license requirements. They offer their services to the public and other establishments as well. The practice has created a situation whereby, clients do not receive very good services. This is because these investigation companies have compromised on the quality of the services that they are offering. As a result, quite a number of local investigators are losing their work as clients become wary of a private investigator sg. www.sk.com.sg

Page 43: All about the life and work of an investigator

CHALLENGES THAT DETECTIVES ENCOUNTER

A number of government regulations such as laws on audio and also video surveillance have widely affected investigators and their work. According to some detectives, these strict regulations are hampering them from carrying out investigations efficiently. The stringent laws, according to detectives, have caused them to work more slowly in solving cases.

TV movies and drama series have given clients unrealistic expectations of the standards that detectives are supposed to have. In the real sense, this is impossible to match up to. It is hard to convince these clients, who already have an idea of what type of equipment the PIs should have and how their cases should be handled, otherwise.

www.sk.com.sg

Page 44: All about the life and work of an investigator

CHALLENGES THAT DETECTIVES ENCOUNTER

Times are hard and the economy has been tough for just about everyone. Some clients expect the Singapore Private investigator to do his/her job with less resources and limited funds and still produce the same quality work and results. In addition, quite a number of PIs are finding it difficult to get work regularly. Some are even losing their clients to larger investigative firms who are able to offer the same if not better services to clients at reduced rates. This is due to the fact that these big firms enjoy economies of scale.

CHARACTERISTIC OF A SINGAPORE PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR

An investigator is a person who possesses many characteristics. Some of these are natural while others are acquired through relevant education. Some things like data collection and analysis techniques are learnt from educational institutions while others like being truthful are natural.

www.sk.com.sg

Page 47: All about the life and work of an investigator

PERSONALITY TRAITSThe personality traits of investigators are the personal characteristics that an investigator is required to have. These traits are behavioral and vary from one person to another

Some of the personality traits that an investigator is required to have include a positive attitude. A person who has a positive attitude is always optimistic about his chances of being successful. A positive attitude shows the level of confidence that a person has on his or her job. Therefore, if you want an investigator who can give you results, you should go for one who is positive. The other thing that you should look out for is the ability of the investigator to create good relationships with those that they come into contact with. This strength is important because as an investigator, you will need to interact with various types of people who will play a big role in collecting important information for your investigation.

www.sk.com.sg

Page 48: All about the life and work of an investigator

PERSONALITY TRAITS

You should also look at the ability of the investigator to make friends and not enemies. This basically means that the investigator should be able to relate well with everyone they come across in a friendly manner. A private investigator who makes enemies risks derailing the operation especially if one of the friends who used to spy for him becomes an enemy. An investigator must have the ability to control his emotions. Being able to do this is good as it allows the investigator to relate well with all those whom they come across.

PERSONALITY TRAITSA good investigator should have good observation skills. This is because observation is the main data collection method that is used here. The investigator is supposed to observe the subjects keenly and collect the correct information which reflects the true situation on the ground. Since not all the things that an investigator is supposed to collect can be seen in plain sight, good observation skills are necessary. The investigator should also be a person who loves solving puzzles as most of the work involves complicated operations which requires good thinking and analysis. He or she should also love adventures since most of their work involves travelling to all the destinations that the subject visits. The investigator must also be a person who is trustworthy and reports the truth. Being truthful is one of the main characteristics of this profession as any small lie can lead to flawed investigations and this would be unethical.
