PRINCIPAL’S REPORT—WEEK 3

This week we are celebrating I Heart You Week at Wagga Wagga Public School. This is our

opportunity to celebrate all the special people in our lives. During the week students will be

taking time to think and talk about the people that they love and care about and finding ways to

acknowledge these special relationships throughout the week.

Each afternoon children will be engaged in a rotation of creative activities in which they will

make or create some keepsakes to share with their loved ones. This is a great time for us all to

look at the diversity of families and support networks which are unique and special to each of us

and to be thankful for those who enrich our lives.

I found these top tips to show our children how much we love them. You may like them also…..

TEN LITTLE WAYS TO SHOW YOUR CHILDREN YOU LOVE THEM

Spend time with them.

Love is spelled T-I-M-E. Spending quality one on one time with our children make them feel

much more loved than toys and lollipops. This I HEART U week, give your children a real gift, by

committing to spend 15 minutes a day with each of them. Your time together should be

technology free and uninterrupted. Let your child choose what they want to do. What ever they

choose, get involved and be in the moment. Look into their eyes, take note of the way their hair

falls on their forehead. Marvel at their laugh and drink in their spirit.

Commit to Family Rituals.

Rituals provide children with predictability, connection, a sense of identity, and give you an

opportunity to teach them values. Not to mention, rituals build memories and life long bonds.

Work to put meaning into the everyday activities. Do something together every Saturday

morning, even if it is yard work. Eat family dinner, go for walks on Sunday afternoons, read

stories together every night before bed. Incorporate rituals into your daily lives.

MERIT

CERTIFICATES

Principal’s Report continued…….

Don’t hold grudges.

It is easy to let the temper tantrums and back talk start to build up. Without even knowing it, we

hold the behaviour against our children and enter the next situation, already irritated with them.

Don’t. Let it go and start fresh each and every minute. And, don’t ever withhold affection as a

punishment.

Share yourself with your children.

Can you juggle, make funny faces, do a cartwheel? Show your kids. Let them get to know you. They

will LOVE you for it. Let them see you are fun, and normal, and exciting. Tell them stories about

growing up. Share yourself with them. It will help you remember who you are too.

Encourage them often.

We can be quick to offer praise when our children do something good. Instead of praise, offer

encouragement, whether they do well or not. Give them specific feedback about the effort and skill

they demonstrate. Be sure you encourage even when they don’t succeed. Talk about the effort,

more than the outcome.

Tell them “I love you” and give them hugs and kisses every day.

No exceptions. And not just at bed time, or when they do something good. Even if it has been one

of “those” days. Hug them anyway, love them anyway and tell them you love them. They will thrive

on the affection and reassurance. It feels good when people tell us we are loved. It is the same for

children. They need to hear it often.

Don’t multitask.

Put everything away. Stop doing the laundry, don’t text on the phone when they are trying to tell

you a story, and get down to their level. Really, really listen. You will hear so much more than their

words.

Say YES.

Do they want ice cream for lunch? Once in a while that’s okay. Do they want to play a little longer.

That’s okay too. It’s okay to bend the rules every now and again and say YES. Children can easily

feel like all we do is say No. Change things up and try to say yes to as much as you can. If you have

to say no, rephrase the answer, suggesting what they can do, or can have, instead of what they

can’t.

Be at the crossroads.

If possible, be at the crossroads of their day. When they leave for school, when they come home

from school, as they come and go between activities. This can’t always be the case for every

household. But whenever possible be available during these times. Be available to chat, and

encourage your children as you send them out the door. Be a loving and friendly face to receive

them when they walk back in the door. Be their cheerleader as they tackle the world. Pompoms

optional.

See your children as people, not objects.

Instead of seeing your children as objects or road blocks that get in the way of what you want and

need to do, like the dishes, or making a phone call, see them as people. While in the middle of

dishes, it is easy to feel like your 5 year old’s request to play Barbies is a burden. But stop for a

minute and look at things from your child’s perspective. They have hopes and dreams and fears just

like you do. Our kids don’t understand what it is like to be a mum, dad, grandparent, aunty, carer ,

as well as all the other hats we wear. If you take a minute and look at things from their perspective,

your heart will be softened and we will start to really SEE the little/or big person who is standing in

front of us.

Give your children the real gift of love, give them more of you!

BRUCE AND DENISE MORCOMBE VISIT

Tomorrow, Wednesday 21st October our Year 2 to 6 students will be

attending the Daniel Morcombe Foundation Child Safety Presentation

at Bolton Park Stadium.

This presentation will be presented by Denise and Bruce Morcombe,

the parents of Daniel who was tragically taken in 2003. They

established the Daniel Morcombe Foundation as a legacy to Daniel’s

memory and to educate and support the community to strengthen the

message of Keeping Kids Safe.

Any outstanding signed permission notes and $2 donation should be

returned to school first thing in the morning. Although not attending, any Kindergarten or Year 1 students who would like to

contribute to this fundraiser would be greatly appreciated.

STAGE 3 CANBERRA EXCURSION

Much anticipation is brewing over next week’s annual Stage 3 excursion. This year our senior travellers will be enjoying our

nation’s capital – Canberra. A very full itinerary is planned and we

wish all our students and their brave and generous teachers a

wonderful time. Thank you to Mrs Elsley, Miss Clarke, Mrs

McKenzie and Mrs Collingridge for all your hard work getting this

excursion organised and for giving up time with your families to

supervise this trip. I look forward to hearing all the exciting stories

on your safe return next week. Have a memorable time everyone

and be kind to your teachers!

Photo for the Crow Magazine

Premier’s Spelling Bee

This Friday, we are taking an aerial photo of all Wagga Wagga Public School students. It will be the front cover for this year’s Crow

Magazine. Mrs Bennett would like all students to be in their blue sports polo shirts. Any students who are not in their blue shirt

will not be in the photograph.

Mrs Bennett

The Premier’s Spelling Bee is coordinated by The Arts Unit and provides a fun and

educational way for primary school students to engage in spelling and to promote improved

Literacy in combination with the English K-6 Syllabus.

This year 42 Regional Finals were held around the state from 7 – 18 September, to find the

best spellers who will compete in the State Final on 11th November at the Eugene Goossens

Hall, ABC Centre. The Final will be broadcast live on ABC Local Radio, state-wide from 5:35

pm – 6:00 pm.

A total of 3,562 students from 939 NSW Schools have been involved in the Premier’s Spelling

Bee in 2015. Each of the 42 Regional Finals hosted on average 20 – 25 schools from the

surrounding area and had up to 50 students competing in each division. Approximately 20

remote schools participated via Video Conferencing.

WWPS would like to wish Claire all the best in the upcoming final in Sydney. We are very proud of you.

In Week 10 of Term 3 the Enviro Champs had their ice cream and guessing competition fundraiser days. They raised a massive $309! Jake

Woodhouse was our successful guesser for the competition who was closest to the 1685 skittles! From this money we purchased vegetable

seedlings and equipment for the greenhouse to help get our fabulous resource back up and running.

The boys spent a very busy day tidying, cleaning and organising the greenhouse, learning skills in transplanting tiny seedlings and how to care for

them. Keep an eye out later on in the term and in the newsletter for information about our seedling stall, when we will be selling our seedlings. All

money raised will go back into our Enviro Champion’s fund and toward propagation of more plants.

If you have any small garden pots (seedling size) at home that you would be willing to donate to our greenhouse it would be greatly appreciated.

Any donations of pots can be left with the Enviro Champ boys or Miss Clarke.

Many thanks for all your support with this valuable project.

A big thank you to all those who volunteer in our canteen each week. Apart from Kelly and Melinda, we don’t have anyone else to help to provide recess and lunch to over 400 students. We are desperately looking for volunteers to assist whenever possible. If you can help, please phone the school on 6921 3398 and ask for Kelly or Melinda. Thank you.

P&C News

A New Committee (kind of)

The P&C held it’s annual AGM last Wednesday evening and elected a committee to steer the interests of the P&C for the next 12

months. The new committee is:

P&C Committee

President: Lee Murrell

Vice President: Andrew Pigeon

Vice President: Wendy Harper

Secretary: Natalie Holmes

Treasurer: David Heazlewood

Before and After School Care

Chairperson: Kristen-Lee Campbell

Treasurer: Andrew Pigeon

Canteen

Chairperson: Wendy Harper

Treasurer: Scott Clapham

The AGM also saw the establishment of two new subcommittees for the running of the clothing pool and events co-ordination.

Clothing Pool

Michelle Wilkinson

Jo-Anne Masters

Events Co-ordinators

Petrea Pollock

Sharee Walker

The AGM also saw the last audit undertaken by Liza Byrnes. For many years, Liza has donated countless hours and her expertise to

undertaking this essential requirement of the P&C. Liza’s contributions have saved the P&C many thousands of dollars over the

years; money that has been put back into the school for all of our benefit. Thank you, Liza, for all that you have done for us.

For those of you playing P&C bingo, you will note that there are many familiar names and I thank them for their continuing

contribution to the life of the school. Particularly, I would like to thank Natalie Holmes for taking on the role of Secretary.

There are also many new names. We thank Michelle, Jo-Anne, Petrea, Sharee and Wendy for taking on more formal roles in the

running of the P&C after years of being truly great contributors to the activities of the P&C. A special welcome to Scott Clapham to

the P&C world; we are lucky to have your expertise bought to the canteen.

There are two names missing from the list above that would be familiar to everyone. For the first time in many, many years, the P&C

committee does not have Jodie Coles or Jackie Sellers fulfilling an executive position.

Jodie has held the positions of President, Vice President and Canteen co-ordinator as well as making substantial contribution to the

Before and After School Care centre. Jodie will continue to be a parent of the school next year and hopefully a keen contributor to

P&C activities but her contribution to the committee will be greatly missed.

And lastly, but by any measure, not the least, is the resignation of Jackie Sellers as P&C Secretary. Jackie’s contribution to the school

goes well beyond her role on the P&C executive, but Wednesday’s meeting saw the end of her involvement in an official capacity. To

give you a small idea of Jackie’s contribution as secretary, 5 people have now taken on the roles that were previously performed by

her.

Jackie’s family outgrows the school at the end of this year and I’m sure, because Jackie is Jackie, we will see her smiling face

contribute to the very end. If you see her around, take a moment to show your appreciation; she is truly deserving.
