Term 1 Week 6 6 March 2018

THE BIG VEGIE CRUNCH:

Thanks to more than 292 schools across NSW, we absolutely smashed last year's record - 47,920 students crunched at 10am on Thursday 1st March with a further 11,915 students crunching at other times over Vegetable Week. Students were able to sample a delightful range of fresh vegetables as you can see from the photos below.

KITCHEN NEWS:

Thank you to all the wonderful volunteers in the kitchen garden over the past weeks. This fortnight the theme is packing a healthy nude food lunchbox with yummy recipes such as: Best Ever Muffins, Potato & Spinach Frittata, Tropical Granola Bars, Chicken Caesar Salad Wraps & Tuna & Zucchini Slice.

GARDEN NEWS:

Ben welcomes any help you can offer in the garden.

The worms in our worm farms are multiplying quickly due to HB9's wonderful help with feeding and maintenance of the farms.

Students are gradually working towards their Wheelbarrow & Tool Licences in their respective garden classes.

A fantastic potato harvest last week with students digging up over 40kg from one of the school garden beds. They will be used in the kitchen in the Potato & Spinach Frittata in the coming weeks. Yummo!

The pigs are growing fast too.

Look forward to seeing you in the kitchen and/or garden. Cheers, Gaye Dufty, Community Project Coordinator KINDERGARTEN READING PARENT INFORMATION SESSION: On Thursday 8 March, 5.30 – 6.30pm we will be holding a reading

information workshop for parents. This workshop will address:

How reading is taught at Aldavilla,

Provide an overview of the skills and strategies that are required to learn to read and

How you can support your child with their home reading. A note has gone home and if you are interested in participating in the reading information session, please complete the slip and return it to school by Tuesday 6 March. SCHOOL PHOTOS:

School photos will be taken on Thursday 15th March. Photo envelopes

have been handed out to all students. Sibling envelopes are available at the school office. Envelopes may be sent into school before photo day.

The PICITUP program is designed to

encourage and support individuals and community groups who do litter clean-ups, and provide data to help Midwaste and local Councils plan better litter prevention projects.

ABOUT PICITUP

The program starts on Monday 5th March. Here’s how it works: 1. Sign-up at your local Council office and collect a free Litter Kit 2. Collect litter using the Litter Kit on your daily walks, on weekend family outings, at organised group clean-up days, or any other time 3. Fill in the data form in the booklet to record your clean-ups, and use this to complete the quarterly MIDWASTE litter clean-up survey 4. MIDWASTE will use your survey data to help plan future litter reduction projects

WHY JOIN PICITUP?

•Free reusable equipment to help with your clean-ups •Help stop litter by providing data and feedback for planning litter prevention projects •Track the progress of PICITUP on the website www.midwaste.org.au/picitup •Find out about more ways to reduce litter and illegal dumping in our PICITUP newsletters

Each Litter Kit contains: •One great reusable upcycled litter collection shoulder bag made by Boomerang Bags (see attached picture) •4 additional litter collection bag/sacks •2 pairs of gloves •PICITUP booklet with program information, safety tips and data forms

Term 1 Week 6 6 March 2018

PREMIER’S DEBATING CHALLENGE:

On Thursday 1 March, Teliyah K, Bridee V, Jack V, Alex R, Noah L and Julian A headed to Laurieton Public School to attend the Premier's Debating Challenge workshop. The students learnt about three important 'Ms': Method (the rules of debating), Matter (how to develop stronger arguments and rebuttal) and Manner (public speaking tips). The students were engaged by the humorous delivery of the material and overcame nerves to bravely participate in debating games and a mini debate. The students will now participate in the Premier's Debating Challenge, a statewide competition which aims to develop students' public speaking and critical thinking skills. Thank you to Sharon K and Tanya V for driving the students to Laurieton. LNC CRICKET:

Congratulations to Tom P and Cade B who were successful in making the Lower North Coast Cricket Team. We are very proud and wish them the best of luck.

CANTEEN HELPERS ARE NEEDED!

The Canteen operates 5 days per week and offers a variety of nutritious and tasty options for students’ morning recess and lunches. All profits go directly to the school for resources for your children. However, this year there have not been enough Volunteers to sustain it.

All food is prepared daily in accordance to the Healthy School Canteens guidelines. This requires a lot of effort and the Canteen is a very busy place. Volunteers are needed this Friday, 9 March. Unfortunately if there are not enough helpers, the available Menu will have to be restricted.

Even if you only have an hour to spare, there is always something to do. Please see Madonna, telephone the school on 6563 1141 or email [email protected]. Your help will be greatly appreciated and your children just love to see a familiar face. HARMONY DAY: “Everyone Belongs”

Wednesday, 21st MARCH 2018 Harmony Day is about community participation, inclusiveness and respect – celebrating the different cultures that make Australia a great place to live. Join in the fun and dress up in your most “Outrageous Original Orange Outfit”. Prizes will be awarded for the best outfit for each stage. Every student will receive a wrist band with a pantry or garden item request (that will be handed out closer to the date) to support the ongoing costs of the Kitchen Garden Program eg; packet of vegetable seeds or seedlings, pantry items (your choice or as indicated on wristband), cleaning products, paper towel, tea towels, dried herbs, vegetable/herb plants or a gold coin donation. Start collecting your wild and wacky orange outfits to be part of this fun day while supporting our wonderful Kitchen Garden Program and celebrating Harmony Day – “Everyone Belongs”. The 2018 theme is “Growing Together in Harmony”. CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY:

HB1 and HB12 participated in Clean up Australia Day on Friday 2 March. Well done to all students who participated.
