A Message from the Principal
With holidays so close and spring in the air, I hope that you are feeling the
winter doldrums subsiding. School concludes for Term 3 on Friday 28
September. School resumes for all staff and students on Monday 15 October.
Staff development days are held at the end of Term 4, once students have
finished for the year.
Currently, the school’s Sports Committee, in consultation with the school
executive, is undertaking a review of the policy and school procedures governing sport at our
school. I appreciate the role sport plays at our school and support much of what already
exists, but can see a need for streamlining and simplifying some aspects of it. Albury Public
School currently offers a wide range of opportunities for students to participate in extra
curricula sporting trials and gala days. Organisation for these events and opportunities is very
labour intensive for organising teachers, on top of their very busy teaching and administrative
workloads, and often results in some students missing a significant number of school learning
days to participate. Whilst the importance of sport in the curriculum and a child’s life is well –
known, the business of schools is academic performance. The School Sports Committee is,
through genuine consultation and feedback, trying to streamline the processes and set some
ground rules that are less disruptive and time consuming. Any parents/carers who would like to
contribute to the review are, again, invited to contact Kirsty Sheridan or Mark Neil to further
this work. An information session for interested parents will be scheduled for early next term to
further determine the direction we will head in from 2019. Parents/carers are also invited to
participate in a very short online survey at the following link. Please take a few minutes to send
us your thoughts by completing the survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/9Q58QV3
The Year 6 farewell dinner, disco and graduation will be held on Tuesday 18 December 2018.
Parents/carers of Year 6 students interested in assisting with the organisation of this year’s
event are asked to join us for a meeting on Tuesday 25 September from 6:45pm, prior to the
next P&C meeting at 7:30pm. An expression of interest form was sent home with Year 6
students last week for parents/carers to nominate their interest. Further details are available
from Jess Brooker or Tegan Sutton.
Change to Student Recreation Times: After a thorough evaluation of options, consideration of
parent/carer feedback and extensive consultation with staff, it has been decided to change
student recreation times, commencing on Day 1 of Term 4. School start and finish times, and
the total length of recreation times, will remain unchanged. Lunch will commence at 11am,
with an eating time of 10 minutes. Lunch playtime will be from 11:10-11:45am. Afternoon
recess will be from 1:10-1:40pm. It is anticipated that this necessary and important realignment
of our school day will deliver a range of benefits for student wellbeing and engagement.
Changes to break times will be complemented by increased recreation activity options and
incremental improvements to playground areas, which are currently being developed by the
staff Playground Working Committee. This change will necessitate important adjustments to
the canteen menu and online ordering cut off times. A new canteen menu and overview of
changes will be distributed in hardcopy next Wednesday.
First Day Term 4
Teachers will be discussing the new playground arrangements with their classes in these last two
weeks of term in order to prepare them for the change. Families may find it beneficial to speak
about what is in students' lunchboxes and the expectations around when it will be eaten. For
nutritious lunchbox ideas see https://www.healthykids.nsw.gov.au/parents-carers/healthy-eating-
and-drinking/lunch-box-ideas.aspx
Last week the staff professional learning included Positive Behaviour for Leaning (PBL). PBL is not a
punitive system but explicitly teaches the required and expected behaviours of a successful
student.
PBL proactively teaches the behaviours we expect of students as we can’t always assume that
students know and understand what is expected of them. The school will develop values,
otherwise known as rules, for acceptable behaviour. It is important that parents/carers are aware
of these behaviour expectations and reinforce them at home as well. This information will be sent
home as it is implemented in the school and classrooms. The changes with the playground and
eating times complement the introduction of PBL.

Rugby tackle gala day
Last Tuesday about 25 year five and six girls went to a Rugby League gala day at Sarvaas Park. After we
hopped off the bus we did a clinic including how to fall, how to tackle, how to kick and the rugby rules.
When we finished our clinic, Albury Public were split into three teams. Team 1 played Thurgoona 2,
Team 3 played Thurgoona 1 whilst Team 2 had a break. In this first round Team 1 achieved a victory,
but sadly Team 3 did not, but they tried their best. In round two, Albury Team 2 played Albury Team 1,
while Team 3 played Lavington East P.S. Sadly Team 2 lost against Team 1, and Team 3 lost as well.
For Team 2’s second game they won against Thurgoona. After playing, everyone had a chance to vote
on who they thought did the best in the team. The winners were Charlotte Laird, Tyra Phothisomphane
and Ryleigh Hogan. Their award included a drink bottle, a hat and the bag it was in. Mr Takle also
handed out his own MVP awards. The first one was for Ruby McCaig and the second one was for Kirra
Blackmore. Then we jumped on the bus back to school.

The Tell Them From Me parent survey
Please complete the parent/carer survey. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known
to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.
The survey is now live and can be done any time until Friday October 26. Although
To access the survey for our school go to: https://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/albp1
More information about the survey is available at:

The Tell Them From Me student survey
You may remember that our students also participated in a Tell Them From Me student survey in Term 1 this year. Our school,
like many other public schools in the state, will give students the opportunity to participate in the survey again. Asking students
to complete the survey twice in one year allows us to identify trends in student responses as well as track engagement and
motivation across the school year.
If you do not want your child or children to participate, please complete and return the non-consent form, available from the
Front Office or on our website by Friday 28 September.
A copy of the non-consent form is available from the following link:

Canteen Roster Term 3 Weeks Nine—Ten
P&C Canteen News
Spring has arrived and, like the trees, the
canteen is blossoming with fresh lighter fare to
feed our fabulous kids.
We have delicious cupcakes and fruit muffins
available at recess for only 50c. Get in quick
as these are flying out the window (they’re
almost literally that light and fluffy).
Amazing Amy is in this week again cooking up
a scone storm, so bring your money and look
out for her baked goodies of goodness on
Friday!
A very big special thanks to our Canteen
Captains who are so generous with their
lunchtimes: Isla, Rebecca, Piper and Tyler.
Please consider volunteering for a few hours,
it’s lots of fun, a great way to support our
school community and get to know other
parents, the staff and students.
