A message from the Principal
Week 9 Term 2
Welcome to the end of Week 9, our second last week of Term 2.
On Tuesday of this week the P&C met for the June meeting. There is something exciting
happening in the school grounds. The P&C and the Stronger Country Communities Fund are co-
funding a major project which will improve the appearance of our playground and create a rest,
play, learning and performance space in our school grounds. Some of the 100 year old asphalt
will be removed creating a new grass area and will help to reduce the load on Albury’s storm
water drainage by absorbing the rainwater that currently goes down the drain. Come and find
out what is proposed, how it fits with the long term master plan for the school and have your say
on some of the decisions that are yet to be made such as tree and plant types. Wednesday July
3rd, 3:30pm in the 5/6LS classroom (lower level of the lodge). Everyone is welcome.
Tomorrow, Charlize Raudino and Madison French, two talented Year 6 students, will be
competing in the annual NAIDOC public speaking competition at James Fallon High School.
Albury Public School has never been represented in this competition before and the girls are
excited but nervous. The topic for this public speaking challenge is “let’s work together for a
shared future” and is presented collaboratively by an Indigenous and a non-Indigenous student.
Good luck girls.
Semester 1 reports are being sent home next Monday. The mid-year reports are a snapshot of
where your child is at in relation to the syllabus and the standard. The syllabuses are written to a
“C” which is proficiency for the age/stage. This translates to “sound” on the report. Students
achieving an “A” or “B” (High/Outstanding) are working well beyond their age/stage, as
measured by the standards. Parents/carers are encouraged to make a mutually agreeable time
to meet with the classroom teacher if they wish to discuss the report or your child’s progress.
The choir is competing in the Albury Wodonga
Eisteddfod today, Thursday. The choir has been
performing in a few locations around Albury
recently to get some performance practice. Last
week they performed at St Matthews during
Tuesday Tunes. Good luck to the choir.
Congratulations to the significant achievements of
Jericho Ellao, who received three overall awards for
music at this year's Eisteddfod:
- Overall highest individual score for one piece (11-
13 years Instrumental Aggregate Award),
- Judy Haddow Memorial Prize, and
- Best Instrumentalist (14 Years and Under).
What an astounding achievement Jericho, well
done!

Our AFL team competed in the Paul Kelly Cup yesterday evening. The team played one final
against St Pats at Albury sportsground. They won 35 to 20. It was a tough and very competitive
game but the team were clear champions. The team was commended on their sportsmanship
and “tough”, skilful performance by a young school team. The team will now compete in the
regional final on Friday (tomorrow) in Wagga Wagga. The winner from Friday’s competition will
play in the state final on GWS grounds (Giants Stadium) in Sydney in early August. Best of luck to
the team.
Further paperwork was sent home yesterday for the Year 5 camp to Ballarat and Melbourne.
The excursion is from Wednesday 31 July – 2 August, inclusive and will cost $370.00. If parents/
carers are electing to pay in instalments, the next instalment of $100.00 is due on 28 June.
Education Week is Week 3 of Term 3, week beginning 5 August. This year, APS will have open
day on Wednesday 7 August. There will be a number of different activities and events occurring
on this day, including open classrooms and student-led conferencing and our NAIDOC
celebrations. More details to follow.
Albury Public School has recently been fitted with a new WiFi system as part of the Connecting
Country Schools program and funded by the NSW Department of Education. The new system
allows a significantly faster internet service to be connected to the school, giving increased
connectivity in speed per student, allowing for the continual growth in constantly evolving IT-
enabled learning initiatives.
As part of this initiative, the IT connection between the Annexe and West is to be upgraded with
fibre-optic and electricity upgrades are also proposed to be carried out where required, to
allow for the increased demand on the IT systems.
Quote of the week: “A dull mind gets bored easily. A curious mind expands forever”. Maxime Lagace
I hope you have an enjoyable last week of Term 2.

Lost Books!
There is a growing collection of books returned to the library that appear to be the
children’s personal copies. Unfortunately, they do not have names. If your children are
missing personal books, it may be worthwhile coming to check them out.

The girls are playing very well in a tough competition and while they haven’t
won a game as yet they are definitely holding their own and should be proud
of themselves.

We’ve got lots of hot food from the canteen to keep the littlies warm at the end of term. Our
specials this week and next are golden crunchy homemade potato crisps and a favourite winter
warmer, delicious potato bake.
Thanks so much to all our helpers, it’s so good to see a full roster. Let’s keep it up next term.
Thanks also to all the hard work our canteen captains have put in this term. They are amazing
and we really appreciate them giving up their lunch times to help out.
We are sad to farewell our wonderful, cheerful Emma Fraser from her role in the canteen who is
moving onto greener pastures. We wish her all the best. We’re happy to announce that Billie
Welsford and Jacquie Galvin-Warner will be joining Jude Sowden as canteen supervisors from
Wednesdays to Fridays. Please come in and say hello to the new crew.
