Scrapping of K -Tel tapesK -Tel International has lost a court bid thatwould have halted the destruction of severalmillion albums and tapes. The tapes, whichare stored in Winnipeg and Torontowarehouses, were seized when the Bank ofMontreal placed the Winnipeg firm intoreceivership by calling in a $1.1 -million loanin March of 1985.

The inventory was turned over toClarkson Gordon, the receiver, who has beenpaying monthly storage costs of $4,795 forthe two million plus, albums and almost amillion cassettes and eight -track tapes.

The receiver has apparently been tryingto sell the stock, but he has met oppositionfrom the Canadian Recording IndustryAssociation (CRIA) and the CanadianMusical Reproduction Rights Agency (CR-RMA), who are concerned about the pay-ment of royalties.

In handing down a written decision, Mr.

Thorogood chalks one upfor Squash HungerGeorge Thorogood, who kicked off his NorthAmerican tour at Kingswood Music Theatre(Toronto) on July 2, donated a portion of theproceeds from his concert to Squash Hunger.

While in Toronto, Thorogood waspresented with a platinum award for hisalbum, Born To Be Bad, which he autograph-ed and donated to Squash Hunger to be in-cluded in their Celebrity Rock 'n' Roll Auc-tion to be held in October.

Squash Hunger is a volunteer organiza-tion made up of music industry people, whoare concerned with the plight of the homelessand hungry. Over the past two years theorganization has raised funds, throughvarious events, which has been donated to theSecond Harvest and the Daily Bread Food -bank.

Squash Hunger's President Mary AnnFarrell and Gerrard Kennedy of the DailyBread Foodbank were on hand to receive thedonation from Thorogood.

at disposition of receiverJustic Wilfred DeGraves of the ManitobaCourt of Queen's Bench declared that thereceiver could destroy the records and tapes,

There wasmuch acceptance and interst from the mediaand the music industry last year, and it's ex-pected that this year, with the inclusion ofMuchMusic filming a Big Ticket Special, theevent will become even more popular. Thewinning band will be guaranteed a minimumof one song, which will be shown nationally.

To participate in the province -widetalent search, bands must submit a cassette ofa minimum of three songs to: Jailhouse RockIII Contest, attention: Fred Chester, Saskat-chewan Penitentiary, Box 160, Prince Albert,Saskatchewan. S6V 5R6.

Says Chester, "We stress that the pointof this contest is to search for originality anda band who wants to move from the bar cir-cuit etc.to bigger audiences."

Besides the Big Ticket Special opportuni-ty, the winner will receive a CBC (Regina)Radio studio recording session to be airedprovincially, a Fender 112 amplifier (valuedat $700) from Gordie Brandt's Music Centrein Prince Albert, and two Fury Guitar ZP20pickups (valued at $200) from H.E.L. Musicin Saskatoon.

Three-tier CD discount offered by CapitolWith retail priorities obviously geared towardthe compact disc market, Capitol RecordsCanada is offering what the label's VicePresident, Sales, Al Andruchow, describes as

Capitol recording artist David Wilcox receives gold forhis Breakfast At The Circus album from Capitol's VicePresident of Sales, Al Andruchow, after the first ofthree successful nights at Toronto's Ontario Place.

"one of the most attractive"compact discprograms available. The program includes athree-tier discount of 12 percent, 17 percent, and 31 percent off -invoice.

There are a total of 198 titles involved.Along with Capitol's 60 Minutes series, thenew program is beefed up with titles by theBeatles, Glass Tiger, Paul McCartney, PinkFloyd, Bob Seger, and Anne Murray, toname a few. As Andruchow points out, mostof the product involved is catalogue titles.

Andruchow hastens to add however, that "Hit product seems to be holding itsown," but because of the time of the year,"catalogue product needs that extra exposureat retail."

He continues with, "This type of offershould create a positive reaction from theconsumer, and depending on the results, thisprogram may be a pre-emption to a multi -tierpricing policy in the future," concluding with"Compilations, extra track packaging, andspecial pricing is the way to go in exposing thetremendous musical value in CapitolRecords' back catalogue."

whenever he felt it was necessary. "Thereceiver is legally entitled to destroy the in-ventory," said DeGraves, continuing with,"It's not the role of the courts to take over ajob that is best performed by the receiver."

AOR coming under fire . . .!In the recentRock & .Roll Confidential, there was an in-teresting article about Album Oriented Radio(AOR), the author points out how this radioformat has retreated into "oldies and classicrock" which has created a huge vacum. Hedoesn't see AOR dying, but he does see thedevelopment of what he describes as "somesystematic format that uses the current col-lege/alternative base," which will "cash inon the musical loyalties developed there withstronger signals, more programmingresearch, and .bigger promotional budgets."You can be sure there will be a similardevelopment in Canada .. . in fact it's begin-ning to happen now. By the way, WarrenCosford, now the Operations Manager atWDRE in NYC, sent us the above piece. (EC:But we work by a different set of rules inCanada, don't we . . . ?)

Premiere at the O'Keefe ... Big night forthe fans of Rocky Horror Picture Show whenTim Curry opened in the touring productionof Me And My Girl. The show is parlourfarce, set to music and an evening of Englishmusic hall songs and humour. One of the bestevenings of entertainment to grace that stagein a long time. Garth Drabinsky, the czar ofthe Cineplex empire, has now branched outinto the legitimate stage, and threw an even-ing that, although it was lacking in thebeautiful people of the theatre crowd, it was afirst class event. The food at the party afterthe show, which was catered by the O'Keefe'sown chef was outstanding and plentiful, butthe crowd at the party was small and seemedto be confused by the gathering. There was aspread that could have fed twice as many. Itjust didn't have that opening night feeling.

COVER STORY - by Graeme Boyce

Wiedlin promotes animal rights with Fur album"What it's all about," says Jane Wiedlin, "ispeople accepting responsibility for their ownactions." Yet, unfortunately, the public atlarge is just too far removed from reality tocontemplate beyond choosing what kind ofsteak to eat or which fur to wear, and it is thislatter topic that the former Go Go tackles onher latest release, actually titled Fur.

Watching the first single, Rush Hour, climb steadily through the charts each week, knowing that Stephen Hague was at the helm, puts the album's commercial appeal intoperspective clearly. In this regard Wiedlinis confident her message will reach a muchgreater audience than did her previous solodebut, released on IRS Records, as were theGo Go's albums.

"With IRS," Wiedlin explains, "havingbeen in the Go Gos and having trouble withthem over the years, with trying to get paid. Imean . . . there was always one hassle afteranother, so it seemed most of the time likethey were the enemy. There was always thiswar going on between the artist and therecord company, even though artistically theygave me a lot of freedom.

"IRS was good in that they let me dowhatever I wanted," she continues. "Theynever tried to approve the songs or the art-work or anything like that. I was basically leftto my own devices. With EMI, they're a lotmore involved right from the inception of theproject, and I like that better, because nowthat I don't have a band, it's good to be ableto bounce ideas off different people."

Between the two projects though,Wiedlin spent time working in movies, on hernew songs and for the animal rights move-ment as an activist demonstrating and get-ting arrested for her efforts. Through theseendeavours she was thus able to get a better

-grasp on her career and her aspirations as anartist.

"I really don't think people are intrin-sically bad, but I do think a lot of times wejust don't take responsibility for our actions.Like a woman, she doesn't think about theblood or the agony and the suffering behind afur coat. She thinks about the beauty andglamour of wearing one. I have the oppor-tunity to talk about that now, to be aspokesperson for the movement, andiopefully make people think about things aAttie bit.

"I don't even think most people knowabout the comestics business and about howthey test their products on animals in reallyhideous and barbaric ways. People just haveto try harder to be compassionate and lessviolent; it's hard to associate your mascarawith violence, but that's really where it camefrom. The basis of the cosmetics business isviolence."

Well, not only can Wiedlin discuss boththe fur and cosmetics industries at greatlengths, but also the meat industry and scien-tific research projects as well. Simply, killing(or maiming) an animal, for whatever reasonis senseless. Wiedlin draws no lines. She is anabolishionist and the music industry is pro-viding a soap box for her cause.

"It's really difficult to write about a sub-ject so violent in a pop song," she explains,"yet with Fur, I was able to treat itlightheartedly and it's something that isn't acultural thing so it was easier to turn it intosomething amusing, but I don't know howyou could ever talk about dissecting animalsand make it funny . . . there's just no way todo it. I talked about a man trying to buy awoman's affections with a fur coat."

Essentially, as Wiedlin admits, the sub -

GEORGE FOX - CountryGeorge Fox WEA 25.55551-PTalk about a hit "out of the box", the in-dustry will be talking about thisfavourite son of Cochrane, Alberta forquite some time. Meeting him per-sonally, he comes off very shy and kindof awkward, but put him in front of amike and he's as pure and exciting asthe great outdoors, but why spoil aperfectly good album with a lot of ver-biage, the story is in the grooves. They're not all hits, but they're all veryentertaining. Key are Angelina, the firstsingle taken from the set, already achart item, Heartwreak, LovesickBlues, and Long Distance. Songwritingpartner Jerry Martin is a major playerwith this discovery. Watch for topmanagement to take Fox the rest of theway Into the highly lucrative PA arena.Released on LP, Cassette and CD.

SPHERE CLOWN BAND Children& Creative Kids - SharingCreative - DC -002Very clever, this Sphere Clown Band. They have harnessed the burstingenergies of the Creative Kids, andwrapped very effective lyrical contentaround them, which spells FUN, andthat's what makes this release so im-portant. There's a huge market outthere for children's music, and this onestands out as a winner. There's atrusting and confidence about thevocal styling that will perk up the earsof youngsters from 12 months to 12years. Great stuff. Key are Teddy BearBand, Just For Laughs, SomebodyElse's Cat and Rub -a -dub -dub. Lyricsheet included. The band comprisesBumper (John Erlendson) Patty(Patricia Silver Erlendson) Banger (RickFaye) and Gizmo (Allan Baedak). John -Michael, the 31/2 year old son ofBumper and Patty makes his debut onthis beautifully illustrated cassette.

DAN SEALS - Pop/CountryRage On Capitol C1.46976 -FDan Seals has probably brought moreattention to the new traditional countrythan my other Nashville artist. Hisdays With England Dan and John FordColey would likely be credited to hisability to expand on his pop strengths.Addicted, the first single taken fromthis set, is breaking nationally inCanada, an excellent promotion vehi-cle for this album. Also key are a cou-ple of his originals, Factory Town andThose, and his co -writing with BobMcDill of Long Long Island Nights, andThey Rage On. Watch for the A/C pro-grammers to pick up on Seals. Releas-ed on LP, Cassette and CD.

FAVOURITE NATION - Pop/RockSelf -titled Autograph - ARPS-12002-NIf Jeremie Arrobas left Men WithoutHats to seek success elsewhere, hemay have to look farther than the debuteffort by his new band. The singlerelease, Sometimes A Silence, an en-joyable, Bryan Ferry sounding song, has attracted some attention, but un-fortunately, is not representative of thesound or quality of the rest of thealbum. No future single releases areplanned at this time.

GEORGIA SATELLITESOpen All NightWEA 96.07931-PGuitars and liquor, denim and leather, these are the things the GeorgiaSatellites are made of. With the excep-tion of the ballad, Hand To Mouth,Open all Night is straight out rock 'n'roll from beginning to end. While thealbum is climbing charts rapidly, thetitle -track, the first single, is taking offat a much slower rate. The sound, which is very similar to their debut ef-fort, is consistent throughout and theperformances are energetic. Of in-terest is a jumped-up rendition of theBeatles' Don't Pass Me By. However, the material is sorely lacking in varietyand all the songs begin sounding toomuch like each other.

GENTLEMEN WITHOUT PopWEAPONS TransmissionsA&M SP -5204-WThere is no need to search for hiddenmeanings on this album. Anunabashably political band,Gentlemen Without Weapons include,in their liner notes, informative articleson world concerns ranging from thegreenhouse effect and rain forests tonuclear waste and the cost of arms. Ifthe message seems reminiscent of thesixties, the music does not; layeredsynthesizer and percussion tracks arecombined with myriad "natural noises"(e.g. Tennis Ball, Boxing Glove) and"featured creatures" (e.g. budgie, humpback whale). The human voicesconsist primarily of polished singingvoices, but include spoken narration. The first single, Unconditional Lovealready enjoying some AOR airplay, issuitable for CHR programming. Otherimportant offerings are Eons Roll By,Transmissions and especially, Time. Attimes, even dancy, yet always in-novative, Transmissions is definitelyan experiment that succeeded.

THE BIBLE PopEurekaChrysalis CHS-41613-JWith an album title like Eureka, TheBible certainly has quite a bit to live upto. Luckily for the band, their debut, produced by Steve Earle, is a solid ef-fort destined to win them some friendsin Canada. Sounding like an organicABC, or a much happier Smiths. The Bi-ble shows many influences includingfolk, jazz, country and, of course, pop.The first single, Cyrstal Palace, standsout as a clear winner, as doesSkywriting.

TONI CHILDS PopUnion A&M - SP -5175-WSubtly incorporated African rhythmsand harmonies are highlighted byChilds' unique vocals on this DavidTickle produced album. Her themes arefolky and range from self -reflective in-trospection to racial strife. The boppyforthcoming single, Don't Walk Away, features the distinctive guitar of AlexWeir, known for his work with TalkingHeads. From the upbeat songs (StopYour Fussin, Zimbabwae) to the quieterpieces (Walk And Talk Like Angels, LetThe Rain Come Down), many of thetracks share a peculiar anthemic quali-ty which secures them a stronghold inthe mind's humming -centre. The truestrength of this effort is the successfulco -existence of variety in material andconsistency in sound, making Union acoherent whole greater than the sum ofits impressive parts. David Ricketts, ofDavid & David fame, is the associateproducer and shares writing credits onsix of the nine tracks.
