Conclusions STI571 is well tolerated and has significant antileukemicactivity in patients with CML in whom treatment with interferon alfa hadfailed. Our results provide evidence of the essential role of BCR-ABLtyrosine kinase activity in CML and demonstrate the potential for thedevelopment of anticancer drugs based on the specific molecularabnormality present in a human cancer.
