Apor Palace is one of the most representative buildings of medieval architecture in Alba Iulia. The palace, built in the second half of the eighteenth century, had for a long time a military destination. Here is now the University "1 Decembrie, 1918“. In the basement of the building it can be seen a permanent exhibition of Neolithic pottery.
The Batthyaneum Library, former church of the Trinitarian monks was built in 1719, Starting with 1792 the church was bought by the catholic bishop of Transylvania, Ignatiu Batthyani and it was turned into a library and an astrological observatory. Nowadays, the library has over 70000 manuscripts, documents and printings. The most important manuscript is the Codex aureus, a clerical book written with gold letters dating from the 9th century.
The Codex Aureus of Lorsch or Lorsch Gospels (Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, and Alba Iulia, Biblioteca Documenta Batthyaneum, s.n.) is an illuminated Gospel Book written between 778 and 820, roughly coinciding with the period of Charlemagne’s rule over the Frankish Empire.

In the 16th century the manuscript was taken to
Heidelberg (Otto Heinrich removed the contents of the
library to Heidelberg, creating the
famous Bibliotheca Palatina, just prior
to Lorsch’s dissolution in 1563), from
whence it was stolen in 1622
during the Thirty Years’ War; in
order to be easy to sell, the codex was broken in two and the covers torn off. Ivory cover of the Lorsch Gospels V&A Museum (detail)
