Dear Members, Sponsors, Contributors & Friends,
Alaska Public Media closed the year 2012 on a note of optimism and hope — because there is much to be excited about.
Our programming remains beloved in the communities we serve. Our finances are stable. Our staff is talented and dedicated. Our digital platforms extend our services and are achieving greater and greater impact. Our shared television service in partnership with KTOO-Juneau and KYUK-Bethel is growing and improving. KSKA FM-91.1 is the most listened-to radio station in Anchorage. The Alaska Public Radio Network — a partnership of 26 stations throughout Alaska — together serves some 96 percent of Alaskans. And we are hard at work on a marketing campaign to sally forth under our new, all-inclusive name, Alaska Public Media.
Through it all, we strive to sustain and strengthen our commitments to authenticity, excellence, connection and trust. In focus groups and phone calls and notes scrawled on pledge forms and just everyday conversations with members, these are the values Alaskans say we hold for them. We know that hewing to these commitments strengthens the bonds with our audiences, members, underwriters and volunteers.
Please test those things for yourself — not only with what you read in this report, but also in what you hear, view and read in our work every day. We believe this report outlines a strong and improving array of programs and services, but we know there is room for improvement. Your ideas on how we can accomplish that will fortify and inspire us for the challenges ahead. Thank you for the opportunity to serve Alaskans, and for the privilege of bringing public broadcasting — in all its many faces — to our communities. It is good and rewarding work.

Thank you Alfred HanischAlfred Hanisch 1923-2010
In 1946, Alfred Hanisch was one of the first to drive the Alaska Highway. After arriving in Anchorage, he built an 800 square foot log home in Spenard, where he lived for 60 years.
Alfred Hanisch was a civic-minded and deeply engaged citizen of Alaska. He was beloved by friends and co-workers and neighbors, and remembered as a kind and generous man who shoveled snow at his church, lent friends a hand on projects and gave away produce from his garden.
He died in 2010 at the age of 87. He continues to care for his community through generous bequests he left to Alaska Public Media and various other charities in Anchorage.
The Anchorage Assembly proclaimed January 31, 2012 “Alfred Hanisch Day” recognizing him as a public-spirited individual who left “a lasting gift for our community institutions that reflects a love for our city, the pursuit of a high quality of life for all citizens, and the transformative power that one individual can make with their gift.”
In recognition of his legacy gift, The Alfred Hanisch Legacy Society has been established to honor the generosity of Hanisch and other Alaskans who wish to include Alaska Public Media in their charitable and estate planning.
The Alfred Hanisch Legacy
Society recognizes visionary
Alaskans who have thoughtfully
provided for Alaska Public
Media’s long-term financial
stability by making a planned
gift. Legacy gifts are made
through a will or living trust,
charitable gift annuity,
charitable trust, retirement plan,
or other planned gift.

New Programming During the 2012 year, Alaska Public Media staff and volunteers took an outside-the-box approach when developing new programs. Arctic Entries and Mudrooms brought community-organized live storytelling events to KSKA listeners, and our new mobile television crew captured the music and arts scene with the Soundcheck and Object Runway mini docs.
The hosts of Kids These Days went on to create a mini-series on Mental Health and the Alaska Family, while KSKA’s Charles Wohlforth met notable Alaskans for intimate conversations at a coffee shop with 1on1.
More than anything, these new creative approaches to programming paved the way to new initiatives to empower our community with the public media platform. Conversations That Matter explored race and suicide issues with Alaskan leaders from around the state, and the first episodes of In My Family began production, setting the stage for teaching Alaska Native languages to our very young viewers.
New ServicesOn June 1, 2012, the KAKM television stream expanded to serve viewers in Southeast Alaska, Southwest Alaska, and cable subscribers throughout the state. This unprecedented shared service with KTOO and KYUK means that KAKM programming now reaches approximately 85 percent of Alaska’s households.
To better serve our much larger statewide audience, membership drives took to the road and began pitching for KAKM support from Seward to Palmer, from members’ living rooms to local businesses. And in an effort to expand our member services in Anchorage, we put on a series of life and retirement planning seminars together with UAA and Providence – often to standing room only crowds.

Alaska Public Media connects Alaskans to vital PBS kids programming
Each week, Alaska Public Media carries 71 hours of award-winning, commercial-free programming for pre-K to emergent readers and beyond. From Bethel to Ketchikan, every child in Alaska has the opportunity to learn, explore and discover with PBS programming. No other free broadcast TV media in Alaska offers this much educational programming for young learners. PBS Kids programming fills a vital need in this area.
Alaska Public Media connects Alaska’s teachers to vital PBS educational classroom enrichment services
Alaska Public Media serves as the gateway to an expansive resource and encouragement system for Alaska’s teachers through involvement with long-established and innovative new educational programs offered by PBS. One excellent example is the Colonial Williamsburg Electronic Field Trip and the multiple educational websites connected to its Teachers Initiative.
Alaska Public Media programming encourages Alaska’s youth to adopt positive social behaviors
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, watching appropriate programs can help children develop positive character traits such as curiosity, creativity, forgiveness, humility, optimism, perseverance, appreciation, fairness, generosity, dependability, gratitude, integrity, punctuality, self-control, sincerity and responsibility...all of which will help them succeed in their careers as well as their personal life.

Alaska Public Media gratefully acknowledges the more than 8,500 donors and 250 volunteers who make it possible for us to serve as a trusted media-based educational and cultural heritage institution that produces and presents outstanding services and programs for the people of Alaska and beyond. The numerous individuals and institutions that contribute to our company and programs help us keep Alaskans proudly connected to each other, aware of important issues and inspired to live a better, more informed life.
There are many ways to help Alaska Public Media fulfill its promise to Alaska:
Volunteer Through their work on fundraising drives, volunteers make it possible to raise millions of critical dollars every year. Volunteers are also involved in special events and special administrative support. Working individually or as part of a group, volunteers are Alaska Public Media’s personal connection to Alaskans. For more information, call Sonya Wellman 907.550.8432.
Membership More than 8,500 people from Southcentral Alaska and beyond actively support Alaska Public Media through their annual membership. Members help Alaska Public Media produce, acquire and present quality education-based programming. They also provide a stable source of revenue to support day-to-day operations as well as the development of future programs. For more information on becoming a member, call Kris Rognes 907.550.8435.
Program Sponsorship Program sponsorship on Alaska Public Media is a valuable investment that pays dividends in heightened awareness, image, loyalty and perception of quality.
