Sunounded by mystkal tradition and ceremony, his ptedetesots were national

champions feied with parades and theering fans. Today, Daisato's battles are

broadcast late at night t0 diminishing ratings. He has become the scapegoat ol

New Japan, whose citizens bitterly tomplain about the noise and destrutti0n 0f

him with sponsoradvertisements, an Alzheimer-afflkted grandfatherwho

transforms into a giant in dirty underwear and an ex-wife and daughter who are

embanased by his often cowardly exploits.

A wkkedly deadpan spin on the pop image of giant Japanese superheroes like

Ultraman, DAI NIPP0NJIN body slams with a stinging dry wit that ri(ochets to ever-

higher levels of audatity. Director and star Hitoshi Matsumoto - one of Japan's

biggest comedians, on the same level as Takeshi l(itano - pulls off a whacked-out

and imaginative filmmaking debut, yet still hits upon social issues like the lossof
