CHAPLAIN’S MESSAGE

One thing I have always mentioned is that we need the Nobility to be healthy! We have to try and keep the Black Camel list to a minimum.

While I do take my medications that were a result of my heart attack in 2010, I generally am very careful of the supplements that I consume. After my wife passed away last June, I noticed a shake occurring in my left arm. My greatest fear was that I was developing Parkinson’s disease (P.D.). I consulted with my doctor and it was decided that I should see a Neurologist in Calgary. It took several months and finally an appointment was made.

In the meantime, I started a supplement for my prostrate to keep it healthy. From mid-December until the end of February I noticed several changes occurring. I was experiencing some unusual bleeding and other unexplained symptoms. I read the label with the main ingredient being Saw palmetto. In doing my research I was appalled to read what this pill was doing to my body. I immediately stopped it and noticed changes for the positive occurring in a few weeks. The bottom line is to make sure that you know what you are ingesting and what the interactions can be with your existing drugs.

I went to the specialist and after an extensive examination it was determined I do not have P.D. He told me it is just a normal part of the aging process. Now this is the truth, I am to drink a glass of wine per day and if I am in a social situation I can have two glasses. It won’t stop the tremor but it will ease it a bit and of course make me feel better. Isn’t growing old lovely? I told my Pastor that if he sees me hanging around the communion wine longer than usual, it is only for medicinal purposes.

The other aspect of keeping healthy is to watch what you eat and exercise regularly. I go to the gym 5 times a week. Please help me keep the Black Camel list to a minimum by doing your part.

In the light of Grace, Noble R. Dean Cowan

Chaplain 2014

P.S. Don’t forget to get for the Shrine Golf Tournament in Las Vegas during October. I am!

RECORDER’S RAMBLINGS

Nobles & Ladies, as I write this, there is still snow on the ground, but our weather forecasters are telling us that spring is coming this weekend, so get your gardening tools out and start cleaning your golf clubs, winter is over!

You will note from the notice elsewhere in this issue that we have a spring ceremonial scheduled for May 3, only one month away. If you have candidates in mind, please get them to send along their applications. We look forward to receiving them here at the Shrine Centre.

Our Imperial Potentate, John Cinotto provided some current information on membership numbers at a recent Recorder’s seminar, which I missed, but thought you might like to know what he had said. “As we start the 2014 year, there are 283,625 shrine members worldwide. The Shrine has to turn membership around, the children will be losers if we do not. We need to work harder at getting mentors more active in helping at membership – men and the ladies.” “If we do not have Shriners how are we going to get the children to the hospitals? We need to show more of the true family fun, fellowship and brotherly love to attract more men and families.”

Nobles and ladies, let us all make every effort this year to have Al Azhar as one of the Shrine Centres that does help to “turn membership around.”

Many of us do some travelling during the year, whether in Canada or around the world. We have all run into problems at times while on these holidays, but I would like to share a couple of what some travelers considered problems and sent along to the large travel company, Thomas Cook. “We went on holiday to Spain and had a problem with the taxi drivers as they were all Spanish.” “It took us nine hours to fly home from Jamaica to England. It took the Americans only three hours to get home. This seems unfair.” One more which makes one wonder who these people are? “They should not allow topless sunbathing on the beach, it was very distracting for my husband who just wanted to relax.”

Nobles and ladies, be sure to get involved in your club and unit activities and let’s all have some fun In the Shrine this year!

Garth Border Your Recorder

MCLEAN CUP FOUND

The McLean Cup, which has been awarded to the winner of the East West Shrine Hockey Challenge, was lost during the Saddledome Flood in June 2013. A replacement Cup was made by Lady Lana Jones and it was presented to the Calgary Hitmen on February 7th in Vancouver. Two weeks later, the original McLean Cup was delivered to the Hitmen offices fully restored. Apparently, Saddledome staff were sorting through rubbish from the flood and this particular object looked important. They pulled it from the rubbish, cleaned it up and returned it to its rightful owner … the Calgary Hitmen. (I know it sounds too Masonic but it is true.) The Calgary Hitmen’s season ended on a sour note on March 29th but the Hitmen appreciated the Shriners support this season and are the “owners” of this McLean Cup having won it three years in a row.

SHC CANADA NEWS

THE ODYSSEY VEHICLE IS COMING TO SOUTHERN ALBERTA

The Shriners Hospitals for Children Canada has launched a very special public relations event that will go across Canada and the Northeastern United States to promote the Capital Campaign for the new hospital currently under construction.

The event involves taking the above pictured vehicle across Canada and the Northeastern United States with special public relations events in the cities and towns it visits.

The vehicle (which was provided through the generosity of Noble Cam Clark) will be taken by Al Azhar in Red Deer at a special public relations event on June 30 and brought to Calgary. It will participate in the Canmore and Banff Canada Day parades before being driven to Medicine Hat on July 2 where a special public relations event is being planned. From Medicine Hat, it travels to the Shriners International Annual Convention (aka Imperial) in Minneapolis where it will be featured in the Shrine Parade. It returns to Alberta in Lethbridge on July 10. It will be featured in the Street Wheelers on July 11 before heading back to Calgary on July 12 where it will participate in the Calgary Stampede Downtown Attractions before “joining in” a BBQ at the Al Azhar Centre.

This is great promotion for SHC Canada. The greatness of the promotion will depend on the number of fezzes at every event. All hands on deck! (We could also use volunteers to drive the vehicle while it is in Southern Alberta.) The “Odyssey Coordinator” for Al Azhar is Assistant Rabban Byron Nelson.

MEGA BRAND SHRINERS TOYS

MEGA BLOCKS ARE COMING

Mega Brands (makers of Mega Blocks) is providing toy cars to Shriners International free of charge as a fund-raising opportunity for SHC Canada and Al Azhar. These toy cars are a great gift for sons or daughters or grandkids and will be available at the Shrine Centre in April. They cost $5 … $2.50 goes to SHC Canada and $2.50 goes to Al Azhar. Let’s sell them out!

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE:

The first quarter of 2014 has been extremely productive on the construction site for the new Shriners Hospitals for Children-Canada. While extreme cold weather slowed down the concrete pours in December and January, the team began the mechanical, electrical and plumbing work inside the structure in the two basement levels and the ground floor which were heated. The concrete structure of the building was completed on February 28th, including the ``penthouse`` which is a utilities room of the roof of the sixth floor. As the structure rose and the concrete cured, formwork from the lower levels was removed; workers began enclosing the lower level floors as well as installing the window frames. Mid-March, the concrete structure for the tunnel linking our hospital entrance within the McGill University Health Centre patient and family parking to our hospital was also poured. As soon as the ground thaws, the entire perimeter of the hospital will be backfilled. April 8, 2014 marks the one year anniversary of the beginning of construction. At that time 30% of the construction project will be completed. We continue to be on budget and cold, ice and snow considered, on time. We have begun planning for an August 2015 dedication and patient move in the fall of 2015.

HOSPITAL REPORT 2013

This past year our patient count has slightly increased. As of this date, we have a total of 59 active patients in our system. A patient is considered active if they have attended one of our hospitals within the last two years.

Patient designations are: 37 going to Spokane 15 going to Montreal 2 going to Boston 3 going to Portland 1 going to St. Louis 1 going to Salt Lake City

These patients go to the hospital 1 to 4 times in a one year period, depending on their condition.

Most trips to Spokane are on our care coach. If it is not available, we usually drive the patient and parent to Spokane in a rented van. All other patients are flown to the other hospitals. We are very fortunate that last year West Jet provided Al Azhar with flight passes for our patients to destinations that are direct out of Calgary. They have done the same this year. I would encourage everyone to utilize West Jet for their personal travel, in thanking them for the financial support they have given us for our patient travel.

Our new patients are referred to me by Shriners and their wives, through family, friends and business associates. Some are referred to by Doctors, Teachers and Health associations.

If you think you know of a child that needs our help or are approached by someone, contact me first and let me know what the problem is, before telling them we can help. I have received many calls from people looking for financial assistance and for diseases and conditions that we do not treat. When you phone me, I will assess the request and tell you if it falls under the mandate of our care. If it does, we will proceed with an application to submit to a hospital. This eliminates any embarrassment on your part or the Shriners.

Please continue to help us in this great philanthropy.

Dave Dyson, P.P. Hospital Chairman

We thank our SHC partners. Please support them

THINGS OUR SOCIETIES SHOULD KNOW

For Clubs/Units that have Societies, here are a few things you should know.

1. All communications with AGLC MUST BE through the Shrine Office unless direct communication is approved by

the Government Liaison Officer (Ill Sir Gordon Berard), the Potentate or our Admin Assistant (Pat Ferguson)

2. Society Meeting should be separate from “fraternal” Club/Unit Meeting. Get your Club/Unit Meeting done and

adjourned and then open a Society Meeting

3. The elected Divan are also Directors of all Al Azhar Societies. The Divan must be advised, with due notice, of any

Society Meeting through your Divan Rep.

4. No decision of any Society is “valid” until ratified by the Divan since they have a majority vote. Direct Society

minutes to your Divan Rep or the Recorder so the decisions can be reviewed by the Divan at their scheduled

Meetings. If there is an urgency, notify the Potentate or Recorder and an emergency Divan Meeting can be

arranged.

We are not “laying down these rules” to oppress any Society. We are “laying down these rules” to protect our Societies status. Brian Shimmons,

Potentate

THE PATROL Greetings to all from the Shrine Patrol. As parade

season draws near we are preparing for the looking

forward to another busy year. We will be

participating in seven parades this year including the

Stampede parade.

We held a very successful Unit Appreciation Wine

& Cheese party and we were very pleased to

welcome our Potentate, Illustrious Sir Brian

Shimmons and Lady Victoria as our guests. It was a

great evening with some very hard work done by

Noble Wayne Capper which included a very nice

selection of wines. A special thank you to Past

Potentate Dave Dyson and Lady Lynn for their

preparation and providing the excellent cheeses and

crackers. Captain Andy and Lady Verna provided

the fruit trays and I am sure that everyone in

attendance had a great time and were very

appreciative of the time and effort that went into

making it such a successful event.

At the time of this issue of the Fez Sez our 300 Club

will have taken place and for those who attended we

would like to express our sincere thanks for your

support of this annual fundraiser for the Patrol

Our two newest members Noble Wayne Capper

and Noble Bill Wright have become quite

proficient on the Segways and we are sure they are

looking forward to joining us for the parade season

and other events.

If you are curious about riding one of the Segways

or would like to consider joining the Shrine Patrol

please feel free to contact any member of the unit

or join us for one of our regular meetings. The

Shrine Patrol Club Runner Site is up and running

with all of the current information as to practices,

parades, photos and events.

MOUNTED PATROL The Al Azhar Mounted Patrol held its Annual Installation and Dinner on November 23, 2013 at the Shrine Center. A delicious meal was served and thoroughly enjoyed by all in attendance. The following Nobles were installed for the ensuing year: President Noble Jim Cascadden Captain Noble Richard Sigurdson 1st Lieutenant Noble Glen Hacke 2nd Lieutenant Noble Robert Graham Secretary Noble Gary Van Exan Treasurer Noble Jim Hendry Directors: Noble Mark Lawson Noble Jeff Diegel On December 11, 2013 the Unit held their annual Christmas Wine and Cheese function. This event was hosted by Noble President Jim Cascadden and Lady Margaret. A very enjoyable evening was had by all. In early December our Wrangler, Pat Shepherd, was kicked by a horse and injured her upper leg. Pat was unable to care for the horses for a few weeks and the Mounted Patrol ride members had to look after the horses during that time. The weather was quite severe at the time so the horses had to be brought in from their pens in the late afternoon and put back out again in the morning. But the Members rallied together and got the job done. Thanks to everyone who helped while Pat was recuperating. Fortunately, she has recovered and is back in the saddle. Conditioning exercises began during the first week of January. The horses seem to enjoy getting out of the barn and getting some exercise in the Fez Dome. Regular ride practices will begin in early April, followed by our delicious dinners prepared and served by our dedicated ladies. The AMP held another successful “Jigg’s Dinner” on March 15, 2014. The event was well attended and everyone seemed to have a great time. Our Chief Cook, Noble Lloyd Lawson, excelled again with cooking the corned beef. Thanks Lloyd for a great dinner. The Fez Dome was decked out in St. Patrick’s Day decorations, and many attendees were wearing something green which added to the fun of the evening. The Unit is planning on attending the International Shrine Horse Patrol convention in Minneapolis, Minnesota, July 5-10, 2014. Everyone is looking forward to an enjoyable time in Minneapolis, renewing old friendships and making new ones. As a fund raiser the Mounted Patrol are selling raffle tickets on a Custom Built 16-1/2 inch Saddle. This saddle is the “Last Rollins Saddle Ever Produced”. Breast Strap and Headstall are included. The tickets are $20.00 each and can be obtained from any member of the Mounted Patrol. The draw date is June 15, 2014. The AMP was saddened by learn of the death of Lady Margaret Knight on January 10th, 2014 at the age of 88. Lady Margaret was the widow of long-time AMP ride member Jack Knight who died while fun Cattle Penning in the Fez Dome on February 28, 1992. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Knight family during this difficult time. We are all wishing for a Happy Spring with NO MORE SNOW!!!! Noble Roy Jardine

AIR CORPS NEWS Spring is trying to come but old man winter just will not let go. Parade season will be here shortly with all the units in attendance as well as the planes. We will have a full line up as usual and we are hoping to take our newly decaled trailer to Boise in August for PNSA. The Air Corps main thrust for the summer will be a membership opportunity for the shrine. We are organizing a BEEF and Pig roast for Sunday July 27th at 1pm at the shrine center. The theme will be a summer festival with the hopes of ALL UNITS participating. We would like to see you bring Masons who are not Shriners to show them our shrine center and the fun we have being Shriners. You may bring friends, family acquaintances young and old. Weather permitting we can have all units displaying their unit hardware (cars, planes, horses, clowns, segways, bands etc.) We need new members and this will be a great opportunity for us to show any new prospects what we do. I will need your help in putting this event together so all unit heads please call me (Ron Down 403-283-1714) to discuss what you can do to help make this event a success. Tickets may be purchase from Cinde or Pat at the shrine center or any air corp member $20 adults, children 12 and under free. Fraternally Ron Down Captain

TIN LIZZIE CORPS

Happy Spring Nobles! The Tin Lizzies are gearing up for a fun and action packed summer! We meet on the third Tuesday of the month. All members of Al Azhar are encouraged to visit our regular meetings. We have many events planned for the year both as fundraisers and to help with community awareness of what the Shriners are all about. We will have many move outs for parades and community events and we look forward to seeing you out promoting our great philanthropy! If you know of any events that would enjoy our little cars tooling around please don’t hesitate to contact us! Just in time for summer, it’s our annual ‘Tin Lizzies Meat Sale!’ We have excellent product with competitive pricing to help feed you and your family. We will have the order forms out shortly and a confirmed date from our supplier, Centennial Foods. This is the preferred meat the Tin Lizzies use for our various BBQ’s, including Circus! Thank you for your support and happy cooking! I would like to congratulate Noble Lloyd Norman for his many years of service to the Tin Lizzies as our secretary and the Corps honored him by naming him ‘Secretary Emeritus’! Also congratulations to Noble Carl Hackman and Noble Gordon Bratke who were recognized for their years of service with life membership status! I look forward to seeing you at the festivals, parades and functions this summer! Rick Delaney Commander 2014
