FEZ SEZ JANUARY 2011

Dear Nobles and Ladies, We sincerely hope everyone has had a very Merry Christmas and a great Festive Season. Our Divan was very busy over the last couple months with Club and Unit Installations, and would like to wish the new Officers all the very best for 2011 and congratulations to all the outgoing Officers for a job well done. This is the concluding message on behalf of the Divan of 2010 and it has been very enjoyable and quite an experience for Lady Marlene and I. We have also had some trying times, but with the Divan we have, we were able to overcome. I cannot say enough about the Divan members I have had the privilege to work with; we had good communication and worked together as a TEAM and as the old saying goes, “There is no ‘I’ in Team”. We must acknowledge and thank our fantastic team of Assistants, and all the volunteers, whose organizational skills made the Potentates evening and Ceremonials run smoothly and the entertaining Ritualistic cast for their first class performance at the Ceremonials. Finally, a big thank you to our Recorder, Noble Garth Border, and our Administration Staff, Pat Fergusson and Cinde Shemanski, who have kept us organized and on track. It has been an honor and a very humbling experience to serve as Potentate of Al Azhar; we have met so many new friends and know we will cherish these friendships forever. Again, Lady Marlene and I thank you for the opportunity, support and friendship in our most exciting year in the Shrine. Best wishes to all for a Healthy and Prosperous New Year! Yours in the faith, Eldon Wells Potentate 2010

RECORDER’S RAMBLINGS Happy New Year to all the Nobles and Ladies of Al Azhar!! We look forward to the upcoming Annual General Meeting and Potentate’s Ball on January 22nd at the Carriage House Inn. Remember that you will need your 2011 dues card to attend the meeting which starts at 9:00 A.M. Also don’t forget the annual Camel Herder’s Breakfast earlier that morning. Chief Keeper of the Pile, Noble Howard Langdon always puts on a great breakfast and event for us. Nobles and Ladies, it is that time of year when we often resolve to do something to improve ourselves, our family or our fraternity. I would like to suggest to all that we take a close look at what is planned for Al Azhar in general, and your clubs and units in particular and pencil in some of those dates now. This will ensure you will have planned for some events in support of our Fraternity for 2011. We do need all of you to participate in order for Al Azhar to remain a vibrant and fun group to which we all are proud to belong. A reminder to all the clubs and units that we need your year-end financial information sent in to us ASAP so we can get it put together for the auditor to complete our annual financial statements. Thank you to all the Nobles and Ladies who have helped us here at the Shrine Centre over the past year with various tasks including sending out newsletters such as this one. It does indeed make our jobs easier and also provides a great opportunity for us to interact with you and hear about your activities and concerns. I hope to see many of you at the A.G.M. and the Potentate’s Ball. Finally, another 2011 resolution came to mind when someone said to me recently that I should attend my lodge more often because, how can you be a brother to someone you don’t even know?

Let us all try and attend our lodge this year, we know there are new brothers there who would make great Shriners too.

GREETINGS FROM THE CHAPLAIN As this is being written the New Year has turned over! Where did 2010 go? I trust that you will have a healthy, happy and prosperous 2011! I have not seen the agenda yet but there will be a Ceremonial in the plans. NOW is the time to start getting a Candidate for the Ceremonial. If you do have a potential Candidate that is sitting on the fence, why not invite him out to a unit meeting to see what he thinks? Another idea would be to show him the Website and the Fez Sez. Print off a copy and give it to him. There are a lot of activities in each issue and this may also spark his interest. In Red Deer, we have just finished our first full year of having the Ladies out to our monthly meetings. To say that it has been a success is an understatement. When we had our recent Christmas party the room was absolutely packed. Every single chair was occupied. In my ten years as a member I have never seen so much excitement at a meeting. The Ladies have given us a huge shot in the arm. Some new Nobles and their Ladies have even joined us as well. 2011 will be an awesome year. After my recent heart attack I realize that I have been given a second shot at life and in my soul I know that I am going to have a great year. Every day above ground is a great day! I would rather be picking daisies than pushing them! In the Light of Grace, Noble R. Dean Cowan Chaplain 2010

SAKKARA TEMPLE NO. 115 DAUGHTERS OF THE NILE PATROL Sakkara Temple No. 115 Patrol held their Christmas turkey dinner party in the Fireside Lounge at Al Azhar Shrine Centre. A warm welcome was extended to our very special guest, our Queen Wendy Newton. It was with surprise and pleasure a show of early fashions and uniforms was organized and presented by Pr. Marnie McCulloch. The Patrol was constituted in 1956 and in 1958 they travelled by train to attend the first Canadian Supreme Session held in Vancouver, B.C. The fashions were first shown in 1986 at Irene Rusk’s retirement party held at the University of Calgary. She was Captain of the Patrol for 30 years. Our models this year are Pr. Inez Jardine who wore all the short dresses, Pr. Kay Marles who showed the long gowns and Vivian Tuckey, PQ modeled the uniforms. Pr. Gladys Metz worked behind the scenes, as she did in 1986 to help the models dress. The following pictures show some of the fashions and uniforms.

Job’s Daughters Celebrates 60 years in Alberta.

On October 16, 2010 Job’s Daughters of Alberta celebrated our 60th birthday, marking a passing era or a new stage in our Order. As Grand Bethel Honored Queen, I had the privilege of presiding over the meeting. Our celebrating began with an open meeting and a ceremony called A Tribute to Job’s Daughters. The officers for the ceremony were made up of daughters from all of the Bethel’s in Alberta. Each Bethel presented the history on their bethel during the meeting and afterwards there were a lot of Jobie history to look at. The 60th Birthday was a great success. New friendships were made, old friends we reunited, and we all got to share in the past, present and future of Job’s Daughters in Alberta. It’s a common quote in Alberta, “You get more out of Job’s Daughters than what you put into it”. Our daughters live by this line. We work hard in all of our efforts to build a stronger Alberta. Our experiences give us knowledge, and support from the Masonic Family gives us strength. Every girl deserves to participate in an environment as caring and encouraging as Alberta Job’s Daughters is. With your support Alberta Job’s Daughters can live another 60 years and support thousands of daughters that will become the leaders of tomorrow.

Hi everyone, well the Christmas season has come and gone and now we start the New Year. That means we only have two and half months till this year’s circus. This will be a whole new ball game this year but the Management Committee and the Circus Committee have been hard at work to try and make this year’s circus a success. The Management Committee is working on all the financial and advertising matters and we will need some help in January to man phones and try to sell some advertising for the program. We have some dedicated lines at the Centre for this purpose and I will be calling on anyone who has some time to come out and work the phones. This will be cold calling but to only the advertisers in last year’s program, to see if they want to renew. Also if you own a business or work for someone who may be interested please contact me and we follow this up. Remember this is our big move-out to run our facility so please help where you can. The actual volunteers for the circus are coming along fine, and here is what we have got so far; OPERATIONS CHAIRPERSONS VOLUNTEERS Volunteer registry - Gord and Carol Brewer - need 4 persons per show Programs and Ticket Taking - Dick Buchanan- Wild Rose shrine Club Circus Rides - Past potentates - 6 per show 50/50 - Ingrid Saunders - the Patrol Novelties and Balloons – Bob Baker - Tin Lizzies Handicap Seating and Strollers - New Shriners Food and Novelty Sales in Stands - open so far - need 10 volunteers (preferably Younger, lots of stairs) We will have openings throughout the 5 shows so if you can help please feel free to give us a call at 403-547-5538 and leave a message, we will get back to you as soon as possible So for this year 2011, we need help to get the bums in the seats. So please do all the verbal advertising you can, to assist us in this year’s endeavor. The management Committee will be calling on the units later, to do some move-outs to advertise this year’s circus in some of the Malls, and we will be contacting the units when we have this plan in hand. Working for success, Garry Saunders, Circus Chairman

Al Azhar Shriners Vintage Car Club

Here we are at yet another year end, and a fine one it was. We held our last meeting of the year at the Dynasty Chinese Restaurant way up north in the Crowfoot Shopping Center. I say that because we live way down on the south end. The roads that night were frightful, but the company of members was delightful (A little Christmas humour there). It was nice to see so many members in attendance for this is our election night of the incoming executive for 2011. We want to thank all who helped out this past year with various tasks to make each meeting delightful and edible. Lady Elsje Thorpe took the bull by the horns, coming up with different meals at each meeting and all the ladies who contributed with their cooking talents. That’s the secret for all members in other units to attend your meetings...FOOD. Another Lady is Arlene Aylesworth. She is a handy kind of gal who offered to maintain the membership roster on the computer for us by updating it from time to time and it looks like she will be adding more members to the roster as interest grows in members joining the car club which now stands at thirty five. Our outgoing president Noble Russ Phillips managed to get through the year with just a phone, but did return every call as soon as he could, once his two tin cans and roll of string were hooked up. “Now that’s as close to a computer as I will ever get” said Russ. The Boyce’s, Eccles, and our nervous photographer Noble Eric Skagen are second to none in their outstanding commitment to the unit. And every unit should have their own photographer that does not like heights..... “Right Eric”? And let’s not forget the car show which has become an annual success since we started five years ago at the Shrine Centre Mounted Patrol field. Hopefully we will continue to enjoy good weather each year and we are looking forward to the New Year seeing more events put on by the car club unit. We shall keep you posted. The Christmas party has become a sellout event, but we will have to move onto a larger venue to

accommodate more people that would like to attend. With a silent auction, and some outstanding items to bid on, which is held at the same time, we generate funds for the children’s transportation fund and also have fun doing so which is our main goal. Lady Carol Boyce sets up the auction and continues to do a wonderful job. At the dinner this year, we raised $1,565.00 from the auction items donated by our members. For the first time in as many years, Santa paid us a visit to the surprise of many people and showed that he still exists. Ho Ho Ho! I know for a fact that when he entered the room, the smiles that greeted him were ones of excitement, and it brought back that little kid in all of us as he handed out not toys but roses to all the ladies. A special thank you goes out to his elf friend at Panda Flowers who donated the flowers. By the way Santa’s first name is not Frank, its Santa when he is visiting. Ho Ho Ho ! (again) Our Chief Rabban Noble John Thorpe had his plate full as our Treasurer this past year and he was still at it collecting dues, dinner ticket money, and silent auction funds. But he was not finished with that, he was then taking on the task of swearing in the new members who will take office in 2011. As we are all aware, he will move on to his new position as Potentate of Al Azhar Shriners and will be a fine one at that. Again we thank him for all he has done for our unit. Our newly elected members for 2011 are as follows: President Noble Bill Sheppard Vic President Noble Franklin Silliker Treasurer Noble Eric Skagen Secretary Noble Sean Gough I have enjoyed writing articles for the Fez Sez keeping all nobles informed on the activities of the AAVCC, but shall let the new Secretary carry on where l leave off. As we still enjoy the activities we create as Shriners, it is very rewarding to know that we do this all for one great purpose, the children. Hope you had a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year Proud to be a Shriner Scribe – Motorous, Noble Frank Silliker

AL AZHAR MOUNTED PATROL The Al Azhar Mounted Patrol (AMP) held their Installation and Dinner at the Shrine Center on November 5th, 2010. It was nice to see Nobles and their Ladies from other Units attend, as well as members of the Divan. The following Nobles have been installed in the Mounted Patrol for the ensuing year: President Noble Gary Van Exan Captain Noble Larry Handy 1st Lieutenant Noble James Norrie 2nd Lieutenant Noble Len Van As Secretary Noble David Hanna Treasurer Noble Warren Nelson, PP Directors: Noble Mark Lawson Noble Douglas Bradley The AMP were saddened to learn of the death of long-time ride member, Alexander Roy Munro on October 3, 2010 at the age of 83. Roy joined the Mounted Patrol in 1963 and rode in the musical ride for over 30 years. He was the Drill Master for several years prior to his retiring and becoming an Associate Member. Although he retired from riding he was a faithful member of the Unit and would attend many functions and get togethers at the club house, until his passing. Roy was a dedicated Mason, joining the lodge in 1957. He joined the Scottish Rite in 1959 and was coroneted a 33 Degree Scottish Rite Mason September 1994. Noble Brother Roy you will be missed by all those whose paths you crossed. Although Roy requested no funeral services to be held, a “celebration of Roy’s life” was held at the AMP Club House on October 27, 2010, with many riders past and present in attendance. The AMP held it’s annual Wine and Cheese Christmas Party at the Club House on December 15, 2010 and had a very festive evening. On behalf of the Executive and Members of the Mounted Patrol we hope all Nobles and their Ladies had a Merry Christmas filled with joy and good fellowship, and wish you a very healthy and happy 2011. Fraternally, Roy Jardine

Royal Canadian Legion Honours Andy Bogle By Bruce Hogle A well-known Al Azhar Shriner, Andy Bogle, has once again been honoured by the Royal Canadian Legion. In 2003, Andy received the Legion’s highest award – the Meritorious Service Medal – given by Dominion Command for Andy’s continuous meritorious service to the Legion, outstanding service to his community, and a willingness to assist whenever called upon. Andy, a World War 11 veteran, has been a Legion member, first joining at Brandon in 1957 when he immediately became involved in the Winnipeg Legion Poppy Campaign for five years. He moved to Calgary in 1962, transferring to the Calgary North Branch where he has been active ever since. A second honour was bestowed on Andy this year with the awarding by Legion national President Doug Cox of the Palm Leaf to the Meritorious Service Medal. It is only given to these members of the Legion who have continuously contributed to the welfare of the Legion and its members for at least five consecutive years. Besides being President of the Calgary North Branch, Andy has also been their Sergeant At Arms, as well as serving on the Poppy committee, sick and visiting, honour guard and colour guard. As Morris Esber put it, “if there was an office or task that had to be done – Andy filled it.” Morris wasn’t just speaking about the Legion, as Andy is also the current President of the Calgary Naval Veterans Association. In addition, he has also worked with West Jet Airlines in raising food for needy families in the Calgary area. In acknowledgement of Andy’s service to the Legion and community, federal Environment Minister Jim Prentice said receiving this honour was a clear reflection of “your outstanding service to our nation and dedication to the Legion.” Prentice added: “Your many years of service and assistance to our nation’s veterans has made you a wonderful role model and example. I know that your ongoing leadership will inspire others to continue the Legion’s standard of excellence and generosity within the community.” Andy Bogle’s service in the last world war was with the Royal Canadian Navy from 1943 to 1945. Upon leaving the navy, he worked in the oilfield and dairy industries, and then the CPR for almost 30 years where he headed up their investigation department. Within the craft, Andy has been as member of St. Mark’s Masonic Lodge #188 for 36 years, being Master in 1982. He joined Al Azhar in 1979. Potentate Eldon Wells added his compliments to Andy, stating the Al Azhar Divan and Al Azhar Shriners felt very proud of the service that fellow member Andy had rendered to his country, knowing that some 100,000 Canadians paid the supreme sacrifice and another 200,000 were wounded during two world wars, various conflicts and peacekeeping missions.

Ted/Doreen Flemmer Honoured at Ceremonial

By Bruce Hogle The festive season has come and gone and we’ve all made individual New Year’s promises with the best intentions of seeing them fulfilled. The one major 2011 wish for Imperial Potentate George Mitchell of Toronto is to stop the losses of Shrine membership. That’s also the goal and objective of 2011 Al Azhar Potentate John Thorpe and his Divan, as it was with 2010 Al Azhar Potentate Eldon Wells and his Divan. “I know the Imperial Sir echoes the views of all Shriners”, said 2010 Potentate Eldon Wells, “that we cannot allow the Black Camel to continue decimating the ranks of our members which now number 340,000 based on 2009 statistics. . . with 2010 figures not as yet known. “Thus it is up to all of us – various Divans, Clubs, Units, Committees and members at large of not only Al Azhar - but all Temples - to diligently collectively work together to change this picture. “Al Azhar had an excellent 2010 with 18 new Nobles fezzed at the Spring Ceremonial, plus six at the Fall Ceremonial and another five via the cold sands induction. Add in the five affiliations we had and that totals 33 new Shriners for Al Azhar last year. I will work closely with incoming Potentate John Thorpe and his team to aim for at least that number – if not more. But no one person can do this alone. We must collectively work together with the addition of new young members to continue our incredible work with one of the greatest philanthropies within the world – the 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children.” Potentate Eldon said he was pleased with the Fall Ceremonial turn out in his hometown which honoured long time Medicine Hat Shriner and distinguished businessman and community activist Noble Ted Flemmer and his Lady Doreen. Noble Bob Porter introduced Noble Ted and Lady Doreen. On the personal side, the Flemmers have been married 58 years and have two sons and daughters in law – Alan and Cathy of Calgary, Robert and Kelly of Medicine Hat. Their third son, Kevin is deceased. The Flemmers also have eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Craftwise, Noble Ted joined Mizpah Masonic Lodge in 1989 and Al Azhar Shriners in 1992 – when he also joined the Medicine Hat Shrine Club. He is a past member of the Al Azhar Membership Committee. Noble Ted has served as Medicine Hat Shrine Club President and recently received his Lifetime Membership for his dedication over the years as club Secretary and Treasurer, Circus Chairman, Newsletter Publisher, Hospital Chairman and Club Historian. He was also President of the former Mounted Patrol, a life member of the Clowns and currently Commander of the Legion of Honour. Ted Flemmer’s work within the Medicine Hat community is equally as distinguished. He was named an Honourary Director of the Medicine Hat Exhibition and Stampede because of the variety of positions he held with that organization over the years, including Vice President, Parade Marshal and Director of Advertising and Marketing. He also founded the Heart and Stroke Fund charity golf tournament, has been Chairman for the last 17 years, and so far has raised close to $350,000 for research. He was also heavily involved with the Senior Citizens Light Cavalcade for 26 years, organizing tours for upwards of 800 Medicine Hat seniors to see Christmas lights throughout the city, followed by entertaining and feeding a very happy group.

It is because of such commitments that Ted Flemmer was proclaimed Medicine Hat’s Citizen of The Year in 1994 – an honour he treasures to this day. Heavily involved in the automotive industry for almost five decades, Noble Ted was a director of the Alberta Auto Dealer’s Association and the Auto Body Association. He was also President for many years of the Medicine Hat Auto Dealers Association and organized their annual golf tournament for 26 years. Within the ranks of General Motors, he was the 500th graduate of GM’s Automotive Management seminars at Simon Fraser University Bob Porter commended the assistance that Lady Doreen provided over the years, telling the Fall Ceremonial: “Her strength was always there for Ted during those times when things got a little hectic, and we thank her for that.” Potentate Eldon Wells ended the Fall Ceremonial banquet with presentation of a plaque to the Flemmers which read: “This Plaque is presented to Noble Ted Flemmer and Lady Doreen Flemmer in appreciation of their hard work and dedication to the Al Azhar Shriners of Southern Alberta and the Shriners of North America.” Later, the Potentate added: “Both of these people are role models for the Shrine and their Community by always making themselves available for whatever the cause. They have given unstintingly of themselves and we are the richer for it. It truly has been our pleasure to dedicate this Al Azhar Fall Ceremonial in their honour.”

Oriental Band Happenings

Members of the band attended the fall ceremonial in Medicine Hat on Nov. 13th. Those in attendance had a great time, taking part in all the activities and performing at the ceremonial first section. Music director Noble Art Laing thought we were beyond good, even approaching passable with our own brand of the sweetest music this side of heaven, and adding an especial dimension to the proceedings. While at the ceremonial, members of the band became (as usual) the make-up artists for the members of the cast. It was very interesting accomplishing this task in our oh-so-spacious facility, but there were no complaints as morning refreshment (of course, timmies coffee) was available to all. On Nov. 20th, members of the band joined other units of the temple to have their new executives installed by the divan. A very pleasant evening was had by everyone, made possible by the fact that, although it was cold, there was no repeat of last years’ storm. The executive of the band took this opportunity to honor one of our own, Noble Guy Cochrane, an award for outstanding service to the band over the years. Guy has been responsible for maintaining the truck and trailer and making sure it was always available for the parades. Further, he never forgot to supply water at the parades for the Shriners that were participating Thank you for everything Guy see you all at Noble John Thorpe’s coronation.
