  • THE destiny of both the Jebel Ali Jockeys andTrainers Championshipswere decided long before lastweeks final meeting of the seasonat the track, won by Musabah AlMuhairi and Wayne Smith respec-tively, but there was plenty to playfor in the Owners equivalentwhich reached a thrilling climax.

Going into the meeting, HHSheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al

Maktoums eight winners saw himone clear of Fathi Esaed MohdEgziama, himself one ahead ofSheikh Mansoor bin Mohd AlMaktoum. It was the last namedwho drew first blood with the victory of On War in an 1800mhandicap but Egziama soon repliedwith Russian Rock landing the featured 1000m dash.

That was his only runner on thecard though and Sheikh Mansoor

immediately joined the other pairon eight winners when IguazaFalls won the following 1600m handicap. And that washow it finished, all three locked oneight with Sheikh Hamdan takingthe spoils having owned morehorses who finished second thanthe other pair.

All three titles were generouslysponsored by Ardmore Trading. However, those cash prizes were

not all that was at stake and Egziama gained ample compensation when presented withthe keys to a Chevrolet Tahoe, donated by Sheikh Majid binMohammed Al Maktoum, as theowner of Russian Rock, the most successful horse on thecourse this season.

He won four times, as did fellowbig race winner and stable companion Treble Jig but again it

was a second place that clinchedthe award with Treble Jig winningall four of his starts, whereasRussian Rock did suffer defeat up the hill.

For good measure, Al Muhairiand Smith were similarly awardedhaving saddled and ridden themost winners on the course including a combined eight timeswith the aforementioned RussianRock and Treble Jig.

BARRING a miracle, the UAE OwnersChampionship will surelyagain go to HH Sheikh Hamdanbin Rashid Al Maktoum whose 36winners thus far this season is atleast seven more than anyone else, although Godolphin are on 29 andset to have runners in seven racesthis evening.

Tadhg OShea may have drawna blank at Jebel Ali last Fridayafternoon but with his closest pursuer in the UAE jockeys race,Richard Mullen, riding only onewinner and Wayne Smith alsomanaging a single success, it wasenough for OShea to defend hislocal jockeys crown.

It is the third time the jockey haswon the title, whereas it looks likethere will be a new name on the trainers title with ErnstOertel in pole position on 34 winners, one more than MusabahAl Muhairi who only has oneWorld Cup night runner.

Ali Rashid Al Raihe, the reigning champion and formerchampion Satish Seemar are both on 31.

WINNER of the 2012 Japan Cup, Gentildonna, recorded 55.5 seconds in a four furlong gallop at Ritto Training Centre last Wednesday, her final piece of work before she headed for Dubai on Friday.

She is set to run in the Dubai SheemaClassic tonight.

Trainer Sei Ishizaka said: "I sent her for a break soon after last year's Japan Cup. After she returned, I thought she was well refreshed due to hershape and calm mind, so I have

trained her with the Dubai Sheema Classicas her target.

"The biggest concern is the transportation. I hope it is good for her. Ithink if she arrives at Dubai with no trouble then she will still be fine, same asnow, and will show us a successful run."

"Ryan rode him when he was third last year so webooked him," explained Botti.

Botti is confident he has his charge in better shapeand continued: "Ryan knows the horse well, he's ingood shape and I think he has benefited from hispreparation this year as he's had a run. He wentthere fresh last year and I think having the run willhelp him.

"We know he handles the track and if he gets a bitof luck with the draw he could have a very goodchance. He did his final piece of work on Friday, which was very good, and he left this morning, soit's very exciting."

  • THERE is no Frankel to savour thisFlat season but there will be nolack of top quality runners carryingthe pink, green and white livery of ownerPrince Khalid Abdullah, and Model Pupil was the first to do so as he romped to victory in the DoncasterShield, the 1m4f first day feature of thenew UK Flat season.

Trained by Charlie Hills, Model Pupilhad the best form in the field and chargedto a clear victory under Ryan Moore.Model Pupil tracked leader Masterful Actinto the straight, Moore shielding hismount from the fierce wind billowingacross Town Moor.

Model Pupil and November Handicapwinner Art Scholar, who showed noresentment at being flung back into the

foul British weather having wintered herein Dubai, travelled smoothly as The BullHayes hit the front with half a mile to run.

The Bull Hayes kept on gamely in front but he was a sitting duck for themarket leader who hit the front with twofurlongs to run and went effortlessly clearto claim victory.

Model Pupil was beaten a nose byMickdaam in last year's Group 3 ChesterVase and Moore said: "He was entitled towin but that was a good start. He travelled okay, it's hard on that ground asthey were going in up to their shins."

The following day's card was postponed one week and the first big race of the season, the LincolnHandicap, now clashes with the DubaiWorld Cup meeting

ROYAL ASCOT will featureprize money of 5 millionfor the first time this year, while the Windsor Forest Stakes has been renamed to commemorate the new title givento Prince William.

The 500,000 increase in pursesrepresents a rise of 11 per cent andis part of a total for the 2013 seasonat Ascot of just more than 10m.While that landmark was breachedin 2008, this year's amount doesnot include the 3.4m on offer onBritish Champions Day, which isan industry joint venture.

Ascot has increased prize moneyfor the St James's Palace Stakesand Coronation Stakes by100,000 to 350,000, to bringthem in line with the Queen AnneStakes, King's Stand Stakes and Gold Cup.

The Duke of Cambridge Stakes -the new name for the WindsorForest - has been increased in

value by 25,000 to 125,000.Her Majesty's representative atAscot Johnny Weatherby said:"We're delighted to be able toannounce these prize moneyincreases today. A 5 million RoyalMeeting is a real milestone for thecountry's flagship Flat race meeting.

"We're also naturally thrilled HerMajesty The Queen has graciouslyconsented to renaming the WindsorForest in honour of her grandson, the Duke of Cambridge."

Other notable increases acrossthe meeting include the RoyalHunt Cup and Wokingham risingby 25,000 to 150,000, while theCoventry Stakes and Queen MaryStakes, for which the Ascot executive retains ambitions of promotion to Group 1 status, willbe worth six figure sums in 2013.

Ascot chief executive CharlesBarnett said: "We've worked hardto make the international racescompetitive globally in recent

years and our focus this year has been to enhance the top 3yoraces, the feature handicaps, the 2yo championships and theprogramme generally."

He added: "We have seen someremarkable racing at Ascot inrecent years and, while the importance of winning at RoyalAscot both in terms of prestige andin value to the bloodstock industrycan't be denied, increasing prizemoney is equally crucial to attracting the best horses to run ina highly competitive market."

Ascot hosted 5 of the top 11Group or Grade 1 races in theworld over the past three years, based on an average of the WorldThoroughbred Ranking ratings ofthe first four placed horses, a tablepublished last week by theInternational Federation ofHorseracing Authorities.

Last year Ascot plugged theshortfall from a decline in central

funding by increasing prize moneyby 900,000 to 9.4m - 23 per centof the annual increase in pursesacross all racecourses. Despite thefall in levy being reversed, Ascotsaid it would maintain its position

as the largest executive contributorto prize money. Ascot head of PRNick Smith said: "Having pluggedgaps we're now using the increasewe're getting this year to improveprize money further."

More money to be won at Royal Ascot

MARTIN DWYER hasspoken of his shock atbeing banned from April6 to May 31 after stewards in Indiadeemed he had not allowed a shortpriced favourite to run on its merits in a finish that led toprotests from angry racegoers.

The punishment means Dwyermisses virtually the first twomonths of the British Flat season. The final day of his ban is Oaksday at Epsom where he might haveexpected to ride May Hill Stakessecond Purr Along.

He will also miss the ride on thefilly should she contest the 1000Guineas on May 5.

"I am shocked and extremelydisappointed," Dwyer said. "Iintend to appeal."

The 56 day punishment wasdecided upon at a disciplinary

hearing of the Royal Western IndiaTurf Club last Thursday.

The race at Mahalaxmi inMumbai on February 17 madeheadlines around the world afterDwyer reportedly had to be rescued by security guards asangry racegoers protested at hisriding of Ice Age, the favourite, who ran third.

Head on pictures showedDwyer's mount veering to the rightin the closing stages and collidingwith a rival, after which Dwyerpulled his mount away. When hebegan to ride out Ice Age in thefinal strides, the filly hung rightagain with Dwyer reporting her tohave bled during the race.

Dwyer, a Derby winner on SirPercy in 2006, also addedt: "The vets confirmed about thehorse bleeding during the race

and I even had blood on me at the original hearing.

"I'm trying to get my head roundit, but I will appeal against thisdecision, and will do everything Ican to clear my name."

Local press reports suggestedracegoers surrounded the weighingroom demanding the race bedeclared void. RWITC officialsdeclared Ice Age a non-runner andall bets on her were ordered to berefunded. Later, police were called to prevent the situation getting out of control.

Dwyer's experience has echoesof the 50 day suspension incurredby Richard Hughes in India in2012. That ban was reciprocatedby the BHA and a similar outcomeis likely with Dwyer.

Such an outcome will be stronglyopposed by the Professional

Jockeys Association, whose chiefexecutive Paul Struthers issued astatement critical of Dwyer's ban.

Struthers said: "Martin is bitterlydisappointed about the outcome ofthis hearing and will be lodging anappeal against the decision as amatter of urgency.

"He is entirely innocent of thecharges levelled against him - one

only needs to view the head onreplay of the race to know that -and will fight to clear his name.

"He will have the full support ofthe PJA and in the event his appealfails, our strong advice would be tomake an application to ask theBHA not to reciprocate what in ourview is an entirely unjust and perverse decision."

BLACK CAVIAR extendedher winning sequence to 24races when dismissing hersix William Reid Stakes rivalswith typical ease under the lights atMoonee Valley last Friday.

Having attracted a huge crowd tothe track for the 1200m turf feature, the super mare did not disappoint as she won her 14th consecutiveGroup 1 under a motionless LukeNolen. Although stablemate Karuta

Queen, who finished second, cameinto the home straight about a neckin front, Black Caviar travelledsweetly on her outside and in theblink of an eye she powered clear topost a decisive four length victory.

Her trainer Peter Moody said:"It's scary how well she is going.

"They didn't run a tremendousspat there but the way she let downand quickened she's probablynever handled the Valley that well.

"What do you say - we're lost forwords. There aren't many that canquicken when she says go and it'sjust super to see her in that form."

Black Caviar was following upanother easy victory in last month'sBlack Caviar Lightning Stakes, which has been renamed in herhonour, and joins Kingston Townon an Australian record of 14Group 1 wins.

THE Gai Waterhouse-trainerPierro earned a rave reviewfrom veteran jockey JimCassidy after the 3yo beat MoreJoyous, three years his elder, in theGroup 1 Canterbury Stakes over1300m at Rosehill on Saturday.

Over the past 30 years, Cassidyhas ridden many of the championsof the Australian turf but none asgood as Pierro.

Cassidy labelled the colt the besthe had ever ridden after the 3yobeat glamour mare More Joyous to win the CanterburyStakes on Saturday.

It was the veteran jockey's second Group 1 victory on theRosehill programme and came littlemore than an hour after Foretellertook out the Ranvet Stakes.

Pierro was sent off favourite toextend his unbeaten record inSydney to nine in what had beenbilled as a match race with hisWaterhouse-trained stablemateMore Joyous who had won the race

twice when it was at Group 2 level. As expected, Rain Affair set out infront with Pierro parked third andMore Joyous midfield.

Cassidy made his move onPierro in the straight and he dashedclear with More Joyous gainingground late to finish just under alength in second.

"He is the best horse I've everridden," Cassidy said. "He is anabsolute freak. Might And Powerwas a champion but you had toswitch him off and on. This horseis just so easy to ride."

Cassidy was riding Pierro onlybecause Nash Rawiller was committed to More Joyous. "Shewas in a bit of an awkward spotearly but I thought she was pullingground off him late," Rawiller said.

"I think perhaps the blinkersshould go back on if she is going to run over 1500m in theQueen of the Turf."

John Singleton, owner of MoreJoyous, said the mare's plans

hinged on whether the promise of aA$1 million prize money boost forthe All Aged Stakes materialised. There has been a push over the pastcouple of weeks to attract a starstudded field including BlackCaviar to the 1400m race on

April 27 with a corporate bookmaker saying it would helpwith the funds.

The jockeys Group 1 doublewas initiated by the Chris Waller-trained Foreteller in the2000m Ranvet Stakes.

On the same card, the 1500mGroup 1 Coolmore Classic, waswon by Appearance, owned andbred by HH Sheikh Mohammedbin Rashid Al Maktoum and ridden by Blake Shinn for trainerGuy Walter.

WITH stable jockey JamesDoyle sadly suspended, trainer DhrubaSelvaratnam has secured the services of Jimmy Fortune to partner United Color in the 1200m (Tapeta) Group 1 GoldenShaheen on Dubai World Cupnight on Saturday.

American-bred, United Colorwas a Group 3 winner in Italy forprevious connections last year andjust failed to catch course specialist, and dual Jebel Ali Sprint

winner Russian Rock, on his localdebut in a 1200m conditions race atJebel Ali. He then seemingly failed to stay an extra furlong when third in a similar race on thesame course, where he is trained, before again finishing third in a1200m handicap.

Switched to Meydan and Tapeta,he then won a handicap on his only Carnival start, with Doyle inthe saddle and has not been seensince that win on the last day of February.

Selvaratnam said: He was ahorse we had high hopes for whenwe acquired him and he has done well. That first run behind Russian Rock was verygood and we were obviouslydelighted with his Meydan winafter which World Cup night wasalways the target.

Obviously it is a much better race but he is in good form and with James not available we have booked Jimmy Fortune.

MR BROCK, former starhandicapper in SouthAfrica, Mauritius, Dubaiand Abu Dhabi, has taken up a newcareer as a showjumper.

The now 9yo gelding is based atSummerveld with Errin Dempsey, who has already enjoyed muchsuccess with another former Mikede Kock runner, Equal Image.

Errin tells: After his years ofracing in Dubai, Mr Brocks ownerSerge Seenyen wanted him toretire back here in South Africa, soMike and Diane de Kock offered him to me. At the time hewas already in quarantine in South Africa.

Mr Brock came to me in Junelast year and it took us a little bit oftime getting him back into thingsas he had enjoyed a long holiday. But in his short time with us he hasfitted into our family along withEqual Image.

Mr Brock has a lovely bigjump; he is currently at 80cm andlearning his new job well, he lovesjumping but, if he touches a pole, Ireally have to hang on tight; hegets very cross, kicking out andgroaning and rocketing off, luckilyhe doesnt do that often!

At the end of 2012 he competed in the KZN ShowingChamps in the Novice class as thatis where you have to start. He wasplaced 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each ofhis classes, which is really goodconsidering he was only fourmonths out of quarantine.

Then a month later, in January2013 he contested our KZNDressage Champs. He was placed in all his classes with great percentages getting 67%, 68% and a 69%.

Mr Brock is super brave and Iam really enjoying him. He is afast learner and tries hard no

matter what new obstacle you facehim with. He is very sensitivethough, so I have to ask nicely otherwise he gets upset with me.He is very different to Equal Imagethat way, but will hopefully followin his footsteps.

He is very clever, too. Heknows when the fences are notworking and just goes straightthrough them. I found him a coupleof times wandering through mymums garden and, after he hasworked, he refuses to go back tohis stable with my grooms until hehas had a sweet or carrots or cubes. And if you are taking too long todo anything you will get a little nipfrom him to hurry you up!

He has been entered forEventing competitions this yearand were hoping he will love it.

Mr Brock, by Fort Wood fromCape Badger, raced 35 times for 8wins and 11 places. He is one of

only a few horses to have competed in the UAE in four different Carnival seasons, between 2009 and 2012, winning three times in Dubai

and once in Abu Dhabi when heran on gamely to win the 2009Listed Abu Dhabi Championshipover 2200m in the hands of Kevin Shea.

    Mr Brock enjoying new life

MILITARY Attack, whohad been considered apossible for thisevening's Dubai Duty Free, stayedat home in Hong Kong and justified the decision of his trainerJohn Moore when winningSunday's Group 3 Premier PlateHandicap over the same 1m1f turftrip as the Group 1 feature he misses tonight. Zac Purton was inthe saddle and the pair now appear

genuine contenders for theAudemars Piguet QEII Cup at the end of April.

Formerly known as Rave whentrained in England by John Hills,Military Attack easily won the

Group 1 Hong Kong Gold Cupover 1m2f last month with Purtonin the saddle for the first time whenthe Oratorio gelding raced muchmore prominently than he had previously in Hong Kong. On thisoccasion Purton seized the initiative again as he went forwardwhen every other jockey seemedcontent to bide their time.

Even though he carried topweight of 9st 7lb, Military Attackwas hardly taxed in settingdawdling sections before kickingclear in the straight to score by halfa length from Aomen, another formerly trained in the UK.

"He dictated terms and stayedon well. He's really earned a crackat the QEII Cup now and Zac gets on great with him. He's onlyfive and I think he still has plenty more to offer," trainer John Moore said before jetting

out to Dubai where he saddles Frederick Engels in theGolden Shaheen.

Hong Kong are also representedat tonight's big meeting by JoyAnd Fun and Eagle Regiment inthe Al Quoz Sprint.

Jockey Doug Whyte rode fourwinners on the card before beginning a two-meeting suspension next week and Purton,Whyte's nearest pursuer, remains inthe champion's slipstream and wasprobably lucky to benefit fromWhyte's one mishap on the daywhen Little Men was badly hampered in traffic enablingPurton's mount to win and make thejockeys championship read 65-59at the end of the meeting.

The season does not end untilJuly and there is still plenty to playfor, but Whyte remains favourite towin a 13th consecutive title.

AMEETING betweenequine legends Frankeland Black Caviar neverhappened on the track, but adate at the breeding sheds coulddetermine if Australias supermare returns to RoyalAscot this summer.

Unbeaten in 24 starts, withher latest win achieved in theGroup 1 William Reid Stakes atMoonee Valley last week, connections of Black Caviarsaid in the aftermath of the victory that a return to the sceneof her narrow head defeat of

Moonlight Cloud in theDiamond Jubilee Stakes wasunder consideration.

However, that trip couldhinge on a potential meetingwith Frankel in his new role as a stallion.

Frankel covering BlackCaviar would cause worldwideinterest, and co-owner GaryWilkie, quoted in an article onRacing Network, said: The only reason you would goto Royal Ascot is that you are going to go to Frankel. Were not going to Royal

Ascot if we cant go to Frankel.Thats the issue not all the otherbits and pieces. We have a lotof decisions to make.

Wilkie added that a meetingbetween the owners could happen in the next week as theyaim to map out the remainder ofBlack Caviars season.

Randwicks TJ Smith Stakes next month is a potential target, and victory inthe race would set a newAustralian record of Group 1wins, passing Kingston Towns record of 14.

AIDAN O'BRIEN has admitted that Group 1 winner Kingsbarns couldmiss the 2000 Guineas after suffering a setback in training.

The Racing Post Trophy winner, unbeaten in two starts, was generally 8-1 for Newmarket andwas due to work at the Curragh onSunday. However, he developed aninfection after tearing off a shoeduring a routine canter and O'Brienimplied that time may run out onthe horse with a view to the

season's first Classic on May 4."You'd have to worry about theGuineas. He didn't do anything forabout 10 days after his setback," hesaid at the Curragh on Sunday.

"It's nothing major but I wantedhim to be here to work today and Itried to get him here, so theGuineas is a worry. For our horsesto go to the Guineas without a run, they normally need to be here."

THE weather may have been icycold but the Jim Bolger stablewas red hot as racing returned to Ireland on Sunday on The Curragh with the trainer claimingfour winners.

The highlight was the win ofRehns Nest in the featured Group 3Park Express Stakes, at the time the handlers third win from as many runners.

The streak began in the very first race of the season as Saburo took the 5f 2yo maiden under jockey Kevin Manning beforeCaesaria added the 6f 3yo maiden

for the same combination.Saburo was winning the same racewon last year by stable companionand subsequent Champion JuvenileDawn Approach and Bolger said: I would like to think he will follow asimilar path - certainly in the first partof the season - he can hopefully get toRoyal Ascot with a big chance.

Rory Cleary took over on RehnsNest but the result was the same as the3yo tracked pace-setting More ThanSotka before taking over with two furlongs to run.

Rehns Nest, carrying the familiarwhite and purple silks of Bolgers

wife Jackie, stuck on gamely downthe centre of the track and was always holding Yellow Rosebud. It was the first time Rehns Nest hadfound her way into the winnersenclosure and Bolger said: She gotthrough the ground which is unusualfor one of mine nowadays. But I dontthink she is ground dependent.

Shes in the Irish 1000 Guineasand the Irish Oaks and as she is out ofa Galileo mare I think she should geta mile and a half.

GOING low was the highpriority as connections ofthe 13 runners in todaysDubai World Cup helped to makethe draw for the worlds richestThoroughbred horserace atMeydan on Wednesday.

First on to the podium,Godolphin racing manager SimonCrisford plumped for gate four forlast years runner-up Capponi, buthe was left to rue the random natureof the exercise when, as 11thchoice, he had to decide betweenthe three widest lanes for the teamsprogressive African Story.

Stall 11 will house African Story, while the remaining Godolphinnominees Monterosso, last yearswinner, and Kassiano are in numbers 10 and 13 respectively.

Reflecting on the outcome,Crisford said: Hunters Light hasa good draw and should be able totake up whatever position his jockey [Sylvestre de Sousa] feelsis best, but its not so good forAfrican Story, who would havebeen better with anything betweenone and seven.

The draw is fine for bothMonterosso and Kassiano.

Preference for a slot nearer theinside rail than on the outer

reaches leans heavily on statistics.Since the opening of Meydan in2010, gate four has produced mostwinners over the World Cupcourse and distance followed byone and seven while in the bigrace itself nine of the horses whohave filled the first four placesover the three runnings have comefrom the lower half of the draw.

Only one horse to make the firstfour in the World Cup last yearsrunner-up Capponi has had a double-figure draw, an omen thatwas not lost on the internationalconnections of 2011 KentuckyDerby winner Animal Kingdom.Barry Irwin, the principal for

Animal Kingdoms joint ownerTeam Valour, reflected, withoutsounding convincing: Hopefullythe post position wont be that bad.

Representatives of the other USrunners, Dullahan (drawn three onjockey Gary Stevens comebacknight ) and Royal Delta (drawneight as she bids to make up forlast years disappointment),emerged from the presentationwith more positive observations.

Dullahans nominee pointed outthat the 4yos most recent win wason a synthetic surface from stallthree, while Royal Deltas trainerBill Mott was happy to take gateeight out of 11 possibles.

Mott, who saddled the very firstDubai World Cup winner in Cigar, hinted that if Royal Delta isbeaten, the draw will not be usedas an excuse.

Shes bigger and stronger thanlast year, when she didnt have theeasiest of trips through the race,he said, and we hope all goes well this time.

Coral prices after post-positiondraw: 4 Hunters Light, 5 RoyalDelta, 11-2 Animal Kingdom, 8African Story, 10 Planteur,Dullahan, 16 Capponi, Kassiano, Monterosso, RedCadeaux, 20 Side Glance, Treasure Beach, Meandre.

COMPREHENSIVELY outstanding during theDubai World CupCarnival, with 27 winners, andscintillating on Super Saturday, landing four of the seven races forThoroughbreds can Godolphinend the Emirates season in similar high-flying fashion onWorld Cup night?

The single richest days racing inthe world was SheikhMohammeds creation, and hisGodolphin team has done himproud at Nad Al Sheba and Meydanover the previous 17 years.

Saeed bin Suroor, who markedthe inaugural card in 1996 with adouble through Kassbaan (GoldenShaheen) and Tereshkova(Godolphin Mile), is by a long wayleading trainer for winners (29)and runners (231).

He has landed a treble on thenight three times and had two winners on six other occasions, butsurprisingly drew a blank last year. His most successful multiple racescores are five in the World Cup though not since 2006 seven inthe UAE Derby out of 13 runnings, and nine of the 17 stagings of theGodolphin Mile.

Mahmood Al Zarooni,Godolphins more recent trainer, made an instant hit, winning the

Godolphin Mile with CalmingInfluence in 2010 only days after being granted a licence on hisown account.

He landed the Sheema Classicwith Rewilding the following year, and 12 months ago really hit thehighspots, claiming a one-two inthe World Cup with Monterossoand Capponi, and taking the DubaiGold Cup with Opinion Poll, tomake his score four winners from22 runners.

Today, Godolphin goes into battle with 23 runners. Here thetwo UAE-based trainers discusstheir prospects of extending theteams remarkable record.

    DUBAIWORLD CUP

African Story 6yo Saeed binSuroor Kieren Fallon

SBS: I think his best trip will bea mile and a quarter, which is whyhe is running here this year.Everything has gone smoothly withhis preparation, and it is all systemsgo. He can run a good race.

Capponi 6yo Mahmood AlZarooni Ahmad Ajtebi

MAZ: Capponi had the summer off and has taken a longtime to come to hand, which iswhy he hasnt had a prep run. There have been some issues buthe is well at the moment anddeserves to take his chance.

Hunters Light 5yo Bin SuroorSilvestre de Sousa

SBS: He is improving andtough, and likes the Tapeta surface. He will be there at the endbecause he has a big heart. A mileand a quarter is his best trip for himand he has pleased me in the run-up to this race, his biggest test.

    Kassiano 4yo Bin SuroorWilliam Buick

SBS: Kassiano has done reallywell this year, showing greatimprovement as he has gone on.He is in good form and must begiven a chance.

    Monterosso 6yo Al ZarooniMickael Barzalona

MAZ: I am very happy that Iwon the Dubai World Cup lastyear with Monterosso and also hadthe second in Capponi. It is a winner this year for both to run inthe race again, because it is alwaysdifficult to keep horses at theirvery peak. Monterosso has comeon for his first run and is in goodform, but there is wear and tear andhis training has not been 100 percent smooth.

    GODOLPHIN MILE

Alpha 4yo Bin Suroor De SousaSBS: I was disappointed with

his first run for me, and he doesntusually show a lot when he worksin the mornings, but we are giving

him a chance in what will be hislast race before he returns toAmerica. He wears a visor tosharpen him up over a mile.

    Time Prisoner 6yo Al ZarooniBarzalona

MAZ: His best trip is sevenfurlongs but he has won over amile, though it wasnt a good race.I just hope the extra furlong doesnt stop him from showing his best.

Saamidd 5yo Bin Suroor BuickSBS: Saamidd has been

working well and a mile is fine forhim, as long as he comes out of thestalls faster from his outside draw,to take up a good early position, than in his last two races.

Moonwalk In Paris 5yo AlZarooni Ajtebi

MAZ: He is in good form andthe distance suits him, but it is allabout the pace of the race. We planto drop him in and sit and wait. Ifthey go a good pace, it will help himovercome any disadvantage frombeing drawn 15, but a slow pacewould make life very difficult.

    DUBAI GOLD CUP

Ahzeemah 4yo Bin Suroor FallonSBS: Ahzeemah does not

really show a lot in his work, but he won his last race pleasinglyand the longer trip will suit him better.

    Cavalryman 7yo Bin SuroorDe Sousa

SBS: The step back up to twomiles will suit him. So far so good, and we are looking for an excellentrun from him.

    Tenenbaum 4yo Al ZarooniBarzalona

MAZ: He needed his first runof the year, when he jumped a bitslowly. I hope he will be muchsharper. He is in good form and Ithink he has a good chance. Twomiles should be no problem.

    UAE DERBY

    Now Spun 3yo Al ZarooniBarzalona

MAZ: Now Spun is doing really well. He is a nice sort, with improvement in him, and I hope his turf form will translateto Tapeta.

Secret Number 3yo BinSuroor De Sousa

SBS: Secret Number is improving all the time and doingreally well. He is unbeaten and Iam sure he has the class to run a big race.

    Shuruq 3yo Bin Suroor PaulHanagan

SBS: Shuruq won really, reallywell in the UAE Oaks over thesame course and distance, whichshe seems to stay well. I am hopingfor another good performance

MAZ: Snowboarder needsencouragement, but Mickael[Barzalona] lost his whip in thefinal furlong last time. I think hewill run a better race as there is alittle improvement in him. One dayhe will win again.

    DUBAI GOLDEN SHAHEEN

Mental 4yo Al Zarooni BarzalonaMAZ: Mental is very relaxed

and calm for a sprinter. We didntdeclare him with blinkers last time, which is why he came very late. Now he will wear blinkers, as heused to do in Australia, whichshould make him sharper from thestalls and in the race. The way hewon last time shows he is a verygood horse.

    DUBAI DUTY FREE

Aesops Fables 4yo Bin Suroor FallonSBS: He ran well first time out,

when needing the race, and youcan forget his performance last

time as did not seem to like theTapeta surface.

City Style 7yo Al Zarooni BarzalonaMAZ: He is the type who can

come second in a maiden and thensecond in a Group 1. He is a bit clever and I am not sure hewants to be in front. Still, he is in the best form of his life and we will ride him handily andhope for another good performance.

Sajjhaa 6yo Bin Suroor De SousaSBS: Sajjhaa won her first

Group 1 and is unbeaten in Dubaithis year. She is in the right race,

though she faces better horses thistime, but her class should meananother good run.

Fulbright 4yo Al Zarooni AjtebiMAZ: There is no doubt he is a

good horse and I think he canimprove. He has been unlucky in atleast one race this year, but isdoing everything in the right wayand is spot on.

    DUBAI SHEEMA CLASSIC

    Prince Bishop 6yo BinSuroor Barzalona

    SBS: He disappointed in last

years World Cup but has run wellon turf and I think a mile and a halfis his best trip. We are happy withhim, though he might prefer a littlecut in the ground.

    Sharestan 5yo Bin Suroor DeSousa

SBS: He won well first timeand was unlucky on his secondrun. I think he will stay and hopehe runs a good race.

  • THE Al Baloushi brothersRashed Ahmed and YousefAhmed led a 1-2 finish in theDubai Crown Prince Cup for the AlReef Stables to finally break theshackles of winning a majorendurance silverware for the season.

The Abu Dhabi stables havebeen a dominant player for morethan a decade but they, however, found a sudden dip in the form oftheir horses this season.

It was bound to happen sooneror later but to win a major prizetowards the end was a very satisfying result, Yousef Ahmed, the older sibling who trained both, the winner and the runner up, said.

This was our worst season inmore than 10 years and this is notunusual in sport. We had a fewpodium finishes and this 1-2 finishwas some reward for the hard work.

It was a very close race and anyone from the top 10 in the lastloop could have won. The conditions were very tough at thistime of the year with the temperatures rising. At the end, it allworked out well for us this time.

Rashed Ahmed left the best forthe last on Davlyn Park Picasso toemerge winner of the 120km CEI2-star ride at the DubaiInternational Endurance City over the weekend.

He moved up nine places in thefinal 20km loop, clocking an average speed of 37.97 to cross thefinishing line in over 4 hours 4minutes to win from YousefAhmed on Elphyn Silverlight.

They also kept the prestigiousprize within the family for the second time as Sultan Ahmed, theyoungest of the three siblings, wasthe winner on Cronus last year.

Butti Mohammad Al Merri onGlenewan Pebble finished third tojoin the Al Baloushi brothers onthe podium. The top three to finish the race received RangeRover vehicles.

Saeed Ahmed Al Harb on LaCrysada who led in to the final loopcould finish only sixth.

Saeed Saqer Al Ameri onRowallan Simon was the winner from Saif Mubarak AlKhaili onboard Ib Indio andMohammed Aida on LC Benicio.Al Ameri stayed on strongly after

to lead in the last two loops to crossthe finishing line first, more thaneight minutes ahead of Al Khaili, who improved four places to take

second from Aida. There weremore vehicles presented for the top three riders in the Dubai Crown Prince Cup for private

owners and stables the previous day, in the race worked off over the same 120km distance.

FOUR years after their epicclashes on the track, SeaThe Stars andMastercraftsman are again squaring up to do battle, but thistime the pair will be a hundredmiles apart as they and 14 otherstallions prepare to contend thefirst season sire title.

Won last year by Champion SireGalileo's son New Approach, thanks in a large part to theexploits of his undefeated Classichope Dawn Approach and fellowRoyal Ascot winners Tha'ir andNewfangled, this year it isGalileo's half-brother Sea TheStars who garners favouritism for the crown.

With the market priced up byStan James, the son of Arc winnerUrban Sea is currently 4-9 to land the title and it is 11-10 that hisfirst crop yields at least one Group 1 winner.

Joseph Burke of Stan Jamessaid: "Sea The Stars was one of thebest Flat horses I have ever had thepleasure of watching and the easewith which he beat numerousGroup 1 winners was a joy tobehold. Not only had he the class, but he also possessed the temperament to go with it andthat's an all important trait whenconsidering his offspring.

"His trainer John Oxx will handle 14 of his progeny this

season while Sir Michael Stoutehas six and John Gosden three. When you consider that other representatives from his first crop are with successful trainerssuch as Mark Johnston, Ger Lyons, William Haggas, TommyStack, Roger Varian and DermotWeld, it would be a surprise if hisprogeny did not prove the mostsuccessful in 2013.

"In the battle for the number ofindividual winners, there are fourstallions who should theoreticallyfight this out," says Burke.

"Mastercraftsman just shadesfavouritism at 2-1 this year overBushranger. He was the better 2yo on the track and has

plenty of representatives sprinkled around various yards that would be associated withtraining winning juveniles.

"There are numerousBushranger's with various trainers

this season including the likes ofMick Channon, Richard Hannonand Tom Dascombe, and youwould expect if they were to make their mark, it would be as juveniles."
