Capacity‐Building Grant leads tofurther investment for TB andDiabetes researchAITHM scientists are training health care providers inPNG to diagnose and treat diabetes and TB with thehelp of mobile phones.

Following a successful Capacity Building Grant, leadresearcher, Associate Professor Usman Malabu has now received a World Diabetes Foundationgrant of US $228,000 for the project.

Fellowship helps research get awriggle on

An Advance Queensland Fellowship will enableAITHM researcher Paul Giacomin to extend hisinvestigations into the benefits of parasitic worms forpeople with coeliac disease.

His Fellowship funds of $300,000 over three yearswill be matched by $150,000 from the Australian Institute of Tropical Health and Medicine(AITHM) and $150,000 from the Prince Charles Hospital Foundation to support his researchinto the use of hookworm proteins to treat coeliac disease.

Health economics bolsters AITHMresearchHealth economics is a new and much neededcapacity in AITHM. When introducing new treatmentsor changes in health systems, health economicsassists in demonstrating a good investment, alongwith a positive patient, hospital, individual or healthsystem outcomes.

AITHM researchers can now engage and benefitfrom Dr Callander’s skills in this area and boost the level of economic analysis into their studies.

AITHM scientists develop the first‘pharmacological’ tourniquetAITHM scientists have developed a potentiallyrevolutionary drug therapy that treats shock and actslike a “pharmacological tourniquet” by dramaticallyreducing internal blood loss by up to 60%, which hasthe potential to save countless lives.

US Special Operations Command (SOCOM) has recently granted the project US $532,349 sothe pair can continue their work.

New front opens in fight against MSProfessor Alan Baxter and Dr Margaret Jordan will take anew approach to unravelling the mysteries of multiplesclerosis (MS). The research will manipulate genes withinnetworks of cells rather than looking at cells in isolation.They recently received a $240,000 grant from MS ResearchAustralia to fund their work for the next three years.

Vanina GuernierDr Vanina Guernier is an epidemiologist with broad interests including Molecular Biology,Evolutionary Biology and Ecology and has joined AITHM as a Research Fellow.

She has worked previously on tuberculosis, leptospirosis and arboviruses. Vanina has alsopreviously worked in the tropics including Reunion Island and French Guiana. This role will befocusing on Tuberculosis Epidemiology including Phylo­epidemiology in Western Province,Papua New Guinea.

Gebeyaw MekonnenWe would like to welcome PhD candidate Gebeyaw Mekonnen to the team. Based in Cairns,supervised by Prof Alex Loukas and Dr Javier Sotillo, Gebeyaw’s project will investigateextracellular vesicles secreted by the Schistosoma hematobium and their implication in host­parasite interactions.

We would like to welcome Masters of Science candidate Sylvia Saggiomo and PhD candidateDamian Rigg to the team. Based in Cairns, the research higher degrees candidates will besupervised by Associate Professor Jamie Seymour.

New Board MembersAITHM has recently welcomed the appointment of three new Board Directors who have joinedthe Advisory Board.

AITHM Board Chairman, the Honourable Dr Michael Wooldridge officially welcomed Dr PeterBristow, Professor Zee Upton and Mr Tony Wood to the Advisory Board at the AITHM BoardMeeting in Cairns recently.

Construction

Townsville: Construction on Townsville has beenextended to 26 August with commissioning ofintegrated services delaying practical completion. 

Cairns: Preferred tenderer value management hasbeen finalised, with re­documentation to becompleted by 8 July. Construction is expected tocommence in August 2016. 

Thursday Island: Construction commenced with contractor, Hutchison site established on 20June. Completion expected February 2017. 

Capacity‐Building Grants 2016

The AITHM Capacity Building Grants are funded through a total of $2.5M from the QueenslandDepartment of Science, Information Technology and Innovation for the purpose of providingseed funding to establish collaborative projects with strategic partners.  $1.5M was budgeted forthe AITHM Capacity Building Grants in 2015 and a further $1M will be awarded in 2016.

The grants were assessed by both internal and external assessors. For the 2016 round a totalof 42 applications were received, with 17 being supported. This is a success rate of 40 percent.

Congratulations to Roni Nugraha and Sandip Kamath who have been awarded 2016 travelbursaries to attend the Australasian Society for Immunology International Congress ofImmunology. Well done to both Roni and Sandip!
