All Pakistan AirEx ’11 Innovation Challenge

AirEx ’11 Innovation Challenge is an opportunity to test you against the mighty brains of this country and scrutinize your abilities and potentials before the inevitable dive into the realms and rigors of professional life.

The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics GIKI Chapter has taken this initiative basically to promote the culture of science and technology in the country and to inculcate the practice of thinking critically over technical problems. The event will act as a platform to gather talented minds and aspiring individuals in a challenging environment and to let them hone their skills gained over more than 10 years of schooling. By competing against the very best in the country from every nook and cranny, the participants will be able to muster competitiveness and resilience in their persona.

Pakistan is a developing country and natural resource base that has all ingredients to help it to boom in near future. To put the country’s growth on a sound footing and a solid base, it needs a workforce that is capable of withstanding modern technological challenges and competing against the WTO-envisioned global economic model. This event is a small endeavor by AIAA-GIKI Chapter in this direction to instill the doctrines of research, analytical thinking, problem solving and decision-making. AirEx ’11 Innovation Challenge is conceived to guide the participants to correlate their academic and theoretical knowledge acquired over the years to its practical significance and implementation.

This is a new event envisaged by AIAA to complement its landmark and famed event ‘Design, Build and Fly Competition’ that it has been organizing for the past 6 years in collaboration with HEC and STEM Careers. AIAA aims to make this event a truly success story that can yield further such projects in the country. To maintain the standards of the event and the vigor and enthusiasm in the student volunteers of the society, AIAA has an advisory board that is led by Dean of Mechanical Engineering Faculty, Dr. Abid. This board will also assist the society in jurisdiction during the event.

Event Organizer: AIAA GIKI Chapter

Event Location: Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology

Event Date: 2nd to 4th December 2011

Registration fee: Rs. 2500 per participant (to be paid in second phase of registration)

Take a look through what we are actually offering and make the most out of this grand opportunity at a stage as big as Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute and a competition of All-Pakistan stature.

Note: The detailed rules of event modules would be communicated to the participants after first phase of registration.

Event Modules

AERO BIZ:Designing is an essential principle in the modern world of Aeronautics. Keeping this in mind AIAA GIKI Chapter have introduced another exciting module in Airex'11 that will challenge the participant’s creative and analytical abilities, as they will be competing to model a simple aircraft in limited time. Participants will be provided with the materials as mentioned below:

• Card Board• Styrofoam• Chart Papers• Straws• Glue• Tape• Measuring Tape• Cutter

HIGH IN THE SKY:The era of RC-Plane is an emerging field when it comes to Aeronautics. Just like the Design Build and Fly Competition organized by the same society, participants would be required to design, fabricate, and demonstrate the flight capabilities of an unmanned electric/engine powered, radio controlled aircraft that can best meet the specified mission profile. The goal is to make a balanced design that possesses good flight

handling qualities and must be practical and affordable. This showdown will provide a real world aircraft design experience for engineering students by giving them the opportunity to validate their analytic studies, and would engulf them in the adrenaline of competing against the best in the country.

SKY WARS:The mission is to design a Water-Rocket Vehicle capable of reaching the highest altitude, possible given specific launch criteria. While promoting Space Propulsion Awareness, the Water Bottle Rocket Competition serves to familiarize students with the basic principles of rocketry, design engineering, and manufacturing engineering. Participants will design and manufacture a water rocket using a 1.5/2.25-Liter bottle as the pressure vessel. The rocket must be capable of launching from the Water Rocket Launcher given specific launch criteria.

BEAT GRAVITY THE WRIGHT WAY:Students will design and build a glider made of balsa wood, which will be judged on their flight. The glider will be launched by means of rubber bands. The following are the only materials may be used to build the glider:

• Balsa Wood • Rubber bands• Paints• Tape• Tissue Paper• Glue

ASTRO TECH:Astro Tech is a traditional Space Settlement Project module. The purpose of this innovative project is to design a self-sufficient space settlement according to the following constraints: a reasonable population size; minimal mass from Earth; break no physical laws; reasonable extrapolations of existing technology; clean internal environment; minimal leaks; use metric units.

It should consider the economic factors and the technological barriers. You should consider the technology of near future, any technology should be clearly justified for example if you are planning to use a fusion reactor you should justify the process to contain the super-hot plasma!

The end product of this project includes a written proposal, a model with drawing of your settlement, and an oral group presentation.

Teams of up to 4 students will design a self-sufficient space settlement for up to 10,000 residents.

Each team will research and prepare a written proposal for their space settlement. Also, they will construct a model of their orbital space settlement. Each individual team member will keep a journal to be turned in with the final project. This is your proof you contributed to the team.

CONQUER THE SKY:Flight Simulator is one of the most anticipated modules. AIAA GIKI-Chapter has been organizing this prestigious event for the past decade. The best virtual pilots from all across the country will compete in front of experienced judges in order to earn the title of the Flight Simulator Champion. Traditional flight simulator games like Microsoft Flight Simulator would be used for the competition.

IDEAS HUTCH:Calling all innovative minds!! This module is not only for young aeronautical engineers but also for the business freaks! It will enable participants to demonstrate their crazy innovative ideas. There are four categories in this module.

1. Solution Search: What solution you can bring for the problems of the 21st century?

2. Engineers Park: Do you have any crazy engineering idea or project?

3. Business Storm: What business idea/plan would you bring to create a good market value and earn enough to fulfill basic necessities of your life?

4. Future Fantasy: What is the future of this universe and mankind? How our lives would look like in 2050?

KALEIDOSCOPE:This module is for those, who have keen interest in arts and aeronautics at the same time. In this module participants will have to display their creativity by sketching, drawing or painting an aero scene or an imaginary fighter jet, helicopter, space shuttle, airline jet or any other aero-vehicle.

Participants will be provided with the following materials:

• 3x3 Chart Paper (Total of 6 Chart Papers joined together).• Poster Paints.• Lead Pencils.• Charcoal Pencils.• Crayon.• Eraser.• Ruler.• Colored Pencils.
