Aireborough Lions 2016-17 Season - Welcome Pack A message from your junior section chairman September 2016 Hello and welcome to Aireborough Rugby Club. My son, Mikey, who currently captains the U16s, once asked me many years ago (He was 4 at the time and had just started playing rugby) “Dad, why do you coach Rugby?” At that time I had been playing rugby for 34 of my (then) 45 years. So I told him “I have been playing Rugby so far for 34 years, I have enjoyed every minute of my time playing, I have made so many friends who will remain friends forever and have had great times with those friends that I will never forget. So I want to put something back into Rugby to repay what I have received from it” “Oh” he said “So are you going to coach for 34 years?” Well not quite but you never know. Here I am 12 years on still coaching and still putting back in to what is, to me, the greatest sport ever. The point that I try to make though is that what I told Mikey all those years ago is so very true. Stick with the game and both you and your child will make friendships that last a lifetime and receive so much enjoyment along the way. Yes I know those words will come back to haunt me on a very cold day in December, but the warmth and friendship that you receive in the clubhouse after the match more than makes up for it! Below you will find all sorts of information that will, hopefully, answer any questions you may have about the club, the who, what, where, when, why and how. If there is anything that you are not sure about please just ask, anyone, if they don’t know they’ll point you in the right direction. More often than not I can be found either roaming around the various pitches while the kids are training/playing or in the bar afterwards. Please don’t hesitate to speak with me. I am very approachable (despite appearances) and I don’t bite! All that remains (apart from another 22 years of coaching) is for me to welcome you to the club. Enjoy! September 2016

Hello and welcome to Aireborough Rugby Club. My son, Mikey, who currently captains the U16s, once asked me many years ago (He was 4 at the time and had just started playing rugby) “Dad, why do you coach Rugby?” At that time I had been playing rugby for 34 of my (then) 45 years. Here I am 12 years on still coaching and still putting back in to what is, to me, the greatest sport ever. The point that I try to make though is that what I told Mikey all those years ago is so very true. Useful information • Our club website at http://www.pitchero.com/clubs/aireborough is the best place

to start. Here you’ll find up-to date fixture lists, results and other news for all of the junior section teams. Register and you’ll receive regular updates to your mailbox. Also search for Aireborough Lions and Aireborough RUFC on Facebook for more of the social side of things.

• All teams play on Sunday mornings. Generally you’ll need to be at the venue (home or away) around 10am, sometimes earlier if it’s a festival. Make sure players have their Aireborough kit, boots, gum shield and scrum cap (for those age groups playing full contact), a change of clothes and a towel. Don’t forget your water bottle.

• We run a kit exchange at the club every Sunday – please bring boots, shirts etc that are too small and exchange for something that fits!

• During training sessions and matches, spectators must stay off the pitch and behind any barriers unless expressly invited onto the pitch by a coach. Parents / guardians remain responsible for children at all other times.

• A free hot meal will be provided after every game, and usually after training sessions too. Please ensure that as a minimum, players have clean hands and shoes before entering the clubhouse.

Donec sit amet arcu.

Rugby isn’t just a sport. It’s a way of life.

The majority of our coaching team here at Aireborough RUFC started out as I did. A parent, stood on the sideline on a cold Sunday morning, watching their child play our beautiful game, and, over time, slowly integrated in to the coaching structure of that particular age group.

At Aireborough our coaching philosophy is simple, We are firm believers that if you have knowledge pass it on to those who do not. We also believe that playing rugby as a child not only builds character and confidence but also gives a sense of accomplishment. It also prepares children for life, teaching them about working as a team or as a team player.

Each coach at the club will embrace and enforce the five core values of rugby. Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship - these are what makes the game special for those who enjoy the environment and culture they create, skill sets that I’m sure you will all agree set solid foundations for there future. They define the game and define Rugby at Aireborough RUFC.

Myself and all the coaches from all age groups wish you a warm welcome to the club, and look forward to another rewarding season working together.

Kris Brook - Aireborough RUFC Coaching Coordinator.

Coaching

After the game

The post-match meal is an important part of the rugby experience. All players and parents are invited and encouraged to stay for food, a drink and a chat after the game. A hot meal is provided free to all home and visiting players. This service is managed by your catering coordinators:

Sandra Bishop 07852 430975 and Jo Smith 07941 319674

We ask that all parents volunteer to help in the kitchen at least once per season (in teams of 2 or 3). This involves cooking or reheating food (both breakfasts and post-match meals), serving players and paying customers, and cleaning up afterwards. A rota will be arranged via each age group’s coaches. For more information or to volunteer before you are press-ganged, please contact Sandra or Jo.

The club expresses its thanks to Sandra and Jo for their continued efforts in keeping us all fed and watered.

Safeguarding

Airebrough RUFC Junior Section adopts standard safeguarding policies and procedures as per England Rugby guidelines. The safeguarding officers are Matt and Jo Smith. If you have any concerns or questions regarding safeguarding, please contact Matt in the first instance at [email protected] / 07833 088570 Please be aware of the following policy statement with regards to changing rooms and showers: Adults and children must never use the same facilities to shower or change at the same time. Adults must only enter changing rooms when absolutely necessary due to poor behaviour, injury or illness. Adults must only ever enter the changing rooms by themselves in an emergency and when waiting for another adult could result in harm to a child. If children need supervising in changing rooms, or coaches or managers need to carry out a range of tasks in that environment this must involve two individuals cleared to work in Regulated Activity of the same gender as the children. For mixed gender activities separate facilities should be available. If the same facilities must be used by adults and children on the same day a clear timetable should be established. No pressure should be placed on children who feel uncomfortable changing or showering with others, if this is the case they should be allowed to shower and change at home. Where a disability requires significant support from a parent or carer, the person concerned and their parents should decide how they should be assisted to change or shower. Before any assistance is offered by another person, appropriate consent should be given by a parent.

Photography Please do not post photos containing images of children other than your own, to any internet / social media site without the express permission of the parent/guardian of those in the picture. Injuries Please ensure that any injuries sustained during games or training sessions, however minor they may seem, are reported to either a first aider or a coach immediately. It is important that the club is aware of any injuries, in particular head injuries where the correct ‘head case’ procedures must be followed if there may be concussion. The Aireborough RUFC Child Protection Policy is available on request from the safeguarding officers, or can be downloaded from the documents section of the website: www.pitchero.com/clubs/aireborough/d/documents.html?group_id=0

Get involved!

The Junior Section Committee meets once a month, on the second-to-last Thursday of the month, in the Ings pub at 7.30pm. Come along and help your club! We are always looking for volunteers to help out with catering and the tuck shop on Sundays, sponsorship, fundraising, social and recruitment events etc. The committee looks after the finances and all aspects of the operation and governance of the club. We have members representing us at ANSA meetings too – this is the Aireborough Nunroyd Sports Association, who own and maintain the clubhouse. A large proportion of your subscription fees go towards the upkeep, utility bills and development of this great facility. Don’t forget, your child can earn a £20 refund against their subs for every new player they recruit into the club. We are always looking to build numbers in each squad. Above all, just get down to the club, support the junior teams (and the seniors on Saturdays!) and enjoy being part of a great family.
