Meet Your Fellow Lion By Lion Ann Kellett

This week: Lion David Jones

Where did you grow up? Go to school? As an Army brat, I moved a lot. I was born in Lawton, Okla. (Ft. Sill) and attended 12 schools before graduating from high school in Baltimore, Md. (Ft. Holabird). By the time I was a year old, I had traveled from Oklahoma to Florida (Camp Blanding) and Massachusetts (Camp Edwards) with my mother as we followed the troop train carrying my dad and the 36th Infantry Division training for the invasion of Italy. Living on Okinawa during the Korean War, we had air raid drills, and kids in my class took shelter in caves dug by the Japanese in World War II. I also lived in Roswell, New Mexico, but I never encountered any aliens as far as I know. I was the outstanding journalism graduate of A&M in 1964 and received a master of science in educational administration in 1979. When did you move to Bryan-College Station, and what brought you here? In 1975, I was

an editor for the Army and Air Force Exchange Service world headquarters in Dallas. I contacted an Aggie classmate at A&M and asked him to keep an eye out for any jobs in my field. The Aggie network worked, and I had an interview at A&M two weeks later. I’ve had that job nearly 41 years.

What do you do for a living? What is your favorite thing about your profession? I am senior editor for the Real Estate Center in Mays Business School at Texas A&M. I enjoy packaging our research results usable by different constituents. One of my jobs includes an internationally award-winning magazine sent to 150,000 Texas real estate licensees. Your joined our club in 1979, with Lion Billy G. Lay as your sponsor. What made you want to join? My dad was District Governor of 2-X3. My mom was Lioness of the year in Killeen. They added a room to house all their Lions plaques and awards. I was looking for a club to join when Lion Lay came by my house (wearing his Lions cap and pin) and asked if I would support Lions charities by buying some light bulbs. I did. And, I asked him how to get into Lionism. What other organizations or clubs are you involved with, and what appeals to you most about them? These days there are only two, the International Association of Business Communicators and A&M United Methodist Church. The former nurtures my professional life, and the latter my spiritual one. What would most people be surprised to learn about you? I have crossed the Pacific three times by ship, all thanks to the U.S. Army. The longest was a 42-day trip from Charleston, S.C., to Saigon, Vietnam. Another included a close encounter with a typhoon on a 14-day trip to Okinawa. The real celebrity in our family is my wife of 46 years, better known by her nickname “Keta.” She owned Keta’s Hallmark Shops for 21 years.
