    INTRODUCTION

Airbags are able to save the passengersfrom any serious injuries when crashoccurs.

The attraction of a soft pillow to landagainst in a crash must be very strong.

Airbags have been under developmentfor many years.

Statistics reveal that airbags reduce therisk of casualty in a DFC by 30%.

    Newtons second law of motion.

If objects arent restrained they willcontinue moving at the speed of the

moving car even if the car is stopped bya collision.

What all airbags need to do is to slow

down the passengers speed to zero.

    DEVELOPMENT

The first patent on an inflatable crashlanding device for airplanes was filedduring WORLD WAR-2

In 1980 first commercial airbagsappeared in automobiles.

Ever since 1988 it became a binding.

Efforts to adapt the airbag wasstranded due to prohibitive prices andtechnical hurdles.

    BAGS

Is made up of a thin nylon fabric, which isfolded into the steering wheel or dashboardor the seat or door.

    The powdery substance released

(cornstarch or talcum powder) is used tokeep the bags lubricated while theyre instorage.

    SENSOR

A device that tells the bag to inflate.

It works with the control module to

discriminate between crash and non- crashevents.

Inflation happens when there is a collisionforce equal to running into a brick wall at 16

    to 24 Km per hour.

    INFLATIONSYSTEM

    NaN3+KNO3=large amts. of NITROGENGAS.

Hot Blasts of the nitrogen inflate theairbag from its storage site up to

    322 Kmph.

    CONSTRUCTION OF AIR BAGS

Airbag are assemblies consisting ofthe airbag (made of Nylon), inflatormodules, sensor housing, electricalconnectors (Clock spring), airbagretainer and the cover.

    Inflator assembly

Control module activates airbagassembly- electric current is sent to thedetonator-ignition of sodium azide

    pallets-evolves nitrogen gas.

    WORKING

Air bags are designed to inflate in frontalimpacts in which the car strikes about 16 km/hr

After collision sensors sends an electric currentto igniter system

Electric current heats the filament which ignitesthe capsule which in turn ignites the gasgenerating pallets

The gas expands quickly and inflation of air bags

there by takes place, which break through aplastic cover in the steering wheel

Time taken for all these things about 0.1 sec.

    FUTURES OF AIRBAGS

    Smart systems Includes weight sensors

    Determine type occupant in seat.

    i.e. child or adult.

Infrared occupant detection Detect the distance of passenger from

    airbags

    Identify distance passenger from dash

    board Discriminate between human occupant

    and inanimate objects

Updated sensor Deploys seatbelt pretensioners faster to

    get benefit of airbags

    AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT

    Airbag inflation

Coming to rest in seat and deflation ofairbag

All these take in 30 milliseconds

In fact the entire inflation/deflationcycle takes less than sec.

    AIRBAG CHECKS

When we turn key look at the dash tofind airbag light for 7-10 sec & then goout

Problems occur when Light does not come on

If light does not go off after period

    If light comes during driving

    DISARMINGAIRBAGS

    Disconnect battery

    Wait 30sec.

    Remove airbag fuse

    Drop sound insulator panel

    Disconnect the circuits

    Thus the bag is disarmed

Keep the bag below 130degree Celsius

    CONCLUSIONS

Air bags are of greater importance intoday's vehicles since safety of humanlife is of prior importance

So far safe riding and for saving theprecious life the safety bags must beimplemented

    Lets hope every automobile

    manufacturer implements the same
