o Situation

o Poor air quality in Camden is the result of emissions from:o Transport (cars, taxis buses and coaches)o Buildings (gas from boilers)o Supply chain (LGVs and rigid HGVs)

o There is a great deal of work already being done by the council, the GLA, TfL and DEFRA but not all targets are being met

o We need the help of businesses

o Air quality and the business – current perceptions:o No perception of the problemo Know it’s a problem but not the extento Agree it’s an issue but what can I do?o Am fully aware of the extent of the problem

o Poor air quality has a significant impact on health

o What should we focus on to get the message across?

o Up to 10,000 deaths every year in London are attributable to poor air qualityo More people die in London every year as a result of poor air quality than

nationally from road traffic accidents o The effects of poor air quality are worse than passive smokingo The lung capacity of children in areas of poor air quality is reduced by at

least 5%o The economic cost of the health impact of poor air quality in the UK is

around £15 billion

Solutions

o Borough actions

o Award-winning green fleet which has large range of bio-methane and electric vehicles

o Gas consumption in Camden’s corporate buildings has reduced by 16% (2,053,805kgs) between 09/10 and 11/12

o Significant reductions in car use and increases in walking and cycling (225%) over the last ten years

o Expansion of car club membership reaching 6,700 with 265 car club spaces in the borough

o Delivery of an innovative electric vehicles project where local businesses were offered free two-week trials of electric vehicles

o High-level lobbying of the GLA and central government to put in place further measures to help us improve air quality

o Promotion of Walkit – urban walking route planner
