    AIR INDIA

    Air India is a state owned flag carrier and currently the oldest Airlineof the Republic of India.

    It is a part of the Indian government ownedNational Aviation Company of India Limited [NACIL]

    Its corporate office is located at the Air India Building at Narimanpoint in South Mumbai.

    It is the 16th largest Airline in Asia having two major domestic hubs atIndira Gandhi international Airport and Chhatrapati shvajiinternational airport

    Air India's worldwide network today covers 44 destinations byoperating services with its own aircraft

    Air India was founded byJ.R.D. TATAin July 1932 as Tata Airlines a divisionof Tata sons Ltd.

    He is considered as the father of civilAviation in India.

    1950s, due to deteriorating financialcondition of various airlines, theGovernment decided to nationalize airtransport.

    Air India Cargo

    The airline operates cargo flights to

    many destinations. A member of IATA, Air India carries all

    types of cargo including dangerousgoods and live animals, provided suchshipments are tendered accordingto IATA Dangerous GoodsRegulations and IATA Live AnimalsRegulations.

    Air India Express is the

    airline's lowcost subsidiarywhich was established in 2005 duringthe aviation boom in India.

    It operates scheduled passengerservices primarily to the Persian Gulfand South East Asia.

    Contract Labour is a significant and

    growing form of employment. This practiceis observed all over the world and has beenin operation since ages.

    Contract labour generally refers to Workers

    employed by or through an intermediaryon work of any establishment.

    These labours can be distinguishedfrom the direct workers in terms ofemployment, relationship with theprincipal employer and the method ofwage payment.

    It has a distinct way of working not

    found in any other classes of labourlike permanent, temporary, casual,badli etc

    Demanding better pay package andmedical benefits, nearly 300contractual security and commercialworkers of Air India boycotted work onand staged a demonstration at theIndira Gandhi International Airport in

    New Delhi.

    They have been working for past five

    years but paid meagrely.

    Also were denied any facility likemedical insurance and provident fundwhich are provided even to the lowerlevel employees of a private company.

    The employees also claimed that they

    were meted out step-motherlytreatment by the airline's permanentstaff.

    They are asked to work over timewithout providing drop facilities, and itwas the same with the femaleemployees too.

    There are about 200 security staff whohave the responsibility of checking the

    aircraft, baggages and also keep avigil on the aircraft and areassurrounding it so that no one make an

    unauthorised entry.

    They also handle baggage of severalInternational airlines like MalaysianAirlines, Sri Lankan airlines, PakistanInternational Airlines, and Air Arabia ,"

    SUGGESTIONS

    Development of a meaningful and rational IncentiveScheme that aligns with the Airlines strategicobjective

    Assisting the CIO in identifying the technologycomponents required to increase efficiency andbring about automation in the HR department.

    Work directly with the boards on employee issues

    Concern, respect, and caring attitude withinthe organization without any discrimination Necessary steps should be taken in order to make the

    contract staff permanent.
