3 St. Martha Church

In the first reading, Isaiah shares the Lord’s words, “I come to gather nations of every language… to the distant coastlands that have never heard of my fame, or seen my glory; and they shall proclaim my glory among the nations. They shall bring all your brothers and sisters from all the nations.”

There is something about Jesus that draws people – whole towns pour out to come to him. The Apostles dropped their nets and their boats and came to him. Crowds followed him without concern for their stomachs. Farmers left their equipment in the fields, and friends broke open a roof to reach him.

Even from the Cross and across the centuries people have come to Christ; they come to him today, too. And this prophecy – that the ends of the earth will hear the good news – is fulfilled. I can’t help but think about it up here in Alaska. For here it is fulfilled in our hearing – crazy, bearded disciples of Jesus are going up to the outer reaches of the earth to tell them the good news of Jesus, of his freeing way of life, of the extension of his grace, and invitation to become holy just as he is holy – inviting us into his Divine family.

It’s not easy.

Jesus tells us in the gospel – when asked if many people will be saved – “Many will attempt to enter, but will not be strong enough.”

Left to ourselves, we’re not strong enough to enter – but we’re not left to ourselves. The sign of missionaries among us is a living parable of the unseen Holy Spirit working among us, calling us into his life – calling us to greater discipleship.

Let’s not stay asleep, but wake up and realize that the time for discipleship and mission and living totally for the Kingdom of God, is now. It is right in front of us. In Christ,

(Parish picnic is Sept 8th. 12:30 Mass at Riverfront Park (weather permitting). Hope to see you guys there. Hope it’s been a good August. Please keep encouraging our retired priests (and GO VIKINGS!!!).

Respect Life "I feel that the greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion because it is a war against the child - a direct killing of the innocent child - murder by the mother herself. And if we accept that a mother can kill even her own child, how can we tell other people not to kill one another?" St. Theresa of Calcutta

Back to School: Where did this summer go? Here we are at the last week of August. Many prayers and blessings to our youth getting ready to start or return to college (many have already left) and to the younger ones returning to regular school in a week and a half. One thing that really distresses me is the disturbing trend of Catholic youth going to college and losing their faith, sometimes due to the influence of other kids or anti-Catholic or anti-religious professors, even at Catholic colleges. It actually almost happened to me 30 years ago. In addition to my best efforts to prepare the seniors that I directly minister to, the diocese and I have partnered The Newman Connection, an organization that partners with parishes and colleges nationwide to help connect freshmen with the Catholic ministry on their campus so they can reach out and invite them to get involved. Most non-Catholic colleges have either a Catholic Campus Ministry or Newman Center to help students continue to practice their faith. A table in the narthex will have cards that a parent or student can fill out and place in the collection box on the same table. If the cards run out, please write the student’s name, college, and city of college on any sheet of paper or email me the information and I will submit them. Upcoming Virtus sessions: Sat 8/31: 9:30AM Check virtus.org as I may add another date after this is published if there is more demand. Register at virtus.org. All new catechists must attend a session before CCD begins on 9/8.
