3St. Martha Church
Have you ever had a miracle happen in your life like the Canaanite woman in today’s Gospel? Our family
was recently overjoyed by the news of a relative’s miraculous healing of stage IV cancer! The prayers,
petitions, and sacrifices made in requesting that the Lord heal him were many. This was no small request, and
Our Lord, in His infinite mercy, brought about healing.
Today we heard the story of a woman bringing a desperate plea to Jesus to heal her daughter, who was
being attacked by a demon. What parent would do anything less for their child? At first blush, His response to
her might seem harsh, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” Jesus does not refuse the
woman, but coaxes out of her a response that shows her unwavering faith, that even the scraps from His table
were enough to heal her daughter, and she was right. Perhaps Jesus knew that the others around them
needed to hear what the humble Canaanite woman would say. The Nineteenth-Century commentator
Haydock explained, in his discussion of St. Chrysostom’s interpretation of this passage, “[Jesus] refused at
first to listen to her petition…to instruct us with what faith, humility, and perseverance we ought to pray.”
What are the things in your life that you are praying about? A sick loved one, a new job, healing for a
broken relationship, recovery from addiction? Don’t be afraid to ask for big things! As St. Pio said, “Pray,
hope, and don’t worry.” You can ask your favorite saints for their intercession as well. Some examples would
be Our Lady Undoer of Knots and St. Jude for difficult or hopeless causes, St. Dymphna for those suffering
with mental illness, St. Gerard for those hoping to conceive or expecting a baby. There are so many saints in
Heaven just waiting for us to ask for their intercession.
While praying about all our intentions, let’s not forget to pray together as a couple and as a family. Teach
the children to pray for their intentions, and ask them to pray for yours as well. As a very holy nun once told
me (my Kindergarten teacher), “Jesus hears the prayers of children first because they are so innocent.” When
a prayer is answered, share that too and say thank you! You can also make small sacrifices for a prayer
intention, like the sacrifices we make in Lent.
Don’t forget, miracles do happen, just like in today’s Gospel. Let’s pray with faith, humility, and
perseverance.
In Christ,
Bob and Jen Brogan

Choir Members Needed
The Traditional Choir, Harvest Folk Choir, and Youth Choir are seeking new members to join in the fall of this year.
Traditional Choir sings at the 5 pm Mass on Satur-day evening. We sing some contemporary 3 part choral music along with many of the Latin motets of years ago from the Saint Gregory Hymnal. Practice is on Tuesday’s from 6:30-8:30pm.
Harvest Folk Choir sings many of the well- known contemporary songs along with several of the “Prayer and Praise” gospel spirituals. They sing at the 10:30am Mass every Sunday. Practices are on Friday evenings from 8-9pm.
Youth Choir is in formation. We seek young peo-ple who sing in the school chorus. Our goal is to have a Youth Choir that sings in harmony. They currently sing at the 4pm Mass once or twice a month depending. Practices are on Sunday af-ternoons. We also welcome any young people who play instruments in the school band. Any-one interested in serving our parish community with their ability to sing or play instruments is asked to contact Lou in the music ministry office at 732-295-3630 Ext 34. ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY

RRELIGIOUS EDUCATION INFORMATION 732-295-3630 x 35
“Jesus often rebukes his disciples for having little faith. Their faith is little because it cowers before every obstacle. This woman’s faith is great be-cause it disregards every obstacle. He is the King of the Jews. She is a Gentile. She asks; he is silent. She asks two more times, he says no. She doesn’t care. She just keeps on coming. Notice that though she is insistent, she is nonetheless humble. She does not dispute Jesus’ ‘preferential option for the Jews.’ She does not arrogantly demand to be served first. She’ll settle for leftovers.” – Pope St. John Paul II
Faith at Home: What parent gives their child eve-rything they ask for? When we pray, are we only asking for things and then expect that God will give us what we want?
Level 1: We welcome our young parishioners who will begin Level 1 CCD this year! All children entering Level 1 and their parents are invited to attend a gathering at St. Martha’s this Saturday, August 26 at 10am in the all-purpose room.
CCD 2017-2018: Classes are available Levels 4, 5, 6 - Mon 5:45-7pm Levels 1-6 - Wed 4:30-5:45pm Levels 7 & 8 - Mon 4-5:30pm & Wed 6:30-8pm
CCD Schedules for 2017-2018 are available on the parish website. Mark your calendars, and print copies for coaches, teachers, etc. so they know when your child will be unavailable. Re-mind them that faith formation has eternal re-wards.
Spread the Gospel of Jesus! One catechist for Level 6 needed on Sundays, 9am to 10:15am. Classroom aides & subs also are needed. Email [email protected] or call 732-295-3630 Ext 35 for more information.

Award and Scholarship Recipients: Last week space did not allow me to profile all our recipi-ents, so here are the rest:
Knights of Columbus Deacon Jack Haney/Frank Cicalese Scholarship: Our Knights Council awards this to students entering their freshman year of Catholic high school. This year’s recipi-ents are: -Leonardo Chiarella, Matthew Voltaggio, Sa-mantha and Abigail Urstruch, who will all attend St. Rose High School, and Nicole Jimenez, who will attend Donovan Catholic.
St. Timothy Award: Many of you know of Matt To-maino from the benefit dinner we had last year to purchase a special racer for Matt to compete with his high school track team, as well as na-tional Paralympics. Matt has been one of the most active members of our youth ministry since his freshman year. Matt’s love of track led him to approach his coach 2 years ago, which led to him becoming Boro’s first wheelchair athlete. Adopted by the Monmouth Hawks basketball team, Matt has been an inspiration to the team. Matt gets his strength and perseverance by praying and talking to Jesus. On our recent Mis-sion Jersey mission trip, Matt was loved and ad-mired by all. He is quoted in this week’s Monitor story about the mission. A search for Matt in the Asbury Park Press and the Ocean Star will bring you to profiles both newspapers have done about Matt during this past year.
