DALLAS ARCHITECTS RECOGNIZED AT 2015 AIA DALLAS

BUILT DESIGN AWARDS

SEVEN PROJECTS LAUDED FOR DESIGN EXCELLENCE DALLASOctober8,2015TheDallasChapteroftheAmericanInstituteofArchitects(AIADallas)hasselectedsevendesignstoreceive2015BuiltDesignAwards,thehighestrecognitionofworksthatexemplifyexcellenceinbuiltprojectsbyDallasarchitects.Thisyearsrecipientswereselectedbyajurycomposedofnationallyrenownedarchitects,SharonJohnston,FAIA,founderandprincipalatJohnstonMarklee,ColinNeufeld,principalat5468796Architecture,andAminTadj,ofNADAAA.Thejurydeliberatedovermorethan60entriesandselectedthefinalrecipientsbasedoneachdesignsresponsetoitscultural,social,environmental,andcontextualchallenges.Theselectedprojectscommunicatecreativeresponsetoprogramandsiteconditionsacrosstypologiesandscale,saidHeathMay,2015AIADesignAwardschairandviceprincipalatHKS.Icongratulatetheawardrecipientsfordemonstratingthevalueofdesignandenhancingthequalityoflifethroughtheirpractice.Thewinners,whichwereannouncedatlasteveningsawardsceremonyatthePerotMuseumofNatureandScience,are:

ClearforkCampus,CunninghamArchitects,FortWorth,TX(29,100squarefeet):Anchoringthecornerofarapidlyexpandingmixedusedevelopmentwithintenmilesofthecitysurbancore,theClearforkCampusseekstointerpretthehistoryoftheranchlandthatonceoccupieditsenvirons.Conceivedasatightlykniturbancampgroundforitsinhabitants,theofficeandathleticcampusiscomposedofthreebuildingslinkedbyoutdoorspaces.

TheRichardsGroup,Perkins+Will,Dallas,TX(550,000squarefeet):LocatedintheWestVillagearea,the18storybuildingwasdesignedtoofferanofficeplanwithmaximumflexibilityandopennessbyusinganoffsetelevatorcoreinsteadofamoreconventionalcentercorelayout.Centraltothebuildingdesignisathreestorystairwellatriumthatencouragesphysicalactivityandallowsthecompanytocontinueitslongstandingtraditionofstairwellmeetings,thegatheringofsome700employeesforimportantannouncementsandintroductions.

NewParklandHospital,HDR+Corgan,Dallas,TX(1,900,000squarefeet):TheNewParklandHospitalpromotesexcellenceinclinicalcare,teaching,andresearchinatechnologicallyadvancedandeasilyaccessibleenvironmentwhichincludes862privatepatientbeds,27operatingrooms,and96privatenewbornICUbeds.ThemasterplanwasdevelopedtoaddressthediverseneedsofthepeoplewhoexperienceParklanddaily.

HouseofOlympicProportions,ShipleyArchitects,PortTownsend,WA(2,900squarefeet):ThesiteislocatedonthenortheasttipofWashingtonsOlympicPeninsulaoverlookingthenorthernwatersofPugetSound.Thelotishillsidewithfourexistingfirtreeswhichthehousewasdesignedaround.Thehouseisorientednotonlytothedramaticoceanviewbutalsotothesiteitselfwithwindowsframingthecanopiesandtrunksofthefirtrees.

CCR1Residence,Wernerfield,Trinidad,TX(4,690squarefeet):Thisresidenceislocated

onabeautifulwoodedsiteonCedarCreekReservoirandisintendedtoprovideanartfulandlowmaintenanceretreatthatwouldblendinwiththesite.Aslenderfloorplandesignallowedforthebuildingstobewovencarefullythroughthedenseforestofpinetreesthatwereplantedbytheowneronthepropertyasachild.

RichardJ.LeeElementarySchool,Stantec,Dallas,TX(95,633squarefeet):Thisnew,twostorylearningenvironmentisvisuallyopenandallowsflexibleuseofthespace.Thedesignprovidesavarietyofchoicesfortaskfocusedorcasualspaces,givingstudentsresponsibilityovertheirownlearning,whileteachersfacilitate.

SaintMichaelandAllAngelsColumbarium,MaxLevyArchitect,Dallas,TX(2,500squarefeet):Thecolumbariumtoaccommodatetheashesof1,000parishionersisframedbymatureoaks.Fourmasonrywallsharborthreecourts,witheachcourtacknowledginganattributeofthesky.
