This course will teach the important facts of ADA Standards when applied to
fabricated and cast iron access products. At the conclusion of the
course, the student will be better equipped to make informed specification
decisions as to infrastructure access coverings, gratings, hatches, etc., as
they apply to the ADA Standard.

Detectable Warning

11
Detectable warning surfaces warn visually impaired persons that they are approaching a street or crosswalk.
Increasing wheelchair accessibility by replacing curbs with ramps at crosswalks has had the unintended effect of eliminating the tactile cue (curb) that visually impaired persons relied upon to detect the end of the sidewalk.
To address this problem, the ADA has required that detectable warning systems that are also suitable for wheelchair and foot traffic be placed at curb ramps.
Considerations:Slip ResistanceWear Resistance Impact ResistantContrast
Product Durability – Wear ResistanceIndependent lab test demonstrates Cast Iron Warning Plates durability. Per ASTM C501-84 standards, an independent third
party laboratory test was conducted to determine the wear index values of Cast Iron Detectable Warning Plates versus composite plates. Test results indicate that Cast Iron Detectable Warning Plates are over 500 times more wear resistant than
composites. Additionally impact testing on Cast Iron Detectable Warning Plates proves they are more resilient to the demanding installation environment of these products.
Finish OptionsWe recommend specifying cast ironproducts in their natural state to minimize any unnecessary environmental impact.

When a “warning” becomes dangerous • It is up to the Engineer, state, or local municipality to
address performance, service life, and durability
– Specifying the right material is the best approach.
