“When I looked at Hizmet, I saw good people trying to do good things”

MLA Steve Young reflecting on the Hizmet Movement

Sayın Gülen’le hiç tanışmamış olsam da etkisinin sonuçlarını görebiliyorum. Hareket’in karar alma aşamasında uygulanarak hayata geçen prensipleri üzerinden tanıyabiliyorum onu. Nasıl davrandıkları, araştırma enstitülerinde hangi konulara eğilmeyi seçtikleri, çocukları desteklemek için kurumlar açmalarını hep bu prensipler temelinde hayata geçiyor. Sayın Gülen’le hiç tanışmadım ama tanışmayı isterdim. Harika bir insan olduğuna eminim. Hizmetkarı olduğu prensiplerin sonuçlarından son derece etkilendim

My introduction to Hizmet didn’t occur suddenly. I first met people from IDI, at the school in Edmonton, and also had an opportunity to go to Turkey and see some of the impact of the Hizmet Movement, and the people that were part of it. The introduction wasn’t through a paper or a book, rather it came through the experience of seeing the schools, hospitals and the people involved in the movement both in Turkey and in Edmonton. As we see in politics, sports teams and corporations, the leader or the head of an organization or group sets the culture and the tone for an organization. He defines and reaffirms what are the principles of that organization and how decisions are made. We don’t know what is going to happen in the future, but we know the principles that we will adhere to and use to make those decisions. And while I’ve never met Mr. Gülen, I can see the results of those principles, and I can certainly know him by those principles I’ve seen articulated and manifest through decisions that were made via the organization. Their principles show in how they conduct themselves, where they choose to put their efforts, in their research institutions and in establishing places to support children. So I’ve never met him, but I’m very impressed by the results of the principles that he is the steward of. When I looked at Hizmet, I saw good people trying to do good things. They are trying to reach out of their own comfort zone or their own communities, and help other communities.

“We are not races, but humans,”

“The atmosphere at the Ramada Plaza Calgary Airport banquet room was multi-cultural, tolerant and engaging -- understandably so, as it held the city’s 2nd Annual Interfaith Dinner. Malik Muradov, Executive Director of Intercultural Dialogue Institute Calgary introduced this year’s theme: Religious Perspectives on Racism. A short video on how each world religion has a version of The Golden Rule set the tone. After dinner, religious leaders from local Christian, Jewish and Muslim communities gave thought-provoking and respectful presentations of their faith’s philosophies and practices toward this timely topic. It was gratifying to hear three of Calgary’s prominent religions align themselves with the message that racism simply cannot be tolerated, not by Calgarian congregations, Canadians or the world at large. “We are not races, but peoples,” was the common message. A discussion followed with participants challenging presenters in a lively and respectful manner. Whether a speaker, questioner, or listener, all attendees left with their thoughts strengthened about the importance of eradicating the dissention, harm and violence racism causes if we are to continue evolving in our global world.”

is the common message

“Love is a Verb” is a documentary film by Terry Spencer Hesser documenting people living the idea of love is a verb through their work in “Hizmet“, a social movement inspired by Islamic scholar and teacher, Fethullah Gulen. The movie premiere screened at the Scotiabank Theatre Toronto, Carlton University Ottawa , Montreal, and other major cities in Canada.Love is a Verb documentary movie produced by Terry Spencer Hesser, an Emmy award winner.“Love is a Verb” is a documentary highlighting the life and work of Fethullah Gulen, an Islamic scholar from Turkey. Gulen inspired the “Hizmet” movement, named for the Turkish word for service. The Hizmet movement, often called the Gulen movement, focuses primarily on education, interfaith and intercultural dialogue and humanitarian outreach.

The need for interfaith dialogue is important now more than ever, according to panelists at a discussion following the Love is a Verb documentary screening last week hosted by Ottawa’s Intercultural Dialogue Institute. The documentary told the story of Fethullah Gulen, a Turkish Muslim who started the transnational Hizmet movement in the 1960s that promotes interfaith education. Since then, the Gulen movement has built schools, hospitals and launched media agencies in over 100 countries. The Carleton classroom was packed with about seventy attendees of all ages and faiths Feb. 5 to see the Love is a Verb screening about the Gulen movement and hear a panel featuring David Selzer, executive Archdeacon of the Diocese of Ottawa and Catherine Clifford, theology professor at Saint Paul University.Following the movie, Selzer and Clifford launched into discussion about the importance of interfaith dialogue and what this means for various faith communities. “It’s troubling that many think it’s more intelligent to be an atheist than a person of faith,” said Clifford, adding how

Intercultural Dialogue Institute screens Love is a Verbshe has seen new atheism promoted as propaganda in a secular society. Although she said it’s “easy to say religion can cause violence,” she emphasized the importance of interfaith peace, an aspect that she said needs to be discussed more. Selzer agreed it’s “important to be open-minded, regardless of beliefs.” When asked by a young attendee how to make a difference in the world, Selzer said the answer is evident from the Gulen movement and the essence of the film. “Don’t do it by yourself. The gift of relationship in a community is powerful,” he said, and judging from the turnout to the event, he said he must not be the only one who thinks this way. Vusal Babashov, President of Intercultural Dialogue Institute-Ottawa, said the Gulen movement has “inspired millions across the globe,” and said he hopes it continues with attendees leaving the event feeling motivated to initiative interfaith dialogue.

Many journalists working for the dissenting media groups, including Zaman newspaper and Samanyolu media group, were detained by police on December 14. The president of Samanyolu Media Group, Hidayet Karaca and the general editor of Zaman newspaper, Ekrem Dumanli were the most prominent of detained journalists in the operation of persecution of the media. As a reaction to this operation, Turkish citizens living in Canada protested the government’s action. On December 20, at the initiation of the Anatolian Heritage Federation, a group gathered in front of the Ontario Parliament building to condemn the coup against the Turkish media and to call for freedom of the press. The president of Anatolian Heritage Federation, Saadettin Ozcan made a statement to the press; “We as Turkish-Canadians, along with our Canadian supporters, condemn this operation that censor people’s right to access truthful information and silence the dissenting views of the media.”

On December 15, 2014, Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird issued the following statement regarding the Raids on Turkish Journalists and Media Outlets:“Canada is concerned by reports of recent government-ordered raids against media organizations in which journalists and other media representatives have been arrested in Turkey.Such actions are contrary to Turkey’s stated commitment to democratic values and respect for human rights and freedoms.Canada strongly believes that freedom of expression and a free and independent media are fundamental to any democracy. We call on the Turkish Government and President Erdogan to ensure that the Turkish people can exercise their democratic rights without fear of unfounded prosecution.”

Coup against Turkish media condemned at Queen’s Park

- Turkish media has been facing an unprecedented crackdown as the executives of Turkey’s two leading media outlets have been, since Sunday, in custody and are being questioned as part of a government-orchestrated police operation that has dealt a heavy blow to freedom of the press. Ekrem Dumanlı, editor-in-chief of Turkey’s highest-selling daily, Zaman, and Samanyolu Broadcasting Group General Manager Hidayet Karaca are still in custody at the İstanbul Police Department.

WHAT HAPPENED IN TURKEY?

26

Ekrem Dumanli is the general manager of Zaman Media Group that hosts Zaman Daily, the largest circulating Turkish language daily of Turkey with some 950.000 daily circulation, Cihan News Agency, Cihan TV Network, Aksiyon Newsweekly, Today’s Zaman – the largest circulating English daily of Turkey, Turkish Review – a semi-academic bi-monthly magazine, Irmak TV and Cihan Radio. Samanyolu Broadcasting Group, on the other hand, includes several TV and radio channels, among which are Samanyolu TV, Mehtap TV, Samanyolu Haber and Burc FM. Zaman Media Group and Samanyolu Broadcasting Group are unquestionably the largest opposition media groups in Turkey. Detainment of the top journalists in those groups should be read as an attempt to silence all the opposition against the ruling Justice and Development Party and the autocratic regime of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. This operation started shortly after Parliament passed a law that enabled prosecutors to detain people based on “reasonable suspicion.” The law was approved by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Friday and is approved for the first time. The term “reasonable suspicion” was used in the detainment orders the prosecutors took from Istanbul court. The use of such a pretext for detainment or arrest of media personal is unacceptable by international standards. Since two major corruption investigations

were launched in December of last year, which implicated government ministers and Erdoğan’s inner circle, Erdoğan has declared a “war” against the Hizmet movement, and Fethullah Gulen, the founder of the movement, accusing Hizmet of being behind the corruption investigations. It is believed largely that the current operation against Zaman Media Group and Samanyolu Broadcasting Group is a revenge operation made on the anniversary of last year’s corruption and graft investigations. It is most probable that detainment and arrest of journalists will continue on in stages until the end of the year. An original leak from Erdogan’s inner circles revealed that about 150 journalists were to be arrested. In a joint statement released on Sunday, Federica Mogherini, the EU high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, and Johannes Hahn, commissioner for European neighborhood policy and enlargement negotiations, said the crackdown on Zaman and other media outlets is an “unacceptable attack” against the freedom of the press. “This operation denies the European values and standards Turkey aspires to be part of and which are the core of reinforced relations,” they said. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan rejected criticism from the European Union over a police operation targeting journalists and others on Sunday, saying on Monday that Turkey will deal with its own problems and telling the EU to “mind its own business.”

ISIS Cruelty Deserves Our Strongest Condemnation As a practicing Muslim deeply

influenced by the tenets of my faith, I strongly condemn the brutal atrocities of the ISIS

terrorist group. Their actions are a disgrace to the faith they proclaim and are crimes

against humanity. Religion provides a foundation upon which to establish peace, human

rights, freedoms and the rule of law. Any interpretations to the contrary, including the

abuse of religion to fuel conflicts, are simply wrong and deceitful.

ISIS is not the first group to use religious rhetoric to mask its cruelty – Al Qaeda did

so 13 years ago and Boko Haram more recently. What they all have in common is

a totalitarian mentality that denies human beings their dignity. Any form of violence

against innocent civilians or persecution of minorities contradicts the principles of

the Qur’an and the tradition of our Prophet (upon whom be peace and blessings).

ISIS members are either completely ignorant about the faith they proclaim, or their

actions are designed to serve individual interests or those of their political masters.

Regardless, their actions represent those of a terrorist group and, as such, they should

be brought to justice and compelled to answer for their horrific crimes. I send my

heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. May God give them strength,

patience and perseverance, and alleviate their suffering. I also pray for the immediate

and safe release of hostages and ask God, the Merciful, to lead us all toward mutual

respect and peace. I invite everyone around the world to join me in these prayers.

Fethullah Gulen’s Message published in National Post:

Anatolian Heritage Federation Deplores Paris ShootingsAnatolian Heritage Federation condemns in the strongest terms the terrorist attack on French magazine Charlie Hebdo. Such horrific actions represent an assault on democratic values and can never be justified no matter the underlying reason. Even against insults, the befitting response must be legal and civil. Our thoughts are with the people of France and our prayers with the families of the deceased and injured. We must all honor the victims by hardening our commitment to spreading peace, tolerance and mutual respect.
