Viterra’s business drives virtualization strategy evolution The success of Viterra’s business relies largely on the ability of its employees to have fast and consistent access to files and applications residing on its network. As the company’s network grew to support nearly 4,000 users, it began to experience issues related to corrupt profiles, logon times and general system performance. Viterra was using a terminal server environment with roaming profiles, which could no longer keep up with the demands of the company’s user base. Users were experiencing slowdowns or even frozen sessions during periods of peak load. In addition, roaming profiles often became bloated, reducing performance and delaying logon times. All of these issues were adversely impacting user productivity. More recently, Viterra partnered with Infosys for an upgrade and optimization of the AppSense solution in order to leverage the advanced features that are available in the latest version of AppSense DesktopNow. AppSense also helped Viterra clean up their environment by eliminating logon scripts, group policies and batch files that had accumulated over the years and were affecting the system performance. For example, AppSense simplified the mapping and un-mapping of drives and network file shares, removing the need for numerous scripts and batch files. AppSense Environment Manager was a good fit to manage Viterra’s combination of users, applications and data across its enterprise desktop environment, since the solution provides precise user control with a powerful user-based policy and personalization engine. Viterra uses AppSense to deliver user and application settings on-demand to XenApp & XenDesktop based on the context of the user. “AppSense provides Viterra with the tools to address application configuration or customization issues. With Environment Manager one can typically find a solution to address application issues,” said Jerome Mogentale, Project Manager (IT ETS) with Viterra.

About Viterra Viterra is Canada’s grain industry leader, supported by the expertise of its people, a superior network of assets, and unrivalled connections to world markets. Headquartered in Regina, Saskatchewan, the company’s commitment to agriculture goes back nearly 100 years, partnering with farmers to market and move their crops to areas of need around the world.

To help address these challenges within its end user computing space and develop its future end user strategy, Viterra implemented Appsense in 2010 to ensure a seamless migration to XenApp by bringing user settings into a centralized management model that could then be applied to the XenApp environment to preserve user personalization.

Viterra also implemented AppSense Performance Manager to accelerate application launch times, improve desktop responsiveness and reduce infrastructure costs by supporting more users per server. The solution works by prioritizing resource access for business-critical applications, while limiting system resource availability to poorly behaving applications. As users move between different desktop and application delivery technologies, they continue to enjoy a seamless and responsive experience.

Another significant benefit Viterra realized with the AppSense upgrade was a significant reduction of user logon times from minutes to 35-45 seconds. “Before AppSense, and before the AppSense upgrade, there was a large demand from our team to manage our clients profile inventory,” added Mogentale.

“The majority of the problems that our clients faced have been remedied, and when new issues do arise the Appsense product suite provides greater flexibility and reduces time to repair.”

Infosys played a key role in fine-tuning of the AppSense solution for Viterra. Infosys’s strong experience and expertise in implementing powerful suite of desktop management tools like AppSense has helped Viterra achieve its strategic objectives in its End User computing domain. Today their client, Viterra, benefits from a well-managed, stable and high-performance end user solution delivered at a reasonable cost.

“AppSense is incredibly powerful and it really helped Viterra improve its end user experience” – Ulkesh Parikh, Lead Consultant, Infosys.
