Explanatory notes
Drainage layout and calculation
Satisfactory
The Geberit system, when designed in accordance with Geberit guidelines, meets the requirements of SANS 50256-2/ EN 12056-2 with respect to layout and calculation
Hydraulic performance-cross flow in critical fittings
Satisfactory, subject to reduced flow rates being adopted for opposing 100 mm nominal diameter branch pipes at Sovent fittings
Pipe flow rates recommended in SANS 10400-P (Table 13) and SANS 10252-2 (Table 14) are higher in some cases than those specified in SANS 50256-2 (Tables 4 and 7) [the comparison being made after the conversion of fixture units to flow rates]. For designs, based on SANS 10252-2, which include opposing branch pipes having a nominal diameter of 100 mm, a degree of cross flow will occur. For this reason branch pipe/connection flow rates for 100 mm diameter opposing branch pipes for the ball and Sovent branch fittings must be limited to the maximum permitted pipe flow rates specified in SANS 52056-2/EN 12056-2
Hydraulic performance-Sovent branch fitting’s stack flow capacity
Satisfactory The use of Sovent branch fittings in stacks allows the design capacity of 110 mm primary ventilated stacks to be increased to 7.6 litres per second without the need for additional ventilation, provided that the design is in accordance with Geberit’s recommendations that include:
a Sovent fitting being installed at each floor above ground level (even if no appliances are connected)
a pressure relief line being installed at the bottom of the stack
fixtures at the bottom of the stack must be connected to the pressure relief vent and not to the Sovent stack
Hydraulic performance-offsets in wet portions of discharge stacks
Satisfactory The recommendations made by Geberit with respect to stack offsets are acceptable. However, offsets for other stack types must comply with the requirements of SANS 52056-2/EN 12056-2, which are similar to those specified in SANS 10252-2
SANS 52056-2 /EN 12056-2: Gravity drainage systems inside buildings – Sanitary pipework, layout and calculation
SANS 10252-2: Water supply and drainage of buildings – Drainage installations for buildings.
Agrément Certificate 2011/392: Geberit soil and waste drainage system Page 9 of 33
Table 2: Performance (continued)
Adequacy and provision for pipe expansion and contraction
Satisfactory The recommendations made by Geberit with respect to accommodating pipe expansion and contraction must be adhered to
Embedment of pipework in concrete
Satisfactory
The performance of portions of the Geberit system embedded in concrete will be satisfactory provided that:
sufficient anchoring is provided to prevent relative movement between pipe-work and concrete, as per Geberit’s guidelines
the expansion and contraction forces created by thermal movement are accommodated by the concrete
non-tension resistant couplings such as ring seal and expansion socket couplings are not used
special attention is given to the provision of access to the drainage system as a whole, in accordance with the guidelines as specified in Clause DN4 of SANS 52056-2/EN 12056-2. Access is required to enable effective cleaning and testing of the system, especially any portion permanently embedded in concrete
the proposed embedded portion of the drainage system is tested for water ingress in the assembly shop when pre-assembled or in situ when joints are made on site (in situ testing to be carried out prior to concrete embedment)
Rigid installation and design of fixings
Satisfactory The forces exerted on pipe supports, anchors and the structure by rigid installations must be accommodated. Rigid fixings are not considered suitable for pipes over 160 mm in diameter. Guidance on the load exerted by rigidly installed pipe-work on fixings is available from Geberit or could be calculated by a competent person
Agrément Certificate 2011/392: Geberit soil and waste drainage system Page 10 of 33
Strength of components and durability
Satisfactory Pipe fittings, adaptors, Sovent branch fittings and access pipes meet the requirements of SANS 8770/ISO 8770.
HDPE will not be adversely affected by chemicals typically encountered in domestic, commercial and public buildings. HDPE’s performance will not be adversely affected by exposure to ultra-violet light. The Geberit system must not be used where effluent temperatures consistently exceed 80°C.
It is recommended that in commercial buildings, exposed pipe-work be protected from impacts from vehicles, fork-lift trucks, etc.
Adequacy and provision of joints
Satisfactory Joints will remain watertight under normal drainage conditions. It is recommended that joints be made under controlled conditions in accordance with Geberit’s recommendations and by persons trained in making joints, especially butt welds and electro-fusion joints
Ease of installation
Satisfactory Installation of the systems will be achieved easily provided that procedures prescribed by Geberit are strictly adhered to
Ease of maintenance
Satisfactory Provided access to pipes and fittings is provided in accordance with the requirements of SANS 52056-2/EN 12056-2, blockages will be readily cleared. In the event of alterations or maintenance, sections of pipe-work can be readily removed and replaced
Performance in fire
Satisfactory As is the case with most other plastics, Geberit HDPE pipes and fittings are combustible and may ignite and burn when exposed to fire.
An effective fire damper must be installed when pipe-work penetrates a fire division or compartment

PART 3: TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
General description
The Geberit Above Ground Soil and Waste Drainage System
incorporates pipes, adaptors and fittings, including the Geberit Solvent
manufactured from high-density polyethylene (HDPE). The system is
used for the conveyance of sewerage that is below 80 °C, from domestic,
commercial and public buildings.
Pipe and fitting manufacture
Pipes, adaptors and fittings are manufactured from black PE80 HDPE to
meet the requirements of SANS 8770: 2008.
Pipes are extruded from batch- mixed raw materials in diameters
varying from 32 to 315 mm. Following extrusion pipes are tempered by
being stored for a period in a hot water bath. Pipes are supplied in
standard lengths of 5 m. Fittings and adaptors are injection moulded or
produced by welding pipe sections together, while Geberit Sovent
fittings are blow moulded.
The Geberit range of pipes and available pressure classes are indicated
in Tables 1 and 2, respectively, while the Geberit range of fittings are
indicated in Table 3.

Geberit Sovent branch fitting
Delivery and site handling
No special precautions are needed when delivering pipes and fittings,
however, pipes should be stored in stacks not more than 1 m-high and
away from heat sources to avoid distortion.
Design of drainage systems
Systems are to be designed in accordance with the requirements of
SANS 10400–P Drainage and SANS 10252-2: single stack systems or
unvented one-pipe systems (with cognisance being taken of reduced
maximum flow rates in branch pipes as per SANS 52056-2/EN 12056-2:
single discharge stack with unvented discharge branches) applicable to
100 mm diameter opposing branch pipes at ball fittings and Sovent
fittings.
A major element of the Geberit system is the Sovent branch fitting,
which is designed for a primary ventilated stack/single stack in a
configuration as shown in Figures 1 and 2 below.
SANS 10252-2 Water supply and drainage of buildings – Drainage installations for buildings.

Figure 2: Typical installation with Sovent fittings on a single stack system feeding into a sewer drain/ground pipe on the bottom left side
Offsets in wet portions of a discharge stack should be avoided, however,
if unavoidable, recommended details are given in the figures below, i.e.
for offsets smaller than 1 m - Figure 3(a) - and for offsets larger than 1m
Agrément Certificate 2011/392: Geberit soil and waste drainage system Page 14 of 33
- Figure 3 (b). Where offsets for other stack types are proposed, the
requirements of SANS 52056-2 are complied with.
(a) (b)
Figure 3: Geberit’s guidelines for offsets in a Sovent stack
The average linear expansion/contraction coefficient applicable to
Geberit HDPE pipework is 0.2 mm/m/°C, as such drainage systems must
be designed for movements or forces associated with temperature
changes.
Pipes may be supported on rigid fixings designed to carry expansion
forces, however, rigid fixings are not considered suitable for pipes over
160 mm in diameter.
Two methods are recommended to accommodate thermal expansion
and contraction of pipe-work: the deflection leg and the expansion
socket methods, as shown in Figures 4, 5(a) and 5(b) below. Detailed
instructions are provided in Geberit’s installation manuals.

Figure 5(b): The expansion socket method to deal with pipe
expansion. Marking on the socket ensures correct insertion
depth i.e. insertion depth according to temperature at the time
of installation
Expansion sockets can accommodate movement caused as a result of a
temperature difference of 80°C over a length of 6 m. Expansion sockets
must be used in conjunction with rigid fixings.
Geberit pipes are often embedded in concrete as would be the case
when cast into floor slabs as indicated below.
Figure 6: An example of a Geberit HDPE drainage system to be embedded in a concrete floor before concrete casting. (Pipes are
installed, (fixed on grade) after the installation of bottom reinforcement. The embedded portions of the drainage system are
tested for water ingress in the assembly shop or, where joints are to be made on site, in-situ prior to placing of concrete.)
Agrément Certificate 2011/392: Geberit soil and waste drainage system Page 17 of 33
As adhesion between the concrete and the surface of pipes is
inadequate to prevent pipe movement due to temperature change,
shear stress development at branch fittings could result in damage. It is,
therefore, a requirement that pipe-work be anchored on each side of
fittings to the encasing concrete. Such anchorage can be effected by
means of electro-welded sleeves or bushes. Expansion or contraction
forces resulting from such anchorage must be accommodated by the
concrete. Ring seal and expansion socket couplings must not be used on
pipe-work embedded in concrete.
Special attention is given to providing access to the drainage system as a
whole (including sections of the system permanently embedded in
concrete) in accordance with the guidelines specified in Clause ND 4 of
SANS 52056-2/EN 12056-2, to enable the effective cleaning and testing
of the system.
Technical support and training
Technical support is available from Geberit’s offices in South Africa while
product guides and installation manuals may be down-loaded from
Geberit’s websites. Training is also provided by Geberit’s staff on system
installation and joining procedures.
Installation
Various options are available for pipe and fitting joining. The type of
joint specified will depend on:
the method of installation;
space available to make the joint and to accommodate other
services;
whether or not the joint is subject to tensile forces.
As HDPE melts at approximately 220°C, welding techniques such as butt
welding and electro-fusion/electro-welding may be successfully carried
out. Welding tools and training are available from Geberit.

Joint types and applicable applications are indicated in Figures 8 and 9
below:
Figure 7: Geberit joint types
Figure 8: Applications of Geberit joint types
Maintenance
HDPE pipes and fittings do not require to be protected from solar
radiation; painting of pipes and fittings is not recommended.
Blockages may be readily cleared using standard pipes cleaning
equipment. If necessary, sections of pipe can be readily removed and
replaced.
