Summer is upon us and the temperatures attest to that fact. I’m writing this from the Inner Harbor in Baltimore where the temperature is in the low 90’s with a heat index of 100. Like most families, summer is the time when the whole clan comes together at least once. With that thought in mind, the last full week in April is the time the AgFirst Retiree family historically comes together. Our 2017 Retiree Conference in Gettysburg Pennsylvania was delightful as we all enjoyed the enduring bond of Farm Credit employees. Touring the battlefield at Gettysburg was such a moving experience in that it reminds us of what happens when you don’t resolve differences through thoughtful compromise. Given the political rhetoric and divide currently existing in America, Gettysburg is a painful reminder of what we see being replicated across the globe. As the speaker so vividly brought to our attention, the Gettysburg experience is an extraordinary tool for teaching diplomacy as well as military tactics. So, thanks to Alton Thornton for his leadership in the past year; for all the retirees who volunteer, especially Beverly Ratcliff, Joan Edwards, and Marie Stiles, for their time and energy to ensure all the administrative tasks are managed; for Scott Owens and Jay Rush who secured the 2017 site and arranged the program; and a hearty thank you for all the retirees who participated in the 2017 Conference. We are also grateful to AgChoice, MidAtlantic, and AgFirst for their financial support of the 2017 AgFirst Retiree Conference. As we shift our attention to the 2018 Retiree Conference, the venue moves to the picturesque landscape of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the city of Asheville, North Carolina. The Biltmore House is the premier attraction in Asheville but you have numerous other sites and activities such as the NC Arboretum, hiking and canoeing, Folk Art Center, Pinball Museum, Western NC Farmers Market, Craggy Gardens, Asheville’s Botanical Gardens, and numerous stores, breweries and restaurants in the downtown area. The Conference will be held at the Doubletree by Hilton Asheville-Biltmore located at 115 Hendersonville Road. We have negotiated a base room rate of $135 but with taxes it will be around $150. We will provide more details later regarding registration. All the details will be included in February’s Newsletter. The 2018 Conference will follow the same format as in past years with a reception the evening of April 23rd, a half day program in the morning and a banquet the evening of April 24th, and checkout on Wednesday, the 25th. We encourage you to attend and to invite other retirees to join you…especially those who haven’t been participating and those who have recently retired. To follow are some excellent reasons to attend: You get to renew and deepen long-term relationships; It provides a break from the routine; You will get to enjoy the culture of western North Carolina and see the changes in Asheville since your last visit; and The greater the participation the more leverage we have with the hotel when negotiating the room rates and food and beverage budget. I encourage you to keep in touch with retirees in yourarea and serve as a support group for each other. Aformer colleague recently sent me an essay on“friends.” The piece pointed out that your childrengrow up and leave home, your parents pass on, butgood friends remain for a lifetime. Life is short andtrusted friends make it richer and more satisfying.Even when we haven’t seen each other in a while, weeffortlessly pick up where we last left off.

Looking forward to seeing you in Asheville in April2018 or perhaps sooner if the Good Lord permits.Let’s make sure that the ingathering of retirees is aplanned event and not the result of the untimelypassing of one of our colleagues. May God bless andkeep you until we meet again.

service award to Lottie Matthews (longtime treasurer)and approved the payment of one night’s stay for thesleeping rooms of the secretary, treasurer and newslettereditor (Ratcliff, Edwards and Stiles) and this had not beenincluded in the minutes. Old Business: Membership – The board discussed membership and therecruitment of new retirees. It was discussed that all newretirees receive a letter in their retirement packet fromAgFirst with information on the organization. Also, whenthe winter newsletter is mailed, it is sent to all newretirees from the previous year; and periodically the mail‐ings go to previous year’s retirees who have not joined. The board members were encouraged to invite retireesfrom their area.

New Business: Website – It was brought to the attention of the boardthat Donna Camacho, of AgFirst FCB, has been our web‐site coordinator for many years and is retiring. Retiree Cost of Living Adjustment – It was noted thatsome retirees have approached board members asking ifor when a COL – cost of living adjustment ‐ could orwould be considered in the future. Some of theseretirees have been retired for years and with the cost ofliving continually increasing, a COL would be very helpful.Members of the board were unfamiliar with theinformation given retirees at the time these adjustmentswere discontinued.
