Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address

By Abraham Lincoln

President Abraham Lincoln gave his most famous speech, the Gettysburg Address, on November 19, 1863. At that time, the U.S. was in the middle of the Civil War. Lincoln gave the speech at the dedication of a cemetery for the soldiers who had died during the Battle of Gettysburg. Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth, upon this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation, so conceived, and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met here on a great battle field of that war. We are now have come to dedicate a portion of it as the a final resting place of for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. But in a larger sense we can not dedicate—we can not consecrate—we can not hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember, what we say here, but can never forget what they did here. It is for us, the living, rather to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they have, thus far, so nobly carried on. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us—that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to the that cause for which they here gave gave the last full measure of devotion—that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain; that this nation shall have a new birth of freedom; and that this government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

1. If “score” means 20 years, how many years was President Lincoln speaking of when he said, “Four

score and seven years ago...”?

2. If he gave the speech in 1863, what exact year was he referring to when he said, “Four score and

seven years ago...”? What important event happened in the United States that year?

3. What does “proposition" mean in this phrase: “dedicated to the proposition that all men are

created equal"?

A. the Constitution B. an invitation C. an idea D. people

4. What does President Lincoln mean by “the last full measure of devotion“ when he said, “they here

gave the last full measure of devotion”?

In chapter six Winston mentions that he had been married and probably ... Paul E. Tippens.

Chapters 5 and 6

37. There is a shortage of razor blades in Oceania. In a previous chapter we learned that many of the citizens were walking around without shoes and that they didn't earn enough money to buy pajamas. Sometimes there is a shortage of shoelaces or buttons. What does this simple lack suggest about BB's interest in the emotional wellbeing of his people?

38. During the conversation Syme talks about the hanging nonchalantly and even calls it "a good hanging". He then states his preference of what he enjoys seeing: kicking, bright blue tongue sticking out. Winston describes Syme's attitude as being venomously orthodox. What did he mean?

39. Describe the food. In which type of institution would you find this type of food? Is this a coincidence or is the author trying to help the reader understand the gravity of the situation in Oceania?

40. Syme talks about destroying words and describes it as a beautiful thing, however he admits that the whole aim of Newspeak was to narrow the range of thought. What objective were they trying to fulfill by doing this?

41. Syme says "the proles (the working class) are not human beings." Mention one recent event that proves that many governments still have a slightly modified version of this belief.

42. Explain this phrase: "Orthodoxy means not thinking-- not needing to think. Orthodoxy is unconsciousness."

43. According to Winston, Syme would be vaporized because there was something subtly wrong with him. What did Winston believe Syme lacked?

44. About a quarter of each person's salary had to be "voluntarily" donated. State your opinion about this. 45. Winston's neighbor, father of the wild boy and girl we met in a previous chapter, proudly tells a story

of how is seven-year-old daughter followed a man and turned him over to the patrols because she identified him as a spy. What made the little girl come to that conclusion?

46. The telescreen announced that workers were out on the street celebrating their "new, happy life". It was even mentioned that there had been a demonstration thanking BB for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. The day before it had been announced that the ration had been reduced to twenty grams a week. But many of the listeners swallowed the fake news. Give one example of how this is still happening today.

47. After describing the canteen, Winston realizes always in your stomach and in your skin there was a sort of protest, a feeling that you had been cheated of something that you had a right to. What could he be referring to?

48. Winston asks a poignant question: why would one feel it to be intolerable unless one had some sort of ancestral memory that things had once been different? If he had never known better, would he have felt dissatisfied with the current situation?

49. Define facecrime. 50. Parsons seems very proud of the criminal activities of his two children. Towards the end of chapter 5

he tells another story of what his children did. What do you think? Were these children really expressing superior spying skills or are they simply out of control sociopaths?

51. In chapter six Winston mentions that he had been married and probably still was. What became of his wife?

52. Then he goes on to talk about prostitution. Ironically promiscuity between party members was unforgivable but it was accepted if it involved the women of a submerged and despised class. What are your thoughts about this?

53. Describe how the party viewed marriage. 54. The party tried to kill the sex instinct by making it something dirty and party members saw it only as a

duty in order to have babies. What do you think was the effect of this?

INTERMEDIATE: Teacher: Bernarr Thompson Email: [email protected] Read the following passage and answer the questions below:
