News-2-You, a subscription- based service, provides a weekly online newspaper composed of text and pictures, as well as interactive Web-Based games, Software-supported activities, and other curricular materials.

Designed especially for beginning readers and learners with special needs, this suite of resources gives individuals access to information about current events.


The relevance of the newspaper topics, which are further supported by online games and hands-on activities, draw young people in and accelerate their learning.



INSTRUCTIONAL APPROACH


• Enables educators to build learning experiences around current events using a combination of printed materials, hands-on activities, and multi-media tools.

• The content and learning process can be simple or more sophisticated.

• Educators have the option of adapting the materials to address academic standards.

• Especially effective for special needs learners.



Considerations for Special Populations


• Materials and activities are universally designed to be accessible and meaningful to all learners.

• Materials and activities serve:– Individuals with special needs– Beginning readers– English Language Learners

• Multiple versions are available to meet the needs of the users. Including:– Four reading levels of the standard newspaper (simplified,

regular, higher, and advanced editions)– Spanish editions– Speaking editions



Planning and Preparation


• News-2-You is designed to be ready to use (although teachers may wish to build lesson plans around the content).

• Lesson plan templates are provided• Recommended Teacher Preparation:

– Preview the publication and online games in order to know what to expect and how to best facilitate use of these materials.

– Become familiar with the specific software tools before introducing any of the software-supported activities.



Standards Alignment


• News-2-You provides lesson plan templates that identify instructional targets for different subject areas and grade levels.

• Instructional targets reflect the core skills laid out in state standards.

• Progress monitoring charts for tracking student progress are provided.

lessons using News-2-You– Lesson plans are generic to the structured activities

that can be downloaded each week; however, the specifics of the lesson vary depending on topic, theme and vocabulary.
