• Problem• Hypothesis• Variables
• Independent• Dependent• Controlled
4. Endorsements
ObjectivesStudents will be able to:
– State the problem and hypothesis of a scientific investigation.
– Identify the variables and control of a scientific investigation.
PurposeStudents will be able to:
– Apply the knowledge gained to complete a science fair project.
Homework
• Work on the science fair project.
Purpose and Hypothesis• Problem
• Hypothesis• Variables
Materials and Methods of Procedure Results
ConclusionsReferences
Make Observations (Research)
Search for information about the topic of interest.
State Problem (Question)
What can be solved through investigation or experimentation.
Formulate a Hypothesis: Predict a possible answer
to the problem or question.
Example: If soil temperature increases, then the plant will grow taller.
Variables • Independent
– Condition that you will change during the experiment.
• Dependent– Condition that will change as a result
of changes of the independent variable (observations).
Controlled VariablesConditions that will stay the same during the experiment. You control to reduce error.
EndorsementSpecial permission only needed if you work with humans, microorganisms, animals, animal tissue or DNA.
Hint: check Dr. C site, “City Science Fair” link.
