We can be even stronger.

New York Life’s African American Community Empowerment Plan is an agent-led movement to help families build wealth. We provide financial tools and strategies that can assist with closing the wealth gap for the African American community.

The goal of the Empowerment Plan is to help generate $50 billion of life insurance protection within the African American community by insuring 200,000 individuals for at least $250,000 each. That protection will ultimately provide generally tax-free income to their families and heirs.

We’re a strong community. We are proud of our community’s successes. We have an opportunity to respond to some of today’s financial needs. We can support the growth and success of future generations.

• Higher academic achievement has translated into increases in household income. The average household wealth of African Americans has climbed 27% to $85,000.¹

• African Americans are expected to have a purchasing power of $1.3 trillion by the year 2017,2 but the homeownership rate was 43% in the second quarter of 2014, compared with 73% in the general market.3

• White families have received inheritances nearly 10 times larger than those of African American families.4

New York Life’s mission is to provide financial security and peace of mind. This is the foundation on which our effort to protect the future of the African American community is built.

Create a personal financial strategy—in other words, your own empowerment plan.

Understand some of the living benefits of permanent life insurance—like tax-free loans for college or accessing the cash value of your insurance policy for down payments for homes and other expenses.6

Become a wealth creator in your community.

6 Cash value is accessed through policy loans and partial surrenders of any paid-up additions. Loans accrue interest at the current variable loan interest rate. Loans and partial surrenders reduce the total policy cash value and total life insurance benefit by the amount of the unpaid loan plus accrued loan interest or the amount of the partial surrenders. Please see the contract for complete terms and conditions.

It starts with you.

Protect what you earn, own, and those you love. Plan for major life events.

Prioritize your financial goals. Pass on assets to the people and institutions you care about.

To build a financial foundation, the Empowerment Plan is based on four principles:

Imagine how this could help strengthen our community!

New York Life has a long history of hiring, training, and developing successful African American agents and managers. The company’s commitment to creating greater financial awareness among this proud community dates back to 1957, when  we hired one of the industry’s first  African American life insurance agents, Cirilo A. McSween.

Mr. McSween dedicated his life to strengthening his community. He was adamant about helping his clients create estates and leave legacies to financially empower the next generation, using life insurance as the foundation.

In addition to a 26-year, purpose-driven career with New York Life, Mr. McSween was the treasurer of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and a close confidant of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Today, our agents are embracing the legacy of the trailblazers who came before them. These professional men and women are leading a movement to help create billions of dollars of wealth for generations to come.
