‘EVENTIDINGS’ Issue No 016 SUMMER 2018
Wow, how quick does Christmas come around, we
only have 25 more sleeps as I write this report.
Once again we have a busy Christmas program,
with the Hostel resident’s dinner being held on
Wednesday 13th December, the Retirement
Village resident’s dinner on Thursday 14th
December and the week ending with the Stawell
Biz Christmas Parade on Friday 15th December.
Last year we won the “Best Float” in the Christmas
Parade so we are hoping to top that this year.
Everyone is welcome to participate. Our staff are
celebrating at the Stawell races on December 9th
and our Board Directors dinner was held on
Thursday, November 23rd, last week.
Our Annual General Meeting was held in October
and I especially wish to thank Darcy Crawford for
singing the National Anthem and Bonnie Mellor for
being our guest speaker. It is lovely to have young
people interested in Eventide and I know the
residents love to see young people around. Julie
Dunn has been appointed as Board Chair, with
Peter Barham appointed Vice Chair. I look forward
to working alongside both Julie and Peter over the
coming 12 months.
I wish to welcome Cathy Potter to the position of
Care & Lifestyle Manager and Diane Edchamag to
the position of Clinical Team Co-ordinator. While it
is sad to see Erica go, it is wonderful we had a
succession plan in place. I wish Cathy and Diana all
the best in their new positions and also Erica good
health & happiness in her retirement.
Eventide have had another very successful year, we
were honoured to win “Community Enterprise”
Award in the 2017 Neoen Grampians Pyrenees Busi-
ness Awards and also thrilled to be recognised at
the 2017 Centre for Participation Volunteering
Awards, receiving the Local Government Award for
the Northern Grampians Shire. We are forever
grateful to our staff and volunteers, taking the time
to make a difference to the lives of our residents. I
recognize it is our people that make Eventide a
wonderful organization to both live and work in.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish all
residents, staff and volunteers a very Merry Christ-
mas and a Safe and Happy New Year and thank you
all for your contribution throughout the year. I hope
you get to spend time with family and loved ones
and enjoy the festive season.
Will catch you in 2018.

A lot has been happening here at Eventides over the last
few months.
Our Annual General Meeting was held in early October,
the meeting was well attended by residents, volunteers,
staff and members of the community.
We had the sweet treat of live music drawing a crowd of
close to 100 people to be entertained by musical duo
‘Leo & Sandra’. A wonderful afternoon had by all that
attended the event. The Glyn Cashin Hall was also filled
with fashions, fascinators and hats for our annual ‘Oaks
Day’ celebrations. A great afternoon of nibbles, drinks and
race day fun.
We farewelled Care & Lifestyle Manager Erica Bostock
and wish Erica all the best in her well-earned retirement.
Eventide Homes are once again participating with an
entry in this years ‘Christmas Street Parade’. We
encourage & welcome interested Independent Living Unit
residents to come along and join in the fun and walk with

Our Annual General Meeting was held on Wednesday evening in the Glyn Cashin Hall.
The meeting was well attended by residents, volunteers, staff and members of the community.
The meeting commenced with a welcome address by Chief Executive Officer Sue Blakey, followed by
Darcy Crawford singing our National Anthem. Our Board of Governance Chair Mr Reg Smith conduct-
ed proceedings for the evening.
Chief Executive Officer Sue Blakey reported “It has been a year we have worked on strengthening
the Governance of the Organisation. We have introduced “TAGS” (The Australian Governance Sys-
tem) and are currently working on implementing new governance policies and procedures. Board
directors are enthusiastically embracing this change.”
Eventide has continued to focus on Retirement Living and Residential Aged Care and we are also
looking at expanding our accommodation options in the future.

Each newsletter edition we
introduce you to one of the many
brilliant staff members we have working at
Eventide Homes. There are a broad range
of roles across the organisation and every
staff member does an amazing job.
This edition we meet new Care & Lifestyle
Manager Catherine Potter.
As you are all aware, Catherine (or Cathy as
we all know her by) previously worked as the
Clinical Care Co-ordinator which has helped
her prepare for this new and exciting role.
As Cathy already has a great relationship
with the residents, relatives and staff, the
transition to Care and Lifestyle Manager
has been smooth for both Cathy and the
residents as there has not been a huge
change in the structure of staff.
Cathy was fortunate enough to work along-
side recently retired Erica Bostock.
Erica was a fantastic mentor and she was
able to teach Cathy the ropes.
The philosophy we share is to grow your
own rather than have somebody come from
the outside, especially in a small community
it is important to maintain that sense of
community.
‘To lead a great team
forward into the future’
Diana Edchamag who has been working at
Eventide as a Registered Nurse will take over
Cathy’s previous role as Clinical Care Co-
Ordinator. Cathy looks forward to working
with Dianna and watching her blossom in
this position.
Cathy is excited about her new role and
looks forward to the challenges ahead.
Staff Profile
Catherine Potter - Care & Lifestyle Manager
A well planned menu incorporating meal fortification and efficient weight monitoring are
vital to residents here at Eventide Homes.
Food Services Supervisor Andrea Monaghan reports that Menu planning to include natural meal
fortification requires careful planning and consideration. Food Fortification involves adding nutrients,
particularly energy (kilojoules) and protein to meals to maximise the nutritional value. This can provide
the nutrition the residents need with smaller portions of food, which they are more easily able to eat.
Basically, fortification ensures every mouthful counts, minimising the reliance of high protein energy
drinks and supplements throughout each day.
Thanks to our incredible Food Services team, this is an area that Eventide excels in. Under careful guid-
ance and management from Andrea our menus are regularly monitored, reviewed and assessed to see
what is working and what is not and Andrea makes changes to each resident’s menu accordingly.
Stawell Regional Health Dietitian Nadia Maxwell and Food Services Supervisor Shirley Hetherington re-
cently visited Andrea to go through the expansive collection of meals and recipes included in our menu
here at Eventide Homes. They were very impressed with our natural food fortification providing adequate
nutrition and delicious food our residents here at Eventide.
‘The Perfect Menu’
‘Operation Christmas Child’
Residents have once again been busy making gifts and
packing shoeboxes for impoverished children overseas.
The initiative is Operation Christmas Child which seeks
to bring great happiness to children in desperate need
across the world through gift-filled shoeboxes.
Everybody involved has enjoyed knitting toys and gifts
for the children and packing them along with necessary
everyday items as well.
The shoeboxes packed will very likely be the first gift
these children have ever received. Pictured above:

‘Best Community
Social Enterprise’ Award
Eventide Homes were thrilled to be awarded the “Best Community /
Social Enterprise” sponsored by Northern Grampians Shire Council at
this years 2017 Neoen Grampians Pyrenees Business Awards. The
awards are shared and supported by three councils - Ararat Rural City,
Northern Grampians, and Pyrenees.
Well done to our Board of Governance Directors, Management and
Staff on this fantastic achievement.
Harold Blake enjoys utilising all that Eventide
Homes offers. Being an active resident in one
of Eventide Homes Independent Living
Cottages, Harold makes use of the onsite
Exercise Equipment. He incorporates two 20
minute sessions of cycling on the Exercise
Bike each and every morning and afternoon.
which equates to 21kms of cycling each day.
Harold rarely misses a session, which
indisputably benefits his health, fitness and
general well-being.
‘Cycling for Health & Fitness’
It only take two to four hours a week to achieve a general Improvement to health. Cycling is: • Low impact – it causes less strain and injuries than most
other forms of exercise. • A good muscle workout – cycling uses all of the major
muscle groups as you pedal. • Easy – unlike some other sports, cycling does not require
high levels of physical skill. Most people know how to ride a bike and, once you learn, you don’t forget.
• Good for strength and stamina – cycling increases stami-
na, strength and aerobic fitness.
• As intense as you want – cycling can be done at very low intensity to begin with, if recovering from injury or illness, but can be built up to a demanding physical workout.
• A fun way to get fit – the adventure and buzz you get
from coasting down hills and being outdoors means you are more likely to continue to cycle regularly, compared to other physical activities that keep you indoors or re-quire special times or places.
• Time-efficient – as a mode of transport, cycling replaces
sedentary (sitting) time spent driving motor vehicles or using trams, trains or buses with healthy exercise. Source: https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/health/healthyliving/ cycling-health-benefits
