Structure The Mk3 Jazz (known as Fit in other markets) has been built on an extensively re-engineered platform to allow for other body derivatives to be built - saloon, estate, mini-van and a crossover. The new platform modularity allows for 3 wheelbases and 2 different engine compartments with unified mountings for all possible powertrains. Emissions reductions and efficiency requirements have led to the vehicle being ≈ 28kg less than the predecessor Jazz by using a greater use of higher grade materials although the overall HSS (High Strength Steel) content has slightly decreased.

The new Jazz is 55mm longer, with a 30mm increase on the wheelbase, but the height and width remain as before.

Principle amongst the materials used is the boronated Press Hardened Steel used for the upper B Post reinforcement. Whereas the old Jazz had a 1.6mm thick 590MPa panel, the new model has a 1mm profile of 1500MPa. This, combined with a redesign of the shape of the B-post structure to better direct impact forces through to the roof, has resulted in a need to have a four panel stack at the cant rail that includes a 980MPa side reinforcement. To achieve this in production, Honda developed a new welding gun with multi-electrodes to produce a wider weld nugget which will undoubtedly be a challenge in repair.

Other changes include changing the profile of the chassis leg closing panels, the front suspension turrets, front outer wing reinforcements and the tailgate aperture panels. There have been revisions to the under-body cross-members surrounding the fuel tank and bracing the rear floor.

There have been several changes to increase interior space and packaging. These include recessing the radiator pack within the front panel instead of mounted in front of it, and a new tailgate latch mechanism has also allowed a further 35mm gain in luggage compartment space.

980MPa UHSS (Ultra High Strength Steel) is still used for the Sill reinforcement, the A Post reinforcement and inner and for the front bumper reinforcement (previously 590MPa). Use of the higher grade material has allowed thinner panel thicknesses so a consequentially lighter structure. This is supported by 780MPa UHSS for the front wing reinforcements, front chassis legs and the inner sills.

Technology A lot of work has been carried out to improve the aerodynamic efficiency of the new Jazz. The engine compartment has a full under-tray to aid airflow and there is a larger and smoother central floor under-shield too. There are an increased number of shields and seals around the cooling pack and the bonnet leading edge to direct and control air flow.

All models are fitted with Honda`s City-Brake Active System (an Autonomous Emergency Braking system) as standard. This system uses laser/radar technology to scan the road ahead, automatically applying the brakes if an imminent collision risk is detected. The system is designed to operate at speeds below 20 mph. When the system identifies a risk of collision, an audible and visual warning will occur, eventually followed by full autonomous braking.

SE & EX models also feature Honda`s Driver Assistance Safety Pack which uses radar sensors and front and rear-facing cameras. This includes Forward Collision Warning, Traffic Sign Recognition, Intelligent Speed Limiter, Lane Departure Warning and High Beam Support System:

Forward Collision WarningForward Collision Warning uses a multi-purpose camera to detect the risk of collision with a vehicle (car or truck) directly in front. The system operates at 15 km/h and above, giving visual and audible warnings. The warning distance can be adjusted to the driver’s preference.

Lane Departure WarningLane Departure Warning also uses the multi-purpose camera to track lane markings on the road to detect if the car deviates from its current lane without indicating, alerting the driver with audible and visual warnings. The system can be turned off by the driver.

High Beam Support SystemHigh Beam Support System works at speeds above 40 km/h to switch the headlamp High Beam on or off automatically depending on oncoming or preceding cars, bicycles and the ambient environmental brightness.

Blind Spot InformationBlind Spot Information uses radar to detect vehicles in the driver’s blind spot and warn of potential dangers when the vehicle is travelling at speeds above 20 km/h. The system detects cars and other vehicles to support drivers in situations such as passing other vehicles, or merging or changing lanes. The visual warning is displayed on the door mirror. This remains until the vehicle leaves the blind spot and if the driver operates the indicator whilst the vehicle is in the blind spot, the visual warning will blink and an audible warning will sound to alert the driver to the potential risk.

Cross Traffic MonitorHonda’s Cross Traffic Monitor system uses rear side radar sensors to warn the driver of approaching vehicles whilst he/she is reversing. The direction of an approaching vehicle is shown on the i-MID and an audible warning sound is given.

Traffic Sign RecognitionTraffic Sign Recognition system uses the multi-purpose camera to detect, recognise and display the road signs displaying speed limits and ‘No Passing’ information.

SE & EX models have the Honda Connect infotainment system which is an Android-based system with pre-installed applications giving access to internet services including web browsing, real-time traffic information, news, weather and social media. These are accessed via the 7” touchscreen.

Trim levels : S, SE and EXS features air conditioning, Bluetooth, DAB, 5” LCD display, cruise control, automatic headlamps and Honda`s City-Brake Active System (AEB system).

SE adds: front and rear parking sensors, heated and electrically adjustable door mirrors, Honda Connect infotainment system, 7” touchscreen display, 15” alloy wheels, and Honda`s Driver Assistance Safety Pack.

EX adds: smart entry and start, a climate control system, 16” alloy wheels and front fog lamps.Integrated Garmin navigation is available as an option on SE & EX models.

* CVT = Continuously Variable Transmission

PowertrainsA new, highly efficient 1.3 litre i-VTEC petrol engine from Honda’s Earth Dreams Technology series delivers 102 PS at 6,000rpm. This engine is designed for driving performance of the previous Jazz’s 1.4 litre engine, together with fuel economy equivalent to its 1.2 litre.

Combined with either a six-speed manual gearbox or a newly developed CVT, CO2 emissions are as low as 106 g/km. The CVT’s driveability uses new control software, exclusive to Europe, which simulates seven speeds and provides optimised gear change.
