Editor’s Corner

Only days following the midtermelections and still two months awaybefore the new Congress and statelegislatures begin, it’s now time tohurry up and wait.By virtue of their big night on Election Day, it’s the Re-

publicans turn to be on the clock. In the “What have you done for me (or to me) lately?”

department, voters across Michigan and the nation sent a“message” to Democrats (and President Obama) by givingRepublicans even greater control of the House of Repre-sentatives and control of the Senate for the first time since2006. In Michigan, Republicans in the State House alsogrew their majority. In wielding their influence and shiftingthe balance of power somewhat, voters also sent a warningof sorts to the victorious Republicans on Tuesday: You’renext. How quickly the pendulum swings these days.Six years ago, after Barack Obama was elected presi-

dent, I wrote that since he (and the Democrats) would beinheriting all the problems left behind byW, they would be“guilty by association” if things didn’t turn around quicklyenough for voters.(Little did I know at the time that the president would,

time and again, bring up all that he inherited from his pre-decessor as a defense to his being guilty by association.)To the same extent, unless things drastically change, two

years from now, the revolving door in Washington andLansing could once again be on auto pilot.Hey, what goes around comes around, right? If the Republicans can back up their talk with action

(now that we might actually see a U.S. Senate that can de-liberate bills passed by the House), I think the next twoyears could be good to Republicans and the President alike,if they actually work together. It seems that our “wait and see” threshold has shrunk in

direct correlation to the speeding up of our society, wherethings can’t change or happen quickly enough. But, if we have more of the same, all bets are off. These days, and at times justifiably so, voters feel that

they can’t afford to wait even two months, let alone twoyears to “wait and see” what happens. (Especially for thosewho are barely making ends meet.)Our fickle and impatient nature reminds me of a blind

date I went on a while back, a story I’ve shared in the past.We met for dinner; the conversation, mostly small talk

was nothing to write home about as we waited for our food.During those 10 minutes or so, my date apparently had

“waited and seen” enough to know that I was not going toget her “vote.”And so, when the waiter arrived with our food, she got

up from her chair, told him she’d like her food “to go,” andthen looked at me and said, “I gotta go.” Thanks for din-ner.”All in one fell swoop. So, Republicans and Democrats, alike, figure out a way

to work together and get things done or you might be thenext “to go.”Until next week, may the good news be yours.

On Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. thousands across the nation will celebrate Veteran’s Day,including those in Marshall. On Tuesday, a Veteran’s Day ceremony will be heldat the Veterans Memorial, across from Brooks Memorial Fountain.

Letters

ChadWilliams,Paw Paw"My grandfather was a veteran. He

sacrificed going to Vietnam. If he cango through that, he can go throughanything. Veterans deserve the honor.”

Bryan Cottrill,Columbus, Ohio"Because they served our country to

let us be free and have the freedoms todo what we are doing right now.”

Word on the StreetWhy is it important to honor our veterans?

by John Hendler

Phil Otto,Marshall"It’s important to recognize their

commitment and sacrifice. Less thanone percent of the population chooseto follow that path.”

Jim Dorosh,Marshall"It’s important to recognize their ulti-

mate sacrifice. Those are husbands, wives, sisters, brothers, sons and daugh-ters that were left behind for the free-doms we have today. Those freedomswere earned. We shouldn’t take that forgranted.”

Heather May,Columbus, Ohio"They put their lives on the line for

our freedom. We need more celebra-tion and times of recognition to honorthem.”

Tim Hine,Charlotte"Veterans are why we have the

peace we have. They decided to fightand die for us. The least we can do ishonor them.”

Joe Caron looks forward to serving on City CouncilTo the Editor:I would like to thank the

nearly 2,000 Marshall resi-dents who voted in Tues-day’s election. One of themost important freedoms weenjoy as citizens is the rightto vote. We debate is-sues, assess and articulatecandidates’ vision, positionsand qualifications and thenexpress our opinion peace-fully via the ballot box. I am

grateful for the trust placedin me by the voters, and Ilook forward to serving. On a personal note, I want

to thank the people whovoted for meand who supported our cam-paign. No one wins an elec-tion on his own. It takesgrass roots supporters and ateam effort. I am very grate-ful to all who helped makethis election possible.

Please also join me in rec-ognizing and honoring myopponent, Jody Mankerian’sservice to our community.During her time on thecouncil, she has beenan advocate for Marshall, and I look forward to work-ing with her and other lead-ers in our community—in-cluding our new mayor andthe council—to find solu-tions for public problems

and to help move our home-town forward in positiveways.I look forward to bringing

energy and new perspectivesto the Council in my role asthe representative for Ward5. Thank you againfor placing your trust inme. And thank you for theopportunity to serve.

Joe Caron,Marshall

Kari Schurig thanks Marshall community for supportTo the Editor:I would like to express my thankful-

ness to the citizens of Marshall for theconfidence they have shown in me byelecting me to City Council. I havebeen blessed to have so many support-ers and am beyond grateful for thisnew opportunity. I also want to con-gratulate Jack Reed as our new mayor, and Joe Caron as another newly

elected councilman, as well as thankHarry Marshall and Jody Mankerianfor the honorable campaigns they ran.Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know

the plans I have for you’, declares theLord, ‘plans to prosper you and not toharm you, plans to give you hope anda future.’” I am excited to see the pos-sibilities that God has, not only formyself and my family through this, but

for the families of Marshall.I will do my best to help Marshall

move forward in growth without losingits family friendly, welcoming, invitingcharm.Once again, thank you all for your

support, and I look forward to buildinga future together.

Marshall faced Harper Creek in the final Thursday night which oc-curred after the ad-visor&chronicle went to press. Against Pennfield, Marshall was led by Logan Kiessling’s 14 kills and nine digs. Nicole Tucker had seven blocks and sixkills. Kaylie Bates had 27 assists and seven digs and Brooke Mason had 15 digs. "Tonight was a struggle for us,” said coach John Miller following the match. “I think wecame out too amped up and our adrenaline started going away by the second set. Pennfield is a good team and we know how bad they wanted to beat us tonight. Wehad just enough to get past them. They just kept coming and coming. We know that we are going to have to play much better if we want a chance to beat Harper Creek."
