I’m not sure if they changed others’ minds.” See story on page 22 County Board absorbs Road Commission by 6-1 vote In what proved to a surprise to virtually no one in attendance, the Calhoun County Board of Commissioners on Sept. 20 voted, by a 6-1 mar- gin, to dissolve the Calhoun County Road Commission. The lone “no” vote came from District 5 Commissioner Julie Camp Seifke who felt that more time needed to be invested in determining what could be done in resolving the matter. “I believe the residents deserve to know how service in their communities are going to change and at what point,” she said. “I’ve been uncomfortable, and I remain uncomfortable on voting on some- thing that is unclear.” See story on page 18 Chad Holt takes position as Mar Lee’s new principal Marshall native Chad Holt returned to Marshall in early August to begin a position with Mar Lee School as its new principal on Aug. 20. “I’m very honored and excited to get a chance to come home and lead a school that has such a great rep- utation,” said Holt. On Aug. 6, the Mar Lee School Board approved the recommendation to hire Holt. “Chad has a wealth of experience at a district and building level,” said retiring Mar Lee Superintendent Bill LeTarte. “He is knowledgeable about the school improvement process and has communication and personal skills to work with our staff. He works exceedingly well with people and is very focused on students and academics.” See story on page 34 Gone, but not forgotten: Marshall’s Wayne Mead memorialized On Sept. 22, the late Wayne Mead of Marshall was memorialized at County Farm Park in Ann Arbor with a rock in tribute to his work. Mead, who was the supervisor of the Malletts Creek restora- tion project, was killed in Ann Arbor on Dec. 20 at age 58 from an accident at the worksite. “When this accident happened everyone was devastated,” said Wayne’s wife Cathy Mead. “They (the Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation) just wanted to honor him because they felt he was instrumental in the project. Marshall claims 18th straight district titleThe Marshall High School equestrian team won the school’s 18th consecutive districttitle on Sept. 23 in the rain and mud at the Branch County Fairgrounds in Coldwater.The team advanced to regional competition this weekend, Sept. 28-30 in BerrienSprings with a state meet berth on the line.

MHS golfers take fourth at SMAC tournamentAmanda Genise, Sammi Price named All-Conference

The Marshall High School girls golfteam claimed fourth place overall follow-ing the second and final round of theSouthwest Michigan Athletic Conferencetournament played Sept. 26 at Angel’sCrossing in Vicksburg.

Marshall shot a four-score total of 371,20 shots better than the team’s first roundperformance on Aug. 29 to finish with anoverall total of 762.

Lakeview placed first with a score of673.

Leading Marshall was Amanda Genise,who shot 81 in round two to finish with atwo-round total of 171. Genise was fourthoverall and named All-Conference.

Also named All-Conference wasSammi Price, who finished eighth overallwith a 176 total (90-86).

Annie Cape shot 100 to go with a firstround 105 for a combined 205.

Jill Puckett shot 104, two shots betterthan in the first round to finish at 210.

Shannon Hicks shot a no-count 110,which was 30 strokes better than her firstround performance and Lauren Beckershot a no-count 117.

The final SMAC East jamboree tookplace Sept. 17 as Marshall [laced secondto secure second place for the season be-hind Lakeview.

Genise just missed out on lowestSMAC East average by one shot and tooksecond while Price was seventh in averagean also named All-SMAC East.

The Marshall High School boys cross-country team placed fourth Sept.22 at the Pittford Invitational that featured periods of heavy rain and hail throughout the competi-tion. In the freshman race, the Marshall team of Christian Kalisz (12th), Joey Blanchard (13th), and Matthew Cole (21st) brought home the runner up trophy. The sopho-more team of Kurt Swaton (2nd), Weston Herman (3rd), Dakoda Laupp (9th), Josh Turner (16th), and Phillip Staab (18th) returned with the first place trophy for the sec-ondyear in a row. All five sophomores placed in the top 20 in their race and brought home individual medals. The juniors placed third in their individual race being led byQuinn Hovarter (13th) closely followed by Cam Ragan (16th) and August Tierney (18th) all of whom earned individual medals. Seniors Jon Rose (14th) and Stuart Murch(16th) lead the senior team to a sixth place finish. Running personal bests despite the awful weather conditions Kalisz, Staab, and Herman. The Marshall High School varsity volleyball team improved its record to 14-10-2 fol-lowing a sweep at Battle Creek Central on Sept. 19 by scores of 25-9. 25-9 and 25-19. Brooke Mason led Marshall with 25 assists and also had four aces. Chandler Ve-ich led Marshall with six aces. Grace Crawford, above right, had nine kills and twoblocks. Logan Kiessling also had nine kills on the night. Pictured, above left isHeather Sell. On Sept. 15, the team went 3-2 at the Cereal City Invitational in Bat-tle Creek.
