It was all about TLAs (three-letter acronyms) at FBBCthis month! Our guest speaker, Malcolm Gee, one of ourwonderful First Responders rattled off CPR, AED and SCA all in onesentence! But once he had taken us through the finer points ofcardiopulmonary resuscitation, automated external defibrillatorsand sudden cardiac arrest, we were no longer all at sea. This was probably one of the most interactive sessions that theclub had ever seen. It was also certainly the most important interms of saving someone’s life. We had two members valiantlytrying to resuscitate a dummy whilst Malcolm explained how easyit is to administer CPR (which buys valuable time before theemergency services arrive). These days it is commonplace to have an AED located nearby, which can be used by a complete amateur to re-start the heart byfollowing the voice and visual prompts which guide the userthrough the defibrillation process. There are already some AEDsin situ in Faringdon and there are plans to have more. If you are abusiness and you would like to have an AED on your premises, please do let us know. Who knows, it could save someone’s life!FBBC’s next meeting with be on Monday 3rd February when ourresident IT guru, Raoul van Eijndhoven of QuidneIT will remind usabout all those things that we should be doing to ensure that ourcomputer systems run smoothly and does not let us down whendisaster strikes.FBBC, is an informal networking group which is celebrating itstenth anniversary this year. Business UpdateThe Faringdon Chamber of Commerce welcomed inthe New Year by voting unanimously to back aproposal to create an economic development strategyfor the town. One of the key outcomes of an economic developmentstrategy is to attract investment as well as businesses lookingto expand or relocate. It will demonstrate that a town iseffectively open for business. Historically towns with such astrategy demonstrate quicker economic growth. Sustainableeconomic growth is something that the Chamber of Commercewants to foster, rather than stand by and witness theseemingly perpetual residential development of the town’sfringes with little or no thought to providing local jobs andservices to counter-balance this.If this is something that you wish to get involved with, pleaseget in touch. We need willing hearts and minds from all tradesand business types to come with us on this exciting journey. Our regular monthly meetings are open to all and take place onthe second Monday of each month at 6:30pm at theDavenport’s Business Centre in the centre of town. The nextmeeting is on 10th February and our AGM is on 10th March at theSudbury House Hotel.Following on from our speed networking event In January, thismonth we have another social event - a curry night at “TheViceroy” on Thursday 27th February. Meet at the front bar of

“The Old Crown Coaching Inn” at 6pm prior to dinner at 7pm.Follow us on facebook, LinkedIn or @faringdonfirst – or visitour website www.faringdonchamberofcommerce.co.uk

The next distillery to ‘visit’ on our tour of Islay is Caol Ila, onthe north east of the island. It’s in a remote and beautifullocation in a hidden cove near Port Askaig, and the trip up

‘over the top’ of the island is part of the pleasure of a visit. Atthe right time of the year you’ll hear stags bellowing and, ifyou’re lucky, see a Golden Eagle floating along the scarp.Caol Ila was founded in 1846 but in the early 1970s all of thedistillery apart from the warehouses was demolished andrebuilt. This gives parts of the building a look ratherreminiscent of schools of that period but such horrors aredispersed when you get to the working part of the distilleryand, in particular, the magnificent still room. With its floor toceiling windows looking out over the Sound of Islay to thePaps of Jura, and it’s six gleaming bulbous, copper stills, it’sa memorable place to be. In fact, when I was there thewhole visit was very memorable as distillery manager BillyStichell gave me a tremendous tour of the distillery whichculminated with several drams being imbibed whilstlistening to his tales of days gone by and looking out at thatstunning view.Known for its full bodied, subtly smoky/medicinal, pepperyand yet sweet style, Caol Ila was for many yearspredominantly used in blends such as Johnnie Walker butthe recent rise in the popularity of peated single malts led tosome Caol Ila being released in all its unblended glory. Someunpeated whisky is now also being produced and although, again, mainly for blends some has been released as a singlemalt.A gentle introduction to the peated Caol Ila is the Moch. It’screamy, lemony, sooty taste matches perfectly with someshortbread with a dollop of lemon curd on it (honestly!) andit is a very easy drinking dram. Moving on up the range, the12 year old is an elegant, medium bodied malt with a terrificbalance of smoke, oiliness, spices and sweet fruitiness. The Caol Ila Distillers Edition is an interesting whisky as afterinitial maturation in Bourbon casks it is transferred toMoscatel sherry casks, which results in a multi-layereddelight of bonfire smoke, cinnamon, sweetness andmaltiness with a crisp, dry finish.Of the unpeated expressions one is of special interest as itwas released in honour of the lovely Billy Stichell, who isretiring. The whisky that has been chosen was matured inthree different cask types and is sweet, spicy and aromatic. Also available in the unpeated range is a 12 year old and a 14year old which, very unusually for the distillery, has beenmatured in sherry cask and marries lemony freshness withspices and fruit. '' How different we are I thought: the same words say things otherwise to us.''I recently watched an interview with the French authoress Helene Cixous, and like this book, she is so intenselyfocused, it made me feel almost guilty for not writing more. For not truly investigating the inner-sanctum of my literary self-worth and value.Perhaps this ought not be totally surprising, especially when Jacques Derrida writes:  '' Helene Cixous is today thegreatest writer in what I shall call, if I may, my language French.  And I weigh my words in saying this.  For a verygreat writer must be a poet-thinker, very much a poet and a very thinking poet.''One need only read a few pages of Love Itself in the Letterbox to perhaps partially ascertain and come to

metaphorical grips with the above quote by Derrida.  As on page seven of the opening chapter 'Olivier de Serres - A SinglePassion,'  Cixous writes: '' Who could have told me that everything that seemed incredible at Olivier de Serres when we weredown there as if knocked over and trampled beneath paws, now forty years later we ourselves would look upon from abovelike gods looking at the affairs of mortals.  When I awoke Olivier de Serres following your lead, I am in the midst of readingDemeure, Athenes the strange twice-haunted text by Derrida: haunted once by the death of Socrates who is a beautifulwoman, dressed in white, beautiful as her name tall as her soul dressed in daylight, more exactly in the hour of the day'sdawning, a second time in truth perhaps the first, by a sentence.  This sentence is also tall and beautiful, but for its part or herpart, she does not come, she precedes everyone.''Are not the lines: '' haunted once by the death of Socrates who is a beautiful woman, dressed in white, beautiful as her name, tall as her soul dressed in daylight, more exactly in the hour of the day's dawning'' more poetic than fictional?  More involvedthan they might otherwise be?  More elaborate in explanation, almost to the point of expressing three or four differentemotions, simultaneously?Derrida has already said it, it goes without saying that Cixous is '' very much a poet and a very thinking poet.''  Right down tothe placing or non placing of commas; which Oscar Wilde was renowned for agonizing over.Love Itself in the Letterbox is, as its title suggests, an acceptance, if not appreciation of, the poetry of the post.  It conveys loveover a dense duration of forty years - that recoils and recalls itself - by way of the forever lost and never found. And each of the nine pieces here in, never stray too far away from the dictum that is the very last line of the seventh chapterFaithfully Forever: '' Life has two faces one of shameless happiness the other of shameless pain.''Prior to this ultimate, clearly considered conclusion, the authoress writes: '' Are they these faithfully's the last shudders of amadman's howls?  Or the withdrawal, the lull after the convulsion, the detumescence of a word, the death rattle of a god'sdream of faithfulness?  Or else nothing.  But nothing without any meaning is impossible it seems to me for the master ofpoems.''Like the authoress herself, this is a profoundly intense, individual and brilliant piece of work.  As such, it's left me feelingprofoundly inspired.

For the love of an Italian Varietal…..For some, February brings with it a healthy dose of anticipation ofhow the Royal Mail will possibly manage the hefty load ofValentine’s cards to be delivered to their door; for others, the sheerintermittent presence of that elusive ball in the sky (aka ‘the sun’),provides the promise of ‘spring about to be sprung’.Such expectation can be perhaps channelled into an avenue that itis slightly more tangible, which randomly, has led me back onto thepathway of Italian varietals. Throughout my wine learning (which isan endlessly enjoyable and somewhat inconclusive experience), thetopic of Italian wines proved to be a very complicated missionindeed!Italy was one of the first off the blocks in wine production, recordsindicate that the Etruscans and Greek settlers founded wine makingbefore the Romans in the 2nd Century BC.Italy shares the podium with France, claiming first place for thelargest wine producer in the world, representing approximately 1/3of the world’s production in 2012-2013.The first official classification system for wine was introduced in 1963.However, unlike the classification system where wine grapes mustbe grown in a designated area, vines are cultivated practicallyeverywhere on the Italian peninsula, from the Alps in the north tothe islands in the south. Such diverse wine growing terrain, soil andclimates has a great influence on the range of flavours in Italy’s wines.Italy’s Ministry of Agriculture & Forestry (MIPAAF) has recordedover 350 different ‘authorised’ grape varieties; however anadditional estimated 2000+ indigenous varieties are used as well. The more well-known include Sangiovese (used in Chianti Classico),Barbera, Pinot Grigio, Nebbiolo (Barolo & Barbaresco), Barbera,Corvina (Valpolicella & Amarone), Garganega (Soave) and Primitivo(aka Zinfandel in California). Imported ‘noble’ grape varieties includeMerlot, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. Some interesting Italian wines available locally:Canti Estate Fiano 2012Puglia, Italy£7.49 TescoPuglia lies on the ‘heel’ of Italy, is relatively flat and temperaturescan be hot during the summer, but this is mitigated by sea breezes, particularly on the Salento Peninsula. Puglia is historically the homeof red grape varieties such as Primitivo and Negroamaro, howeverthe introduction and success of quality white grape varieties such asFiano has gained global attention.Crisp, medium dry white wine with aromas and flavours of melon, peaches, honeysuckle and blossom, finishing with a crisp, citrusfreshness.Indio Montepulciano d’Abruzzo 2008Abruzzo, Italy£13.99 Den Boer WinesThe region of Abruzzo is located in Central Italy and stretches fromthe heart of the Apennines to the Adriatic Sea on a greatlymountainous and wild terrain.Montepulciano d’Abruzzo represents over 80% of all DOC winesmade in Abruzzo. Records note that the Montepulciano grape hasbeen grown in the region since the mid-700s and that it has wellcemented its place and well regarded reputation here.Composed of 90% Montepulciano and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, thisred wine is full bodied, rich, and opulent with supple, well integratedtannins. Aromas and flavours of wild blackberries, ripe black cherriesunderpinned with developed flavours of prunes and vanilla spice arerounded off with a lengthy finish.

Hello Again…

Signs of Spring are very clear as I write – longer evenings, daffodils, leaf-spears, just appearing and snowdrops with theirwhite bells already opening. Relentless rain has changed to some sunshine, fog, frost and dry weather but little chance forthe ground to accept farm vehicles, even tractors and 4 X 4s, for weeks of drier weather to come. Some chance!

Honeybees

Europe has 13.4 million too few honeybee colonies to properly pollinate its crops, according tonew research from the University of Reading.

In real terms, this is the equivalent of around 7 BILLION bees!

The discovery, made by scientists at the University’s Centre for Agri-Environmental Research (CAER), working for the EU STEPprogramme on pollinator health, shows that demand for insect pollination is growing five times as fast as the number ofhoneybee colonies across Europe, as farmers across the continent grow more oil crops, such as oilseed rape and sunflowers, and fruit.  Many of the most important crops in Europe, such as rapeseed, sunflower, soybeans, apples and strawberriesbenefit from pollination by bees.

The research findings, led by Professor Simon Potts, suggest that agriculture in many countries is increasingly reliant uponwild pollinators, such as bumblebees, solitary bees and hoverflies. However, Europe still lacks coherent environmental and

agricultural policies to protect these insects' habitats, Reading researchers warned.

Professor Simon Potts added, "We face a catastrophe in future years unless we act now.Wild pollinators need greater protection. They are the unsung heroes of the countryside, providing a critical link in the food chain for humans and doing work for free that wouldotherwise cost British farmers £1.8bn to replace.

"There is a growing disconnection between agricultural and environmental policies acrossEurope. Farmers are encouraged to grow oil crops, yet there is not enough joined-upthinking about how to help the insects that will pollinate them. We need a proper strategyacross Europe to conserve wild bees and pollinators through habitat protection,

agricultural policy and farming methods – or we risk big financial losses to the farming sector and a potential food securitycrisis." Help the Bees!…..

Cauliflowers Fluffy!!…

I think the cauliflower gets a bit of a hard time frankly! I usedto be one of these moaners about this beautiful vegetablebut am now quite converted. It's versatility is boundless andit's easy to deal with, with no preparation really at all!

The cauliflower is part of the brassica family. It's namederives from the Latin for cabbage which is caulis and theword flower put together. You can get different variations inother colours like purple and green as well as our usualbeautiful white. It's origins are based in the Mediterraneanand it worked its way up to our fairland in and around the 1700's. It wasprized for a long time by the French, Iwould imagine because it is a thing ofsuch beauty. And if you see theromseco variety, it is a vision of fractalwonder. It's swirls and flowingpatterns in a wonderful mathematicformation.

The cauliflowers that are delivered to me are grown locallyand are often so enormous they break the bag handles! Butthey go a long way for a small amount of money whichnowadays is important. So when cooking with it, don't cookit for too long. It can really suffer badly from just a shortamount of over cooking with a mushy grey result, reminiscent of school!

Why not try cauliflower in a curry. It really sucks in all thesurrounding flavours and marries brilliantly well withcoconut and almonds. Little florets thrown in to a pilaftowards the end of cooking work really brilliantly or keep itraw to dip in to hummus or guacamole. One of my mostfavourite things is just so obvious, most would turn theirnose up at a wonderful cauliflower cheese. I really like to topit with some halved cherry tomatoes and breadcrumbs aswell as the cheese and then bake until the top is reallycrunchy. Adding bacon or broccoli adds interest too.

Today's recipe is one of my newest creations in the shop it'sCauliflower Cheese Soup.

To serve 4-6 people, peel and chop an onion and soften in aknob of butter for around 5 minutes. Cut up your cauli andadd to the pan, just cooking it for a few moments whilst youget the stock ready. Pour over enough stock to cover, probably around 1.5 litres, then simmer for a scant 10minutes. Whizz with a hand blender or liquidizer and seasonwith plenty of salt and black pepper. Add about 100mlcream, whipping or double, then add a good strongcheddar, around 150g and stir it through to melt.Serve this beautiful creamy soup with somegorgeously crunchy croutons.

| The Advertiser | page 19 | Healthy TipsAre you struggling for motivation to start or continue yourhealth and training goals for 2014? Below are a few thingsyou can implement to help keep you on track!

Train with SomeoneThis can be done through various means!Get a training partnerFind someone who has similar goals and is of a similar abilityand go to the gym or outside and train with them. This willnot only make the gym or your training session moreenjoyable it will make you accountable to someone else. Soif you've had a bad day and are a bit tired, where it wouldnormally have been easy to skip your session you will nowhave someone expecting you!Get a personal trainerPersonal training may be an additional cost but if you've paidextra money for an appointment you can be pretty sure youwon’t miss it! They will also be encouraging you to exercisebetween sessions and keeping you on track so you noticefaster results!Join a class or sports teamJoining an exercise class or a team for a sport is a great wayto meet new people and make new friends thus making youmotivated to go and exercise so you can catch up and enjoyit together.Set Goals: These should be both short and long term andspecific.Short TermShort term goals are a great way to make lots of changesthat you stick to over a period of time. A good technique isto make one for a week and incorporate a different one thefollowing week and so on. For example "This week I'm goingto drink at least 2 litres of water per day" By setting thetarget to hit and making it specific you are more likely to doit rather than if you had just said "I'm going to drink morewater"Medium termThese should be slightly bigger goals thus demanding moretime. For example "In two months I want to lose 6lb" or "Iwant to lift an extra 5kg on my squat in six weeks" or "I wantto decrease my 5k run time by 4 minutes in three monthstime" So by setting realistic but specific goals you'll bemotivated to really try and achieve them!Long TermThese could be anything up to over a year away and couldinclude your final target for fat loss or it could be anevent/race you've entered and need to be ready for.

Seasonal ChangesWith summer approaching and holidays being booked, weddings planned and new clothes to be bought, there areloads of reasons to start getting into shape. A lot of peopleleave it late, when really the more time you give yourself, thebetter the outcome will be.For any further details on how to keep motivated, settinggoals, or if you want a little free advice to get you startedcontact the team at The Gym At Carswell 01367 870337 oremail [email protected]

…flowers for all occasions, memories for all time

Spring is just starting to stir but its early days and there arestill very few insects about. Its a great time to visit a NaturalHistory Museum and learn a little more about arthropods ingeneral. Natural History Museums are often housed insidestunning buildings with a heady mix of ornate architectureand detailed decorations. The Oxford University Museum ofNatural History is our biggest local museum nestledamongst the dreaming spires of Oxford itself. It is a Grade 1listed building and was closed on 30th December 2012 as wellas throughout 2013 for extensive roof repairs. Every one ofthe 8,500 glass tiles had to be removed, cleaned, replacedand sealed. Now finally, on Saturday 15th February, thedoors will be opened once more onto a better and brightermuseum. Most importantly there will no longer be any leaks! This has been a massive renovation project with pricelessand delicate specimens requiring storage. A greatopportunity to clean and undertake restoration work. Therehas even been the chance to completely redesign staticdisplays and to take fascinating objects around local schools. Its certainly been an exciting time with long hours and lotsof work involved. As well as being an active arthropodresearch centre, the Hope Entomological Collections arehoused in the museum and contain 25,000 arthropod typescomprising of over 5 million specimens. There are insectscollected by Darwin, Wallace and even Dr. Livingstone'sfamous tetse fly. The oldest pinned insect in the world isthere, a Bath White butterfly collected in 1702 by WilliamVernon in Cambridgeshire. These collections are vital forresearch and reference. So why not come along and spend aday at the museum? Submerse yourself in wonder andamazement at the collections. Marvel at the buildingsbeauty now restored to its former glory when it hostedCharles Darwin's Great Debate in 1860! There is an extremelygood permanent exhibit devoted entirely to entomology aswell as living displays and the opportunity to handle real liveinvertebrates. Have a superb family day out - go andimmerse yourselves in a really awesome learning zone!Entrance is free but save a penny for a dinosaur cookie in thecafe overlooking the T-Rex.

The AK-PoetsFronted by English singer/songwriter David Marx,The AK-Poets is an ever evolving musical vehiclethat plays and performs an array of original music.Having already released three albums on the

independent Revolver label (which can beheard/purchased via

http://davidmarx.bandcamp.com/), the materialwavers between the mighty delicate, acoustic andfolk induced; lyrically and melodically explosive,

while simultaneously drenched in drama and loud (rock'n'roll) truth.Influenced by the likes of Tom Waits, The Beatles and The Clash, the bandconsists of Marx on vocals and rain'n'napalm infused guitar, former CharredHeart and Trick Baby Pat Luszcz on bass and Black Sheep Apprenticefrontman Richard 'Skiddy' Skidmore on drums.  Marx has recorded with

various members of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band in New York as wellas undertaken a considerable amount of session work in London.
