Common Methods of Effective Advertisement
Fliers – A common method of advertisement, fliers are typically the easiest of ways to
advertise your organization. Using standard 8.5” x 11” sheets with eye-catching art is a
sure way to advertise any information about your organization or its events. Use a
commercial printing shop near campus for best service.
Large Posters – Sometimes a large advertisement is needed to catch attention. Using
much larger posters, such as 2’ x 3’, with the same set-up as a flier will enhance the
message of the display. A commercial printing shop may also print these with ease.
Hand-outs – If you need to get news of an upcoming event out quickly, using small hand-
outs (no bigger than a quarter of the size of letter-sized paper) with quick bits of
information is an effective method of distribution. Having one or two people pass them
out in high-traffic areas is a sure way to introduce your message to the student body in
little time. Again, commercial printing shops are the best place to obtain these.
Newspaper Ads – To reach a large audience, seek to obtain space in a local newspaper.
Seek space in The Technician or in any other similar newspaper to display your
advertisement. This may not be the most effective method of advertisement due to cost,
but the end result will reach a large audience.
Chalk – Another way of reaching several students in a short period of time is by chalking
high-traffic areas. Using as few words alone, state the basics of your message so that
passing students may catch a glance and hopefully retain that information easily.
Websites – Having a permanent website is an excellent way to both keep track of your
organization and display upcoming events. There are several web servers that will host a
website at little or no cost. While there are varying methods of coding, most will present
your organization’s information in a clear, easy to read manner. This can range from
Google Sites and Google Docs to any other commercial web servers available.
