Ladies Thank you to all for helping make this year’s Lucky Number Luncheon a great success. It always amazes me how everything comes together. The gift baskets were beautiful! So many great comments on the baskets and the menu. A special thank you to Judy Labiak and Phyllis Dickinson!! We are now looking forward to our Awards Night. This is the night where all our hard work shines through by rewarding organizations and scholarship winners monies raised through our fundraising events. Don’t forget, it is not too late for you to register for the International Convention. If you have never attended, you should seriously consider attending. It is an amazing experience you will remember forever! Sincerely Renette Janora A,B,C'S OF ZONTA LUCKY NUMBERS' LUNCHEON We women are incredible! We profited almost $9,000. We had 301 attendees, 260 baskets or gift certificates and 59 donations from friends and merchants. Some merchants gave several donations and some needed to be added to. All incidental money was used and Nina has all the receipts. The thank you notes went out, the pictures are posted on the web, and everything is at Phyllis's counted and in order. Good luck to Theresa and Gina who will the 2015 chairs of our luncheon. Again, congratulations on a terrific fundraiser. Judy Labiak

ST. MONICA HIGHLIGHTS

Recently, Nancy Langer and the teachers at St. Monica’s have commented to me about our ongoing involvement, both service and financially. Because it is such an exciting project, I will pass on an update. Renette ended her knitting circle for the year with a party that she and another volunteer brought to the girls. The knitters loved the goodies they brought too! It was a great club for the girls and the girls are still knitting. Phyllis is still working on making progress in their library, a long tedious job. There are not only books to be organized, but also donated books on the shelves to be sorted or removed. Much work ahead! As in the Phyllis tradition….. prevail on. St. Monica’s fundraiser is Wednesday, May 14, at the Convention Center in the evening. Anyone interested in an invitation, please call or email me at 435-1217 or [email protected]. An adapted version of the musical “Wizard Of Oz” will be held on Friday, May 30, at 3:00 pm in the school auditorium; and ZONTA members are invited. I am helping with the music and costumes and am having a great time. Lastly, donations of navy sweaters or black flats are needed; used are ok or varied sizes. They also could use hair scrunches and hair bands. One last note, St. Monica’s is truly a rewarding service experience for any of our members that can afford and manage their time into the school schedule. Peggy Hegierski

DISTRICT 4 SPRING WORKSHOP

Areas 3 & 4--Saturday, April 5, 2014 Hosted by Zonta Club of Rochester

Attended by Linda DeGain, Ann Detzler, Phyllis Dickinson, Peggy Hegierski, Judy Labiak, Ann Marie Wik

The Workshop ended shortly after 3:00 on Saturday and here I am still doing tasks related to the Workshop (as are a few people from the Rochester Committee). The next Spring Workshop for Areas 3 & 4 will be in Niagara Falls, ON and then it moves east to Geneva in 2016.

I don’t think I got to say Hi to everyone on Saturday, there was just so much on my “job list” throughout the day – so I thank you and your members who made it to Henrietta on Saturday and put Zonta ahead of your family for another day. We had 72 people registered and I think all but 4 showed up. 14 of 16 Areas 3 & 4 Clubs participated along with some from Area 5 (Olean) and the presenters who came out of Canada, along with Governor Lee Fogarty out of Pittsburgh. I, was pleased that 9 FIRST TIMERS came and hopefully learned a lot about Zonta and have begun to build friendships with members in other club. With the greater use of power point presentations there are fewer paper handouts, but there were a few things in the folders: Zonta Donation Form so more individual donations can be made to the International Foundation Funds, the District 4 Treasurer’s Report (based on March 31, 2014 figures) which also included the membership count for all the clubs, and an Advocacy and Service Relationship sheet (to help us understand how the two often blend together). Lt. Governor, Joanne Raymond, presided over the Membership “mini workshop” and I’ve scanned in the paper she handed out during that session for you. The Z-Club session by Lori Robinson was a power point presentation and that will most likely be placed on the D4 website in a few weeks. During the Service and Advocacy Presentation a question was raised about why some Clubs were not part of the on-screen presentation – if your club was not shown on one of the slides, then please try to get the details to Alyce and Toni so they can “tweak” their presentations before they send them on to Sandra Cronk after all the Workshops are held. I think a question regarding Convention and who might carry a Proxy Vote, came from where the Club Presidents were sitting together. Hopefully by now all of you have selected your Club Delegate and Alternate Delegate – so please share that information with me and I’ll share it with the other Area 4 Clubs, then they can make individual contact with you about Carrying a Proxy for them. Please don’t delay on this

– the forms must be to International by May 12. Many forms and information regarding Convention were in the mailing sent to Club Presidents from ZI the end of March. Be sure to check the ZI website for updates concerning Convention. I got a message today that the Rochester Club has sent off a Brief Club History to Kathi Scanlon, Batavia Club was done last month, so I hope more of you have this on your job list so Kathi can get these organized with those coming in from other Areas in the District. I already have visits to the Buffalo Club on April 15 and to Cheektowaga-Lancaster May 15 on my calendar – and I’ll be at the Rochester Club’s first Lucky Number Luncheon on April 26. Unfortunately I can NOT do any club visits between May 18 and the 24 (I also miss my own Club’s meeting that week). So, if you’d like to have me visit your Club one more time, please let me know soon. Buffalo Club President, Mary Jane Wajmer, will soon be taking over the leadership position of Area 4 Director and then you’ll be inviting her to your Clubs. I think this is all I need to share with you right now. Again, I appreciate everything you and your members do for Zonta – YOU ARE GREAT !

DONATING TO CHARITY A WIN-WIN Taken in part from Forever Young, by Christine A Smyczynski, January, 2011, pp. 22-23. What do we do with all those things that are in perfectly good condition that we no longer need or use, or those gifts that we just can’t see ourselves using? Your answer: donate. Here are some guidelines for donations.

Don’t give junk. Items should be in working condition; clothing should be free from rips, stains, and holes.

Don’t donate anything broken, soiled or spoiled.

Be sure to wash clothing, dust off house-hold items and make sure food items are not expired.

Make sure the charity accepts the items you wish to donate. If in doubt, call the organization.

Keep a record of your donations, especially if you itemize your taxes and claim a deduction.

Consider some of the smaller, lesser-known organizations in the community.

Financial donations are always appreciated Some organizations in WNY that accept donations for goods needed year-round: BAKER VICTORY SERVICES—780 Ridge Road, Lackawanna, 828-9500, www.bakervictoryservices.org
