Remote Field ProbesOlympus NDT is proud to introduce its improved tube testingremote feld probe series. Remote feld testing (RFT) probes arebeing used to successully inspect erromagnetic tubing suchas carbon steel or erritic stainless steel. They are very sensitivewhen detecting and measuring volumetric deects resulting romerosion, corrosion, wear, and bae cuts. Sensitivity to pitting hasbeen urther improved with the new design o these probes.

A remote feld probe is a low-requency variant o the exciter-pickup eddy current probe, characterized by a exciter-pickupdistance o at least 2.5 to 3 times the tube outside diameter (OD).This distance is necessary and critical in order to have the pickupcoils sense the remote magnetic feld rather than the directfeld.

Olympus NDT remote feld probes and equipment are usedaround the world to successully inspect heat exchangers, eedwa-ter heaters, and boiler tubes.Olympus remote-feld probe improvements eature:

Signal clarity and detection capability o the dierentialchannel

Increased signal-to-noise ratio with improved electronics and

preamplifer Thicker probe casing or increased durability Flat probe tip that does not get stuck in dirty tubes Lightweight design or larger probe diameters

    Improved Rigid Casing Probes

The improved remote feld probes are available in three rigid cas-ing common confgurations:

Single exciter TRS series Dual exciter TRX series Dual pickup TRT series

All three models are available in various diameters, center re-quencies, and cable lengths. They also eature a solid body con-struction, a sturdy probe cable, an embedded preamplifer circuitinside the probe head, and a 19-pin ITT Cannon connector orcompatibility with the MultiScan MS 5800-R acquisition unit andolder equipment such as the TC4700 and TC5700.

Remote Field Testing (RFT)Remote feld testing is a through-wall transmission technique. Thebasic probe is made o one exciter coil and two pickup coils. Twomagnetic felds are present: the direct feld, in the vicinity o theexciter coil, is rapidly attenuated with distance while the indirectfeld propagates along the tube axis and is rediused back throughthe tube wall.

The zone where the indirect feld is dominant is called the remotefeld. This zone is present at a distance greater than 2 tube diam-eters.

All remote feld probes have their pickup coils set at 2.5 to 3 timesthe tube OD to ensure that only the indirect feld is picked up.

All Olympus NDT RFT probes have a set o circumerentialpickup coils that can be operated simultaneously in absolute anddierential mode.

Preamplifer and ElectronicsOlympus RFT probes were the frst to use a preamplifcationcircuit located inside the probe head, dramatically reducing thecable slap noise produced when pulling the probe. The new se-ries probes include urther electronic improvements and balancedcircuits or increased noise immunity.

Mechanical ResistanceIn-service tubes are rarely clean and can signifcantly contribute toprobe casing wear. The new design eatures a probe casing twiceas thick as the previous models, helping to extend the probe lie.

Flat TipFlat tip is now included in all rigid RFT probe designs. A atprobe tip helps prevent the probe rom getting stuck on the inter-nal scale commonly ound in in-service tubing. Probe ends have aslightly oversized diameter to help urther protect the casing rom

    wear.

Higher Dierential Signal ClarityRedesign o the dierential channel has signifcantly improvedsignal cleanliness and clarity, helping the analysts to reduce thenumber o non-relevant indications.

Improved ResolutionOptimized coil design now allows greater resolution o localizeddeects on both the absolute and the dierential channels. Theimproved resolution helps distinguish the indications.

Sharp SignalsOptimized coil designs deliver sharp, crisp signals, ree o noise. On single exciter models, the absolute channel has also been im-proved in order to obtain better similarity o the exciter and pickup

eects, making analysis using the Voltage Plane easier and quicker

Improved Detection CapabilityWith increased signal quality comes urther detection capability, especially on the dierential channel. As the noise level is broughtdown on the new models, smaller holes are detected with clearersignals. The same design optimization has been applied to the

whole rigid RFT probe range, so large diameter probes now have amuch better dierential channel than beore.

    exciter

Wear scars, erosion, and wall loss are detected on both sides othe support plates by the absolute channel.Large deect detected rom absolute channel on both sides o support

    Absolute coil

Dual-exciter probes can detect pits on both sides o support plate,as there is always one exciter to supply energy to the pickup coils

Absolute channel ismore dicult to interpretas there are 3 signals(instead o 2 or a singleexciter) rom a deect.

Dual Pickup (TRT series) Used when deects are expected at the tubesheet location 4 channels: lead set (ABSL/DIFF) and trail set (ABSL/DIFF) Combines advantages o both single- and dual-exciter models Data analysis is longer and requires experienced users

The dual-pickup probe acts as two single-exciter probes in oneprobe casing, thus combining the excellent wall-loss response othe absolute channel and the capability o the dual-exciter modelto detect pits on each side o the support plate. This makes thedual-pickup model ideal or inspecting at both tubesheets.

These probes require experienced operators as there are 4 chan-nels to analyze, in addition to a delay between the lead and trailchannel sets.

Oversized DiametersProbe diameters ranging rom 9 mm (0.35 in.) to 26 mm (1.02 in.)are built with a protective stainless steel casing. Larger probediameters up to 50 mm (1.97 in.) are built using a tough and light-weight one piece plastic design. This design also includes stainlesssteel wear rings on each end, in addition to a sturdy probe cableto endure multiple probe pulls. Coils are potted (in black on pic-ture) or maximum protection. TRX-370-300-N20

Near Field Technique (NFT)The near feld testing (NFT) eddy current technology is a rapid andinexpensive inspection solution designed specifcally or ID deectdetection in carbon steel fn-an tubes. NFT probes reduce costand improve ease o use because they do not require expensiveand cumbersome externally reerenced coils.

Near feld probes are an excellent alternative to magnetic uxleakage (MFL) probes. This new technology, which is based on asimple eddy current exciter/pickup design, produces signals thatare very easy to analyze. Because NFT probes operate within thesame requency range as remote feld testing (RFT) probes, NFT

probes are manuactured to be used with the standard Multi-Scan MS 5800 RFT connector. In addition, there is no magnet, making probe pushing and pulling a lot easier.

Features Ideal or carbon steel fn-an tubes Excellent alternative to MFL probes No need or a reerence probe or extension Excellent detection o internal thinning and pitting based on

sensitivity o eddy current to lit-o (or fll-actor) 2 channels: absolute (ABSL) and dierential (DIFF) High-quality, amplitude-based signals or very ast and simple

data analysis Thick probe casing or increased durability

Compatible with the MultiScan MS 5800R Compatible with competitor equipment with help o Reverse

Probe Adaptors Improved signal clarity on pittingmarket leader

NOTE: These probes are not designed to detect OD deects.

The absolute channel easily detects internalvolumetric deects such as corrosion, erosion, and wall thinning. The damageseverity can be evaluated by analyzing thesignals amplitude only.

While pit clusters can be detected with theabsolute channel, the dierential channelbetter detects more localized deects, suchas individual pits, with a much greatersignal clarity than with competitor probes.
