Summary
What is Mobile Broadband?
Mobile Broadband is the name used to describe the 3G services which are made possible by HSDPA and HSUPA, the latest technologies on the evolutionary path. HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) enables mobile users to download data at speeds of up to 3.45 Mbit/s. HSUPA (High Speed Uplink Packet Access) enables mobile users to upload data at speeds of up to 1.76 Mbit/s. Source: Wikipedia
Mobile broadband is defined as broadband access (e.g. cable and DSL) in the cellular environment. Source: Virginia Tech University
Mobile broadband refers to any wireless technology that enables high-speed Internet access in a public environment, via laptop, PDA, smartphone or other device. Today, mobile broadband technologies include Wi-Fi (used at hotspots and in most municipal networks), WiMAX (in its early stages), and 3G (used by many cell phones and some PCs for Internet access). Wireless Stats in the US Year End 2007
• U.S. wireless penetration reaches 84%• U.S. subscribers totaled 255.4 million• Overall revenue was up 10.7% on the year to
$138.9 billion• Data revenue jumped 53% to $23 billion • Voice and data minutes totaled 2 trillion• Wireless customers in the U.S. sent 50 billion text
messages in December 2007, with multimedia messaging totaling 4 billion in the second half of the year

Future of Mobile Broadband: Is there a ‘4G’?Summary
What is 4G? (IMT-Advanced)
Not yet defined by the standards bodies
Requirements expected in 2008
Premature to call any current technology “4G”
It is expected that end-to-end IP and high- quality streaming video will be distinguishing
features of 4G.
• Globally deployed base of 200+ networks
• System upgrade
• Cost efficient
• Backwards compatible
• Extensive ecosystem• Will deliver up to 42
Mbps
HSPA+ Benefits
HSPA+ Evolution Objectives
3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE)
• Utilizes OFDMA technology• Operation in both FDD and TDD modes• Spectral efficiency• Vendor agreements on IPR• Reduced latency
LTE Advantages
“Without a doubt the operator community is rallying behind LTE, and there might be an opportunity to finally converge to a
single standard,” says analyst Chetan Sharma.*

EV-DO UMB
“UMB is expected to go commercial in mid-2009, but none of the carriers has announced plans to
test or deploy the technology,”according to ABI Research analyst Nadine Manjaro.
