Advance Seed Continues to Innovate New seed blends for livestock farmers change the face of pasture seeding for good In order to ensure the nutritional enhancement and quality of grasses for improved beef, sheep and horse herds, Advance Seed is pleased to announce the launch of its new Prime Beef Blend, Sheep Blend and Horse Blend grass mixes. BEEF BLEND The Advance Seed Prime Beef Blend grass mix combines four varieties of grasses and legumes. This ensures that, to some extent, the nutritional and dietary requirements of herds of cattle are met with a single sowing. Now farmers can plant a number of fields and then rotate herds between these. The Prime Beef Blend is suitable for production under both dry land and irrigation environments. It should ideally be planted between September and March in a subtropical climate and requires a minimum of 400mm moisture or rainfall per annum. Preferable seeding rate for fertile soils, for both row and broadcasting is 10kg per hectare, row width in this case should be between 30cm and 90cm. Where rainfall is less than 400mm per annum you provide supplementary irrigation and row widths should be 90cm. HORSE BLEND The Advance Seed Horse Blend meets the delicate nutritional needs of horses. The grass is best planted between September and March, thrives in a sub- tropical climate, requires about 400mm of rainfall per annum and is best suited to light clay loam type soils. The seed- ing rate for row and broadcast planting is recommended at 10kg per hectare and a broadcast of 10kg per hectare. Where pressure from weeds is significant establishing the pasture in rows is pre- ferred and advised. The pasture will also thrive in drier regions where less than 400mm annual rainfall occurs as long as supplementary irrigation is provided. SHEEP BLEND The Advance Seed Sheep Blend lets sheep farmers take advantage of a pas- ture that is packed with the natural goodness that will result in healthier, The seeds in the Beef, Sheep and Horse Blends have been coated with an AGRICOTE coating, containing nutrients and growth stimulants to aid in the establishment of young germinating seedlings. Issue 2 AUTUMN 2012 better fed and better quality sheep. Grass mixes are available in two varieties, catering for the different climatic needs of farmers in Central and eastern South Africa as well as in the West. Both blends are made up of four different indigenous pasture grasses and a legume, both blends are also suitable for dry as well as irrigated land production and offer equal nutritional benefits; they differ slightly to accommodate regional farming requirements. While both blends are slightly different, the planting requirements are the same and grasses are best seeded between Septem- ber and March, are best suited to a subtropical climate with a minimum moisture requirement of 400mm of rainfall per annum. Row planting requirements as well as broadcasting seeding rates are recommended at 10kg per hectare. We advise that if you are in a region where rainfall is less than 400mm per annum and where supplementary irrigation is not possible, that you plant the blend suited to the western region. In these drier areas where rainfall is erratic we would also suggest that you establish your pasture in 90cm rows. www.advanceseed.com Click Here For A Healthier Lifestyle Pouyoukas Foods has gone live with its one-stop portal for healthy eating. Are you trying to cut carbs, lower the GI (Glycaemic Index) of your menu, find a gluten-free alternative to traditional carbs or are you just plain bored with rice and pasta? Then it’s time you try quinoa. Pronounced KEEN-wah, quinoa is a leafy, spinach-like crop that is cultivated mostly for its edible seeds. Archaeologi-cal evidence suggests that as far back as 3000 BC, these seeds formed an integral part of the diet of the ancient Andeans of South America. The Incas called it chisaya mama or ‘mother of all grains’. Quinoa has a balanced set of essen-tial amino acids, making it a complete protein. It’s also a good source of dietary fibre, is naturally low in cholesterol and sodium, as well as being a good source of iron, magnesium and phosphorous, and an excellent source of manganese. If its obvious nutritional value isn’t suf-

ficient to have you reaching for quinoa at the grocery store, then consider its deli-cious flavour and many uses. Quinoa has a mild, slightly nutty flavour and a soft fluffy texture when cooked. It is similar to rice and indeed is often used as a rice substitute, yet has a protein content of 12 – 18%. Quinoa works equally well as a side dish, or when added to hot cas-seroles, soups, stews and stir fries, and even as a delicious alternative to porridge, served with a splash of honey. In addition, while quinoa can be added raw to salads and other cold foods, you can also sprout or germinate the seeds to soften them and increase their palatability and taste for this purpose. Moreover, by germinating the seeds you increase their nutritional value, as this process activates their natural enzymes and multiplies their vitamin content.

To substitute it for rice, simply cook it exactly as you would rice. It’s no more or less difficult than that. To cook it on the stove, simply add two cups of water to every cup of quinoa, bring it to a boil in a covered pot, then lower the temperature and simmer for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring only occasionally. Quinoa can be found at most major supermarkets, it’s available in two sizes, 250g and 500g and is certified Kosher, Halaal, Low GI and Gluten Free and is also approved by the Heart Foundation.

Wintergreen, from Advance Seed offers a green lawn all year round and is avail-able in two varieties, Wintergreen and Wintergreen Pro, the first is a ryegrass based cool season grass and the second a bluegrass variety. Both are used as a winter over-seeder and when established provide a fine textured, shiny and hardwearing green lawn during the winter months. The winter lawn needs to be established in autumn by sowing the seed over an existing lawn after suitable preparation. The grass will grow until the temperatures increase in spring and the normal warm season grasses emerge from their dormant period. Wintergreen is an affordable pre-pack-aged product now available on the mar-ket catering for the average home owner. Visit www.advanceseed.com for a full range of grasses to meet your environ-mental and climatic needs or call 0861 AGRICOTE for more information.

it is time to overseed! green your lawn all year round

The first question we are always asked when people are considering overseed-ing is: “When is the best time to do so?”. Overseeding is always best done in the spring and autumn months. Why overseeding? It is a fantastic way to encourage existing lawn to grow in the off-season, allowing for the primary turf to remain dormant in this time, while the overseeded, or secondary lawn can take hold in these months. Autumn overseeding is ideal for the South African climate, where our warm summer grasses go dormant in the colder climates and where the hardier and climatic appropriate seeds in an overseeder, really take to ground.

Before overseeding always:• Mow the grass as short as your lawnmower will allow you to, cutting it almost ball is as appropriate.• If you have the time and the tools then it is a good idea to aerate the lawn, as this improves oxygenation to encourage new growth.

Once seeded:• Dress the area with compost or a good topsoil, or both.• Water the grass thoroughly with about 3cm ofwater (if possible)

How to Achieve Even Seed CoverageOnce you have completed the above calibrate your spreader to drop seeds at the same pace at which you walk. Fill your spreader with only half of the seed and walk in a single direction. Then fill the spreader with the remainder of the seed and walk perpendicular to the previous directions.Once completed use a top dressing with a light compost mix to spread across the top of the grass, just lightly dust the seeds, this will help to ensure that all moisture is retained.Once you have completed your over-seeding try and ensure you keep foot traffic to a bare minimum until the seeds have germinated, allow the seeds to nearly dry before watering again. Once germinated to can change your watering schedule less frequent.

It is time to get off the treadmill of unhealthy eating and take charge of your relationship with food for once and for all. New Year’s resolutions fail and Monday never comes. So when should you start a new eating programme? When you’re ready, if that’s in the middle of a doughnut or on a Tuesday night. Make the moment of your epiphany your starting point. To succeed in changing your eating habits for good, you need to define then redefine your relationship with food, making you the master and food your servant. We live in times of abundance and have the luxury of eating for reasons besides survival; like stress, emotions,

boredom, loneliness or simply because the food is there. Be honest about why you eat and use your answers to map out your relationship with food and in so doing change this relationship. An eating plan is para-mount to a well-balanced diet. This doesn’t have to be detailed to the half gram and quarter calorie. Instead, spend a few

minutes each night to consider what you’ll eat tomorrow. Don’t shop when you’re hungry, if you do your trolley contents double and usually include a load of unhealthy foods. Make shopping a conscientious exer-cise, where you plan ahead and choose healthy snacks like nuts and legumes over deep fried snacks, opt for fresh over processed carbohydrates and choose natural grains like rice and couscous instead of processed and refined ones. Read the packaging. Take advantage of the new refreshingly honest packaging information, to examine food contents and eliminate those that are high in refined sugars, bad fats, colourants and preservatives and replace them with products rich in proteins and energy. Snacking is another dietary minefield. If you’re a parent and find that eating your kids’ snacks is your dietary downfall, consider that you feed them the same junk that created your eating habits. Offer them fresh or dried fruit, low fat or fat-free yoghurt, raw nuts, low GI carbohydrate snacks or baked pretzels on a regular basis and unhealthy snacks, less often. Small adjustments early on can influence their relationship with food forever and

keep temptation out of your pantry. Manage your por-tion size, healthy foods are much more filling than unhealthy foods. So managing portion size becomes easier when you opt for low GI unrefined carbohydrates and legumes like beans, lentils and chickpeas and fill up on extra veggies and salad. It’s not just what you eat that will change your relationship with food, but also eating when your body needs it most. Most dieticians advise that you stick to a minimum of three main meals per day, with a small snack in between, as is the imperative of eating breakfast in order to kickstart your metabolism. To secure your success share your goals with your loved ones and enlist their support on your journey. Having people rooting for you makes the world of difference to your motivation and commit-ment alike, and you may be surprised by how many of them want to come along for the ride!
