Reflections from the 2011 Off-campus Housing Fair
On March 23, over 700 students made their way to the third floor of the University
Center to visit over 30 off-campus housing related vendors. Students were greeted by Off-
Campus Housing Fair volunteers and given a bag of goodies before they entered the fair.
As students walked around the UC Ballroom, they were able to find out about local apart-
ment prices and amenities, the latest deals with cable and utilities, and how to navigate the
Off-Campus Housing website. Even Pouncer stopped by to join in on the fun. As students
departed the fair, to their surprise they got free lunch! Each student received a slice of pizza
and a drink for visiting the fair.
Adult and Commuter Student Services appreciates everyone who visited the fair. If
you need more information on Off-Campus Housing options visit the Off-Campus Housing
website at www.memphis.edu/offcampushousing

The semester is winding
down and final exams are draw-
ing near. I hope the semester has
been a successful one for you
and you have accomplished your
academic and personal short
term goals.
Summer is just around the corner which means
you may be looking for summer employment or intern-
ships. In this edition of the newsletter, we have provided
you with some things to remember as you enter the sum-
mer job market.
While you are job-hunting, you may be looking
for an apartment as well. That’s why in this month’s
newsletter we wanted to give you an “Off-Campus Hous-
ing Fair” recap. The event offered a variety of housing
vendors, food and fun. For the first time our mascot,
Pouncer, stopped by and warmed the hearts of the ven-
dors, students, faculty and staff. Thanks to all who came
out and supported the event. It could not have been a suc-
cess without you.
Adult and Commuter Student Services will close
out our spring semester with one last special event, the
Pinnacle Honor Society induction ceremony. On April
15, we will honor all of our spring 2011 inductees. Please
look for our congratulatory message to our Pinnacle in-
ductees in an upcoming edition of The Daily Helmsman.
In closing, I would just like to wish you luck on
your exams and a triumphant end to the semester. Re-
member you are dreamers, thinkers and doers, and what-
ever you seek to accomplish can happen with hard work
and a positive attitude.
Sincerely,
Joy Stout
How to Land a Great Summer Job School is almost out for summer meaning opportunities to go to summer school and land a great summer job as well.
Whether you are looking for an internship or part-time work, here are a few tips to get you started on your search.
DO YOUR RESEARCH. Determine what kind of summer
gig you would like to land and then use the internet to find
those kind of jobs in your area. Visit job search sites such as
indeed.com and hotjobs.com.
SPRUCE UP YOUR RESUME. You can’t land your next
job without a resume explaining your qualifications. If you
need help polishing your resume visit Career Services. They
also offer a bunch of tips on their website at
www.memphis.edu/careerservices/studentguide/resume.php.
SECURE REFERENCES. Most employers like a list of
references to learn more about you. Make sure to find refer-
ences who can speak eloquently about your background and
career experience. Also whenever you name one of your
references on a job application, let your reference know so
they can be prepared to speak on your behalf if contacted.
GO GET THE JOB. Don’t sit behind a computer screen
and expect a job to come to you, get out and go get it. Visit
the malls or businesses you would like to work at in person.
Find out if they are hiring, ask to speak to the manager, and
then give the manager a two minute spill on why they
should hire you.
FOLLOW UP. Sometimes you won’t land the job right
there on the spot, however, it doesn’t mean the company is
not interested. Take time to give the hiring manager a call to
see if they have had time to review your application. Often
you’ll find they are still looking at potential applicants.
STAY MOTIVATED. Finding a summer job can be time
consuming but it’s worth it when you land the job of your
dreams. Keep doing your research and applying until you
land your gig.

APRIL 2011
As the sun lights up the Univer-
sity of Memphis campus on a beautiful
spring day, Dr. Bingham gracefully walks
across the courtyard to visit students at
the ACSS Off-Campus Housing Fair in
the university center.
The same sunlight that radiated
outdoors now beams indoors because of
Dr. Bingham’s energetic disposition. The
vice president of student affairs, enjoys
every opportunity she has to interact with
students during her very busy days.
“It’s a part of my job to maintain
good relationships with as many people as
I can including the staff, the students, the
faculty and visitors to campus,” Bingham
said. “Events like the off-campus housing
fair give me an opportunity to get out of
the office and say hello to some students
and show my genuine support.”
For Dr. Bingham providing sup-
port and promoting student engagement
goes far beyond a typical nine to five
work day, so when Dr. Bingham was
approached about being the keynote
speaker for the U of M’s Pinnacle Non-
traditional Student Honor Society cere-
mony, she accepted.
“We need to tell students these
are things they can become engaged in,”
Dr. Bingham said. “Adult students, in
particular, need the engagement because
they think they are very different from
anyone else on campus, but there are a lot
of [adult students] around campus they
can learn from and develop friendships
with that will enrich their lives.”
Pinnacle Honor Society honors
non-traditional students who have
achieved substantial academic excellence
while matriculat-
ing at the univer-
sity level. Mem-
bership in the Pin-
nacle Honor Soci-
ety is also coupled
with membership
in the University
of Memphis’ Adult Student Association,
which is another way for non-traditional
students to take advantage of the engage-
ment opportunities Dr. Bingham champi-
ons.
“When you are a part of some-
thing, you are most likely to graduate,”
Dr. Bingham said. “In addition, to having
a good time, I want students to learn how
to interact well in a diverse society. This
will lead students to becoming more suc-
cessful than they ever imagined.”
THE SPOTLIGHT
Pinnacle Honor Society Honors Great Students
Dr. Rosie Bingham
Deidre Ross, Senior studying Middle School
Education
<< I consider it an honor to be part of the Pinna-
cle Honor Society. I have worked diligently to
prove to my five sons that hard work is always
rewarded. Being included in Pinnacle is one way
to help me teach that lesson to my children.
I look forward to the recognition of hard work that
being included in Pinnacle provides, and I hope to
find a place in the ASA to help support other adults
who are returning to school.
Jesse Brents, Graduate Student
studying Accounting
<< It is a great honor to be in-
ducted into the fastest growing non-
traditional honor society in the
country. I was interested to learn
that at most universities, even the
best non-traditional students had a
difficult time being accepted for
membership in the "traditional"
honorary societies, represented on
the nation's campuses and that some
campuses reported that no adult
student had ever been accepted for
membership in the traditional hon-
oraries. I am hoping to see Pinnacle
succeed in changing institutional or
local policies to benefit adult stu-
dents and in making life a little bit
better or easier for non-traditional
students.
Clay Fowler, Graduate Student studying MAT in Art Education
<< To be a part of the Pinnacle Honor Society gives me a sense of satisfaction
for the hard work that goes into completing an advanced degree program. I
am planning on attending the April 15th event with my wife. Since I am work-
ing full time teaching art with the Memphis City Schools and working hard to
complete a masters in the evenings, she has played a vital role in keeping our
household and family as sane as possible. I am really looking forward to her
being able to share in the experience.
ACSS is very proud of each student who will be inducted into the Pinnacle Honor Society on April 15 at 6pm in the UC. To find out
what the event means to our students, we spoke to a few new inductees.
Special thanks to these Pinnacle Honor Society students who were willing to share their story.

<< I liked that people really wanted to
answer my questions. Also I thought the
ACSS did a great job of letting commuter
students know the housing fair was going
to happen. ~Dominique Echols, Junior << I already have my own place,
but the fair was still informative
for me. MLGW & Comcast helped
me understand why I was spend-
ing so much services and how I
could spend less. ~Shane Perkins,
Alumni of the U of M
<< I liked the different apartment choices with varying
price ranges. It seemed to be something for everyone at
the fair. ~ Akilah Miles, Graduate Student
