Comprehension 2

Many chemical and biological processes depend on osmosis, the selective passage of solvent molecules through porous membrane from a dilute solution to a more concentrated one. The osmotic pressure depends on molar concentration of the solution . If two solutions are of equal solute concentration and, hence, have the same osmotic pressure, they are said to be isotonic. If two solutions are of unequal osmotic pressure, the more concentrated solution is said to be hypertonic and the more diluted solution is described as hypotonic.

Osmosis is the major mechanism for transporting water upward in the plants. Transpiration in the leaves supports the transport mechanism of water. The osmotic pressure of sea water is about 30 atm; this is the pressure that must be applied to the sea water (separated from pure water using semi permeable membrane) to get drinking water.

13. A plant cell shrinks when it is kept in:

(a) hypotonic solution

(b) hypertonic solution

(c) isotonic solution

(d) pure water

14. Isotonic solutions have same:

(a) density(b) molarity(c) molality(d) mole fraction

15. Glucose solution to be injected into the bloodstream must have same .. as that of the bloodstream:

(a) molality(b) vapour pressure(c) osmotic pressure (d) viscosity

Assertion and Reasoning

Directions: The questions (16 18) given below consists of STATEMENT 1 and STATEMENT 2. Use the following key to choose the appropriate answer.

(a) Both STATEMENT 1 and STATEMENT 2 are true and STATEMENT 2 is correct explanation of STATEMENT 1

(b) Both STATEMENT 1 and STATEMENT 2 are true but STATEMENT 2 is not correct explanation of STATEMENT 1.

(c) STATEMENT 1 is true, STATEMENT 2 is false.

(d) STATEMENT 1 is false, STATEMENT 2 is true.

16. STATEMENT 1:0.1 M solution of NaCl has greater osmotic pressure than 0.1 M solution of glucose at same temperature.

STATEMENT 2:In solution, NaCl dissociates to produce more number of particles.

17. STATEMENT 1:If standard reduction potential for the reaction is 0.80 volts then for the reaction it will be 2.4 volts

STATEMENT 2: If conc is increased reduction electrode potential is increased

18. STATEMENT 1: is diamagnetic in nature and tetrahedral

STATEMENT 2: Ni-atom undergoes hybridization

Numerical

N1.1.22g of non volatile , non electrolyte solute (X) is dissolved in 100g benzene and elevation of boiling point for this solution was found to be 0.13 K. Find the mol. wt of (X) if Kb for benzene is 2.6 kg K mol-1

N2.

Observation -1: on heating, gives nitrogen gas and a green residue

Observation- 2: To a nitrate solution ferrous sulphate solution is added, precipitate if any is filtered off and concentrated is poured along the sides. A dark brown ring is obtained at the junction of the two liquids.

Observation- 3: When is passed through mercury, it loses it meniscus and sticks to glass. This phenomenon of mercury sticking to glass is called tailing of mercury.

Find out the sum of molecular masses of green residue in Observation-1, complex ion causing the brown ring in Observation -2 and the compound responsible for tailing of mercury in Observation- 3 (Atomic mass of Hg = 200).
