Blwyddyn / Year Adroddiad Blynyddol / Annual Report 1937-38 Disgrifiad / Description The late Professor Morgan Lewis left a memorandum in which he expressed a wish that the National Library should be allowed to select from his library any manuscripts, books and periodicals which it required. Although the memorandum was not a legal document, His Honour Judge Lloyd Morgan, acting on behalf of the executors, has given effect to it (NLW MSS 11614-97). The manuscripts include sermons written by the testator, 1868-1932, by his father, Rev Evan Lewis, Brynberian, 1837-40 (NLW MSS 11658-60A); by Rev David Rees, Llanelly, 1824-7 (NLW MSS 11677-87), and by Rev Simon Evans, 1852-4, 1873-6; lists of baptisms, marriages, burials and members at Hebron, Penygroes, and Nebo chapels during Simon Evans's pastorates, 1843-85; manuscripts of Rev J. Lloyd James, 'Clwydwenfro', including an album compiled by him relating mainly to the affairs of Glandwr Church, Pembrokeshire, and especially to the ministry and other activities of Rev John Davies, 'Shon Gymro'; and a translation of Canwyll y Cymry into English by 'Clwydwenfro'. The books number approximately 881 volumes. Many of them are duplicates, and Judge Lloyd Morgan was quite willing that these volumes should be used for loan purposes in connection with tutorial and other extra-mural classes. The collection contains a large number of hymn books--Welsh, English, German, etc.,--and also many volumes of Welsh periodicals, but, as Professor Morgan Lewis expressed a wish that as many as possible of the latter should be presented to the Congregational Union Library, Swansea, only those volumes and parts of which copies were not already in the National Library were selected (Dept of Printed Books). There are also a number of Ordnance Survey maps and other maps and plans of places in Great Britain, a scrapbook containing engravings of views in England and Wales, miscellaneous prints and portraits of ministers and others (Dept of Pictures and Maps). Mynegai Brynberian (Nyfer), Llanelli, Pen-y-groes (Llanllyfni), Sir Benfro, Abertawe.

`THE PRINCES OF WALES OF THE BLOOD ROYAL OF ENGLAND' 1938003 Ffynhonnell / Source His Majesty the King. Blwyddyn / Year Adroddiad Blynyddol / Annual Report 1937-38 Disgrifiad / Description As a memento of the Royal Visit of July 15, 1937, His Majesty the King has been graciously pleased to present to the Library a manuscript volume entitled:- ' The/Princes of Wales/of the Blood Royal of/England with Their Armorial Ensigns/ deduced from MCCLXXXIV to/His Royal Highness/George-Augustus Frederick/prince of Wales/Regent/of the United Kingdom of/Great Britain and Ireland/MDCCCXI (NLW MS 12352C). It is the work of Sir George Nayler (? 1764-1831), York Herald and Genealogist of the Bath, who subsequently became Clarenceux king-of-arms and Garter king-of-arms, and who undertook a 'History of the Coronation of King George IV', although he did not live to complete more than the two parts which were published in 1824 at the price of twelve guineas each. (See Dictionary of National Biography, Vol. XL, pp. 129-130.) The manuscript, which is finely executed on vellum, consists of brief biographical sketches of sixteen Princes of Wales, beginning with Edward of Caernarvon (afterwards Edward II) and ending with George Augustus Frederick (afterwards George IV). On the leaf following each sketch is the coat of arms, emblazoned in tinctures, of the Prince of Wales to whom the preceding text relates. On the leaves immediately following the coat of arms of Edward, the Black Prince, are illuminated drawings of his tomb in Canterbury Cathedral and of the Prince of Wales's crest,-- three ostrich feathers with the motto 'Ich Dien'. Edward, the son of Henry VIII, who afterwards became Edward VI, has been omitted from the series. A sheet of paper of later date than the manuscript, on which biographical data relating to him have been written, is loose in the volume. The binding is of red Levant morocco, with 'dull gilt' edges. It is decorated on the front with a shield inlaid in black on which are superimposed the Prince of Wales's feathers inlaid in white and outlined and feathered in gold, and which is surrounded by a design, in blind and gold, copied from that on the tomb of the Black Prince in Canterbury Cathedral. The same design, without the shield and feathers, is repeated on the back. On the spine are one-line panels and lettering in gold, while the inside borders are also of one-line panels in gold. His Majesty the King has autographed the volume on the first fly-leaf--'George R.I. July 15th, 1937'. Mynegai Caernarfon, Caergaint. Two printed works by Eleazar Roberts, one being a series of lessons in Welsh on the Tonic Sol-fa system of John Curwen (Dept of Printed Books). Eleazar Roberts probably did more than anyone to popularize this system in Wales. The other book, Hymnau a thonau at wasanaeth yr ysgol Sabbothol, was published in parts. A large number of editions of Part I was published, the first by John Childs, Bungay, in 1861. Subsequent editions, up to and including the eighth, were published in Liverpool by the author. From the ninth edition the work was published by Hughes and Son, Wrexham. Mr Roberts has presented copies of six editions of this part as well as various editions of Parts 2, 4 and 5. Disgrifiad / Description THE PENNANT COLLECTION (NLW MSS 12706-20). This collection of books, manuscripts and drawings was acquired in July 1938, when the noted library from Newnham Paddox, Warwickshire, was sold at Christie's Salerooms, London. Until the middle of the last century it was at Downing Hall, Flintshire, Thomas Pennant's old home, but on the marriage of his grand-daughter, Louise, to the seventh Earl of Denbigh, it was transferred to the Newnham Paddox library. It is appropriate that at least a part of this valuable collection should have been acquired by the National Library of Wales; here it will be preserved for ever in the country which was Pennant's native land, and which he loved so much. Moreover, the items supplement and augment a considerable body of material associated with Pennant which was already in the Library, including eighty-three volumes of manuscripts obtained when some of the contents of Downing Hall were sold in 1913, papers belonging to his son David, several extra-illustrated copies of his works, and a set of over 200 water colour drawings done to his commission by John Ingleby. The interest of the present collection lies chiefly in two unpublished works in manuscript; in a volume which has been lettered Pennant's Literary Life, but which actually contains much more than this, for it is a miscellany of manuscripts, printed items and drawings; and in many extra-illustrated copies of Pennant's published works. For the most part these illustrations are original drawings in water colour. Only a few are signed, but there is little doubt that the artist responsible for most of them was Moses Griffith. Of this entirely self-taught Welsh artist, whose services he almost monopolised, Pennant writes as follows:- 'In the spring of this year I acquired that treasure, Moses Griffith, born April 6th, 1749, at Trygainhouse [Trygarn], in the parish of Bryn Groer [Bryncroes], in Llein [Lleyn], in Caernarvonshire, descended from very poor parents, and without any other instruction than that of reading and writing. He early took to the use of his pencil, and, during his long service with me, has distinguished himself as a good and faithful servant, and able artist; he can engrave, and he is tolerably skilled in music. He accompanied me in all my journies, except that of the present year [1769]. The public may thank him for numberless scenes and antiquities, which would otherwise have remained probably for ever concealed.' In the volume of miscellanies mentioned above there are two self-portraits of Moses Griffith, both in water colour. The later (and better) one is included as an illustration in this Report. Apart from the original drawings there are very many extra engravings, the subjects varying from natural history to portraits or topographical scenes according to the text of the book. Still further interest is given to the volumes by the many manuscript additions and insertions, all of which are mentioned in the list which follows. PLAS YOLYN 1938088 Blwyddyn / Year Adroddiad Blynyddol / Annual Report 1937-38 Disgrifiad / Description THE PLAS YOLYN PAPERS AND DOCUMENTS, including manuscripts and papers of Morgan Lloyd ('Morgan Llwyd o Wynedd') and Colonel John Jones, Maesygarnedd (NLW MSS 11430-81). The most interesting single manuscript relating to Morgan Lloyd is probably the original manuscript of his tract Gwaedd ynghymru yn wyneb pob cydwybod, which was thought to have been printed either in Dublin or in London about 1655 (NLW MS 11430B). No copy of the first edition is known to have survived, and as this manuscript, along with letters in the collection, seems to prove that the tract was printed in Dublin, it has a bibliographical value in addition to its autograph value. There are also drafts of other works projected by Morgan Lloyd, e.g. a dialogue between an old man and a child concerning the Bible and other religious books read by the child (NLW MS 11431B), a tract called 'Y Llyfr Bychan' based on Revelation x (NLW MS 11432D), and another entitled 'Dim iw henw y llyfr '(NLW MS 11432D), together with poems, draft translations of the Psalms into Welsh, notes on the preface to A Word for God (published by Vavasor Powell and his followers in 1655) which show Morgan Lloyd's attitude towards Cromwell at this time, a draft statement on the Fifth Monarchy men, and copies and drafts of letters addressed to Lloyd by friends in North Wales and in London, including Peter Sterry, H. Jessey, Vavasor Powell, Roger Sontley, Hugh Courtney, Colonel John Jones, Hugh Pritchard, Philip Rogers, William Rider and Walter Thimelton (NLW MSS 11433-4B, 11435-6D, 11437B, 11438-9D). The manuscripts of Colonel John Jones include a letter book in which copies of his correspondence from Ireland between 1651 and 1660 are entered (NLW MS 11440D). Some of these letters were printed by Joseph Mayer in the Transactions of the Historical Society of Lancashire and Cheshire, 1861. There is also a Welsh letter from Colonel John Jones to his brother Richard, together with letters to Mrs Anne Lloyd, wife of Morgan Lloyd, documents relating to the war in Ireland where Colonel Jones was stationed during the Protectorate, and petitions (with papers relating thereto) made by him for grants of Irish lands. Among other Civil War papers connected with Colonel Jones are some relating to the proceedings of the Committee for Compounding in connexion with the estates of Dr William Lewis of Bronyfoel, which were purchased by Humphrey Jones, the Colonel's brother.

The link that connects the papers of Morgan Lloyd and Colonel John Jones with the family papers of the Morrall family of Plas Yolyn and Cilhendre was John Jones, the Colonel's son by his first wife, Margaret, daughter of John Edwards of Stansty. John Jones lived for some years at Bryn y Ffynnon in Wrexham, where Morgan Lloyd had previously resided, and he spent the later years of his life with his cousins, the Edwards family of Cilhendre, to whose estates the Morrall family succeeded in about 1730. John Jones married Mary, [? step-] daughter of Humphrey Jones, his father's brother. He was sheriff of Merioneth in 1689-90, under the name of John Jones of Mowddwy. He appears to have been the same person as John Jones of Uwchlaw'rcoed, who was appointed sheriff of Merioneth in December 1687, to be succeeded in a few days by Sir Robert Owen of Glyn and Porkington. This collection contains a large number of letters by and to him, letters by his uncle and father-in-law, Humphrey Jones, letters by and to Mary his wife, by Katherine Jones (nee Cromwell), widow of his father, Colonel John Jones, and by Jonathan Edwards, Archdeacon of Londonderry, Sir William Williams of Glasgoed, and others. The remainder of the collection is composed of the correspondence of the families of Edwards and Morrall and their friends and kinsmen, and a small group of papers relating to the Hanmer family (NLW MS 11462D). The last-named includes documents relating to the part played by William Hanmer of Fennes in the Civil War, and a travel journal of Thomas Hanmer, 1728. In addition to the papers there are 425 deeds ranging in date from 1282 to 1869 and relating to properties in Aldeley, Brymbo, Cymmer, Dudleston, Erbistock, Gresford, Gwersyllt, Iscoed, Llanbedr, Llanenddwyn, Llanddwywe, Llanfair, Llangar, Nanheudwy, Oswestry, Overton, Parseithydd, Ruabon, and Wrexham in cos. Denbigh, Flint, Merioneth and Salop, and to properties in London, Oxfordshire and Wiltshire.
