‘Stronger Together’

Cwmbran High School is an English Medium School in Torfaen County Borough Council. Our aim is to continue to develop Cwmbran High School into a high achieving, academic school. We are establishing a culture of high expectations, challenging targets and ambitious goals for every pupil. The outcome of these improvements will give our pupils the best skills and qualifications they can possibly achieve to improve their life chances.

Pupils, parents / carers, staff and governors are prepared to raise their expectations and drive standards up. Achievements in the classroom are matched by success in a very wide range of other areas. Pupils have the opportunity to participate in Music and Drama, with a School Production, and choral and orchestral performances. Team activities are a strength in all major sports with clubs at lunchtime and after school encouraging still wider participation. The Sports Academy continues to give our school a distinctive identity and profile within the community. There is a wide range of extra curricular opportunities including Charity Work, Clubs and a wide variety of school visits / trips. A further breakdown of achievements is provided within this report.

Attendance Information

2016 / 2017

93.5% was the target set for 2016 – 2017. 93.2% attendance was achieved. The

recommendation for 2017 – 2018 is to set the overall target as 93.7%, with the unauthor-

ised attendance target set at 0.74%. This has been agreed the by the Governing Body

and Local Authority.

All Policies & Procedures are reviewed by the Governing Body when required. School Strategies are reflected in our Policies & Procedures and Post Inspection Action Plan.

Premises

The tennis court have been refurbished to provide a new multi-use games area. The food tech room has been refurbished to provide a state of the art food tech-

nology teaching area. The lower school roof has been renewed.

Use of the Welsh Language All of our teaching is in English, but we try to use Welsh as much as possible to encour-age bilingualism and to increase the employability of our pupils. The Cwricwlwm Cymreig forms part of the work of all curriculum areas.

Welsh Phrase of the Week A ‘Welsh Phrase of the Week’ is printed in our weekly staff Bulletin for staff to use with pupils at every given opportunity. This is closely linked with our ‘Thought for the Day’ programme used during Assemblies and Registration Periods.

Healthy School Initiative

We encourage a whole school community approach to food and fitness. The Head-teacher, Staff and Governing Body ensure that food provided in school, and advice given to pupils, promotes a healthy and active lifestyle. We are committed to providing high quality PE lessons and health related exercise, and we work in partnership with Healthy Schools, Hearty Lives Programme, PESS, 5x60 and other Community Sports organisations. The school takes every opportunity to encourage fitness and wellbeing by incorporating a number of the above programmes in our Health and Wellbeing Day (Sports Day) each year. Healthy School Objectives:

To promote pupil participation and decision making in all aspects of food and fitness activities.

To ensure that activities related to food and fitness, provided for pupils through-out the day, are consistent with curriculum guidance and Welsh Government regulations.

To work in partnership with School Meal Providers, to ensure that consistent messages about nutritional standards and healthy lifestyles are given to our pupils.

To offer a broad range of safe, stimulating indoor and outdoor sports, play and recreational activities.

Community Links & Pupil Engagement

Families First We have a growing number of pupils and families supported by this organisation which promotes the development of personal skills and allows access for work with counsellors and education psychology.

Communities First Communities First provide a target group of Key Stage 3 pupils with personal development skills, most specifically dealing with conflict and self-esteem.

CHS Deaf Choir Performances Cwmbran High School Deaf Choir have continued to perform throughout the academic year. Last November they performed on the pitch during the pre-game celebrations for the Wales v Australia rugby game at the Principality Stadium. After their popularity with Aneurin Bevan Health Board events last year they were invited to perform at a training day during the summer term. The Choir also entertained at the Gaer Community Centre, Cwmbran Shopping Centre and local nursing homes. They have more events planned and enjoy visiting different places, teaching some BSL along the way.

Youth Speaks Competition Ieuan Cooke, Megan Alys Jones and Emily Jones all took part in the Cwmbran Rotary Youth Speaks competition this term. Although they came runner-up, they had some great feedback from the judges. Their topic was ‘Is the Criminal Justice System just?’ The best news of the night was seeing the award of ’Best Chair’ presented to Emily Jones.

Remembrance Service Ieuan Cooke, Ben Wolverson & Max Griffiths all volunteered to support Cwmbran Community Council’s Remem-brance Service on Sunday 13th November. They all provided valuable assistance in ensuring the smooth running of the event; their responsibilities included handing out the ‘Order of Service’ and ensuring those attended knew where to go. Ieuan read a piece, in Welsh, to the congregation and all three pupils were a credit to the school.

Christmas Jumper Day The Sixth Form Charity Leader and other Sixth Form students organised a Christmas Jumper Day on the last day on term. Donations of £1 per pupil/staff were collected and donated to a chosen charity.

Holocaust Memorial Day CHS pupils were invited to take part in the Holocaust Memorial on 27 January 2017, alongside 4 other Torfaen Secondary schools and various dignitaries, at St Cadoc's Church, Trevethin. Reverend Canon Brian Pippen intro-duced the order of service including prayers & readings from Reverend Jonny Raine, readings and poems from pupils from CHS, St Alban's, West Monmouth, Croesyceiliog & Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw schools , with various performances from Musicians/Instrumentalists and Choirs from the schools.

Phoenix Project A group of Year 8 students had the opportunity to complete a Fire Awareness course at Malpas Fire Station. The pu-pils involved thoroughly enjoyed the week, learnt a lot about Fire Safety and their own skills and abilities. Fire Service were extremely complimentary about the pupils.

Smoking Prevention A group of nearly 30 pupils in Year 8 have completed their training as Smoke Free Ambassadors this term. The pro-ject led by Public Health Wales has involved the pupils learning about the dangers of smoking, smoking prevention strategies and talking to their peers and adults about the risks associated with smoking. The pupils have worked very hard and have found the project both enjoyable and rewarding.

Burundi Bear Appeal Year 10 were involved in an appeal to help raise money for the charity FacilitAid. The pupils sold Burundi Bears. Each of these little teddies cost £1 which can pay for four bricks. These bricks will be used to build schools in Burun-di, a country which has been ravaged by war and only 10 out of 100 children are able to attend school. The pupils were very enthusiastic in their efforts and raised almost £600. All of this money goes directly to the project. Well done Year 10!

Poetry Competition

During December Miss J Ayling and Miss S Powell ran competitions for Year 7 and 8 pupils in the library. The competitions included poetry and instruction writing, maths problems and designing a gingerbread house. We received lots of lovely entries which made choosing the winners very difficult. First prize was awarded to Carmen Judd, Year 7 for literacy and Billy Harris, Year 7 for numeracy.

Socks for the Homeless IRU (Internal Referral Unit) pupils collected socks to give to homeless people at Christmas. They were told how awful homeless people’s lives can be. They were shocked at some of the stories and decided to help the home-less more often. Shakespeare Festival On 14th November, pupils in Year 10 participated in the largest youth theatre festival in Europe; the Schools Shakespeare Festival. 21 members of Mr Miller’s GCSE Drama class very capably performed a 30 minute version of Romeo and Juliet at the Riverfront theatre in Newport. The cast worked tirelessly and professionally on the piece for a number of weeks and the school can be very proud of their performance on the night, despite a very stressful dress rehearsal that proved right the theatre saying that a bad dress rehearsal means a good first performance. The students will now take all the skills and knowledge they developed into their GCSE Drama studies over the next two years.

Superhero Reading Challenge

In October we launched our Superhero Reading Challenge. The challenge was to read six books borrowed from the library. For every 6 books read they received a super hero pencil, and the pupils name was entered into a prize draw. On Thursday 15th December all of the pupils who completed the challenge were awarded their certifi-cate and badge, with James Davies, Year 7, selected at random to win the £10 gift voucher. Over the course of this terms challenge the pupils who entered have read 160 books!

Peer Mentor Project

We launched the second cohort of Peer Mentors at the school. 12 pupils in Year 10 completed 10 hours of train-ing to become Peer Mentors, including safeguarding training. They organised two staff coffee mornings to present their project and show staff how to refer pupils to the project. They presented assemblies to KS3 pupils to ensure that all pupils at Cwmbran High know they have the support of their peers. They have spent time with KS3 pupils in form times to offer further support and guidance to pupils. The Peer Mentors are available every Tuesday and Thursday lunchtimes in the library and referrals can be made to chat@chs.schoolsedu.org.uk.

‘Neighbourhood Enhancement’ & ‘Silver Surfers’ — Skills Challenge

As part of the skills challenge certificate our Year 10 and 11 pupils have to engage with 10 hours of activities which support the community. Year 10 were engaged in a “Neighbourhood Enhancement” scheme and our Year 11 with coaching a group of ‘Silver Surfers’ in how to use the internet. Both activities display the commitment of our pupils in the respect they have for their community and they developed and demonstrated a range of plan-ning and organisation skills in preparation to the activity, while being personally effective during completion of the “hours”. Well done to all involved.

Year 7 ‘Dragons Den’ Pitch Year 7 pupils completed an enterprise project “Going For Gold”. Pupils demonstrated their entrepreneurial skills by creating a commemorative jacket for the Olympic games and delivering their pitches to a panel of local ‘Dragons’. Sports manufacturer PSM agreed to sponsor the pupils and create a real prototype of the winning design. We enjoyed delivering our Community project in collaboration with the “First Give” charity, where £1,500 was donated to charity.

‘Reach for the Sky’ Fifteen Year 11 pupils followed the “Reach for the Sky” programme, provided by ESS (Education Staffing Solu-

tions). The programme is designed to help motivate students to achieve their potential and is run by Ian Gough, former Wales International rugby player, and John Radford, retired teacher. Following two classroom sessions in school, the last session was held at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff. The pupils had an amazing morning and were treated to stories of “Goughy’s” experiences. We started by entering through the VIP entrance, along the corridor of fame lined with the name of every player that has received a cap for Wales. The visit finished with Ian presenting certificates to the students for completion of the programme. This is an inspirational programme demonstrating to pupils that anything is achievable with the right attitude and hard work. All of the boys involved thoroughly enjoyed all of the sessions!

Community Links & Pupil Engagement

‘Employ Me’ - Autism Awareness Week Autism Awareness Week saw our Base students taking part in an ‘Employ Me’ project. Local businesses were ap-proached and asked if they would accept a student as an employee to show the community that pupils with a diagno-sis of ASD can be an asset to the work place. Many local businesses came on board and the week was hugely suc-cessful and ASD Base pupils and staff are extremely grateful to them for supporting this project.

Autism Animation Project

A group of our pupils have been involved in an animation project funded through Aneurin Bevan University Health Board to produce a short music video to raise awareness of Autism. The pupils worked with professionals to produce an amazing film from start to finish. They created everything from the music to the animations and the rap that they performed. The film was launched at a special event on Friday 31 March which was attended by Mrs Nicolaou and the students. Everyone who saw it was extremely impressed. The film will now be used at training and publicity events around the UK.

‘Taste Your Future’ Event

Pupils from the Hearing Impaired Base were given a fantastic opportunity on March 17th when they were invited to attend the British Deaf Association’s ‘Taste Your Future’ event in Cardiff. They met with a group of deaf and hard of hearing professionals who performed demonstrations from their field.

The pupils learnt a lot about different careers and the routes they would have to take to reach their goals but most importantly, they returned home feeling that their deafness doesn’t need to stand in the way of their dreams. This was the first time the BDA has organised such an event and we look forward to attending it annually.

World Book Day To celebrate World Book Day staff across the school dressed as their favourite book characters. The pupils really enjoyed guessing which characters they had dressed as and even voted for the best dressed teacher and depart-ment. A Competition for Years 7 and 8 was held in the Library. There were a range of literacy and numeracy activities that pupils could choose from. Prizes for the best entries were awarded to Bailey Richardson (Yr 7) and Leah Phillips (Yr 8). Every pupil was also given a £1 book token which they could use to buy a World Book Day book or get £1 off a book of their choice.

‘Our House’ - Congress Theatre

Many of our very talented pupils performed in this wonderful production and received some amazing reviews. The team were recognised for their hard work, commitment and talent.

Red Nose Day

Year 7 decided to support Red Nose Day 2017 with some fundraising ideas. There was a competition to design a ‘Red Nose’ and the winner of the £5 voucher was Keeley Jones. ‘Wacky Dodgeball’ was played after school on Red Nose Day. Pupils and teachers dressed up, wore onesies or generally looked a bit silly to play dodgeball. Everyone had a great time and along with the selling of Red Noses (supported by Jay Knowles in Year 11), we raised £105 for the Comic Relief Appeal.

Armed Forces Day Tabitha Clough represented CHS at Cwmbran Council's Armed Forces Day. She contributed to the ceremony by reading a thoughtful extract from the Bible, in Welsh, very beautifully. As always, she really was a credit to the school.

‘Beauty & the Beast’ (12 & 13 /7/17) Our production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast really has left an everlasting impression on the school which every-one was talking about. The musical show was held on 12 and 13 July 2017 with the final night exceeding all expectations and selling out!

There were a range of pupils who participated in the musical from year 7 to year 13 demonstrating the diverse Per-forming Arts Community that the school is proud of. Audience members raved about the show passing on comments such as: “The pupils were amazing and an absolute credit to your hard work. Everything looked and sounded so professional.”

The real Disney magic sparkled throughout the auditorium and enchanted young and old from start to finish. The costumes encapsulated the iconic scenes and characters from the film in a way that left the audience mesmerised by the singing, acting and choreography.

We are exceptionally proud of everyone involved in the production!

Community Links & Pupil Engagement

Sports Day On the 29th June pupils had the opportunity to compete in a range of traditional track and field athletics events plus some fun less traditional fun events. The response in terms of participation from the pupils was excellent and we were really pleased and grateful that former Pontypool, Wales and British Lions prop forward Mr Graham Price could join us to present the medals and trophies.

Army Outreach Day

On Wednesday 28th June, The Army Outreach team visited the school to hold the Intro PDA (Resilience, Team Building and Leadership Session) workshop with Year 12 Public Services and Business Studies students. They ar-ranged an outdoor session that gave students a taste of Army team building and problem solving with a wide range of hands-on activities. 15 students took part and the event lasted the entire day. It was full of challenging tasks that developed mental and physical attributes. The pupils were also provided with a careers presentation with the Army staff. Pupils had a really enjoyable day, taking part in tasting rations that soldiers eat out on the field and team work activi-ties such as getting items across a river with limited resources, moving tyres in the correct order, lifting and moving a box using just 2 ropes and an assault course. The students also had the opportunity to try on camouflage clothing and paint. All students got stuck in on the course with plenty of laughter along the way!

Welsh Water Competition

We are delighted to confirm that our Year 7 Skills pupils won the Welsh Water Competition. Pupils completed Independent research and produced work to raise awareness of the dangers of swimming in reservoirs. Judges from Welsh Water were extremely complementary about the work produced.

Summer School To support students in accreditation of their Skills Challenge Certificate (Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification) Year 10 students supported Mr Honey-Jones, with his Summer School programme which enabled them to pass their Community Challenge. After receiving training, students helped coach and mentor Year 6 students over two weeks of the summer holidays to support them with their transition from primary to secondary school.

Pupil Achievement

Paralympic Hopeful Kyran Bishop was chosen as one of the 10 out of 300 people to attend a Talent Assessment event for Para-Archery for the Tokyo Paralympics 2020 as part of Britain’s next Paralympic champions. On top of this, he has also been chosen as a Youth Sports Ambassador for the school and visited Treforest University campus for the day where he met former Paralympian John Harries.

Christmas Card Competition Congratulations to Celsey on her winning entry for our Christmas Card Competition. Celsey’s card became the official Christmas Card of CHS! She was also rewarded with an artists gift pack from the Art department.

Talented Writers

190 pupils (Years 8-13) were selected to be published for a writing competition which involved them having to write a “spine chiller” in 100 words or less which they entered last summer. Their entries were published in an an-thology of mini sagas! Theses are some of the chillingly creative titles: ‘The Forest Wanderer,’ ‘Like Nothing Ever Happened’ and ‘Choice or Consequence’. Well done to all those involved.

British Canoeing Champion Etienne Chappell recently took part in the British Canoeing Championships on 3 March. He won the junior 16 Pan Celtic Kayak event and he plus 2 others one the junior team race. He also qualified for the selection event for the Senior GB Team over the Easter weekend.

Autism App Designer

A new mobile phone and tablet app, “About me”, developed by the Health Board and partners was launched in November 2016 to improve information sharing and support for students and young people with autism. The Health Board worked with the young people from our ASD base right the way through the project, from designing the logo used to trialing the app before it was launched. The app was officially launched by AM Rebecca Evans (Minister for Social Services and Public Health) and Harry Ellor-Jones was invited to the launch to represent CHS as his logo design was the one chosen for the app.

Torfaen Leading Junior Sea Cadet

Alex Husselbee, Year 7, is a Leading Junior Sea Cadet at Torfaen Sea Cadets based in Pontnewydd. He and his fellow cadets, some of which also attend CHS have been very active with training on and playing instruments in the Torfaen Sea Cadets Drum Corps, for Remembrance Day Parades both in Pontnewydd and Pontypool.

Inter-Schools District Athletics Championships

Congratulations to Fraser Evans on finishing first place in the shot-putt and discus at the Inter-schools District Athletics Championships. James Probert also finished 2nd in the 100m. Both Fraser and James have now qualified for the county championships. Jermarie Chatham (100m), Lawson Hooper-Obrien (200m) & Jessica Tolley (hurdles) also finished 3rd in their events narrowly missing out on qualification for the county champion-ships.

Newport Dragons Ben Taylor (Yr 10), along with another 126 boys, have been training with the Dragons and Ben was picked Drag-ons regional side!

Celebration of Achievement Evening (6/7/17) ‘Celebration of Achievement’ Evening on Thursday 6th July 2017 was again a very successful and enjoyable event. Ash Randall, Pro Freestyle Footballer opened the proceedings, with an excellent demonstration of skills and some light-hearted competition between the staff he chose to join him on stage. From Subject Awards, to Head of Year Awards, to Community Awards, all the pupils were deserving winners and are outstanding role models for their peers. The cast of this year's School Production of ‘Beauty & the Beast’, along with the Deaf Choir ,both performed on stage at the event.

Sports Activities

At Cwmbran high we offer an extensive extra-curricular PE programme that is run jointly by the PE department and our 5x60 officer. Students have the opportunity to participate in competi-tive and non-competitive sporting activities during lunch time and after school. As a result over 650 students participated in at least one extra-curricular sporting activity last year. The activities offered to students are broad and varied to try and appeal to as many different interests’ students may have and to encourage as many students to participate as possible. Students had the opportunity to participate in basketball, badminton, 5 a’side football, trampo-lining, street dance, free running, cheerleading and students have the opportunity to use the fitness suite during lunchtime and after school. In addition to these opportunities we also competed in a range of matches and tournaments last year: Rugby

All Year Groups in KS3 and KS4 had the opportunity to compete against other schools in the authority. Year 9 & 11 students also had the opportunity to compete in the Welsh Schools cup. However, we unfortunately failed to progress beyond the group stages. However, the response from students in all year groups was very positive and we will look to build upon a positive start this year. Boys Football

Boys football club for KS3 was held on a Monday after school and was well attended with over 30 students regularly attending. All year groups participated in the Gwent schools cup and the welsh schools cup competition. Congratulations to the senior football team / football academy on another successful season. As defending champions they narrowly missed out on defend-ing their Gwent schools cup by loosing in the final. Sporting Achievements & Activities

Girls Football Girls Football club for Key Stage 3 was run on Friday lunchtime with the help of Declan Rawlings, Tayla Hinwood and Luke Kent (6th form students). Students had the opportunity to participate in a number of indoor community and futsal tournaments throughout the year.

Netball Netball Clubs have been run on both Mondays and Tuesday afterschool, with all year groups in Key Stage 3 and 4 having the opportunity to compete against other schools in the authority. Netball club has been well attended with over 40 girls regularly attending training every week. Cwmbran High was well represented at the year 7, 8 and 9 Netball Tournaments and the year 10 team competed well within their league but unfortunately did not qualify for the finals. The commitment and positive attitude shown to both training and matches by all the students involved has been excellent and we will look to develop and build upon this next year. A number of year 8 and 9 students have assisted with the year 7 netball club this year and are keen to make it a success. This has also helped them to develop their skills in coaching and umpiring. Cross Country

Last year we entered the inter-schools cross country leagues. Over 300 students from schools around Gwent compete in the event and Cwmbran High School was well represented with both boys and girls teams in each race for each Year Group. Congratulations to all students that competed in the team and special mention to Jasper Davenne & Riley Beer who consistently placed in the top 20 at each race. The number of students wishing to participate in cross country has gone from strength to strength and this year over 40 students represented Cwmbran High School in the Blackwood event.

Athletics

Throughout the summer term students had the opportunity to attend athletics club every Thursday afterschool. The response from students was excellent and consistently there were 30+ students participating in athletics events after school. The athletics teams were chosen from students that attended the club and students participated in the inter-schools athletics championships.

Sports Day

This year was Cwmbran High schools second sports day and we were very pleased to welcome former Wales and British Lions legend Graeme Price to present the medals and trophies to the students. It was a very successful day that built on the success of lasts year’s sports day. This year there was an even greater response from students with over 450 students competing in athletics events throughout the day. Student of the Year With-in the department we select a student every month that we feel deserves a special mention because of their efforts that month. This usually goes to a student that has 100% participation rate in lessons, has regularly attended extra-curricular clubs and has been committed to CHS sports teams. All of those students that received a student of the month nomination were considered for the student of the year in PE and it was difficult to narrow the selection down to one boy and one girl for each year group. PE trophies Each year the department presents a special trophy to the best boy or girl from across all year groups. This trophy is presented to students for excellent academic performance in PE, for their sporting success on the sports field or for their help with-in the PE department and their leader-ship skills. This years worthy winner was: Declan Rawlings - Declan is a hardworking and enthusiastic student. He is also a talented sportsman who has demonstrated excellent commitment to the PE department and 5x60 clubs this year. As a volunteer coach he has coached the Year 7 boys and girls football teams, delivered sport sessions in our local feeder primary schools and helped out with sports develop-ment festivals including Newport county football festival and school sport transition festivals. Declan has made the most of various other opportunities to further develop as a coach and has achieved his football leaders and tennis activators award. As a result of all the hard work Declan has done this year he has also been nominated for an award with the welsh football trust and we are waiting to hear the result. Declan has been a massive help to the PE department and sports development this year and is well on track to become a fantastic coach of the future.

As part of Sports Development and Newport ‘County in the programme’ we have offered taster sessions with both girls and boys within PE lessons. Also, as part of the NCFC cups CHS have attended Girls Cup (Years 7/8) in which we reached the semi-finals that was held at the velodrome, Newport. We have attended Basketball and Badminton festivals as part of 5 x 60 festivals. We are also working to engage pupils in health and wellbeing programmes through sport within school. 5 x 60 clubs are running and offering a number of clubs including, football, badminton, netball, trampolining, fitness suite sessions, cheerleading and more to follow based on what the pupils would like so we can offer a variety. Again this year Mr Guy, our sports development officer, organised a very successful Transition Festival. Many ‘Coaches of the Future’ and Sports Leaders supported Mr Guy and helped to deliver sessions to the Year 5&6 students. A very enjoyable day was had by all involved. We had 6 feeder schools involved with over 200 pupils participating. Coaches of the Future/CSLA Sports leaders 4 CHS pupils Declan Rawlings and Lewis Bond (2016), Joe Edmonds and Georgia Whitty (2017) attended ‘Coaches of the Future’ courses and are now helping out with school sessions, festivals and also community club sessions. The following pupils were identified to attend the Young Leaders Award (Sports Leaders) to en-hance their coaching experience and help at sessions within school and local feeder schools. Football Academy

The Football Academy continues to flourish working in partnership with the Torfaen Coaching Centre. Our under 18s had a disappointing season in the West Midland College League and unfortunately were knocked out of the Gwent School Cup in the Semi-Final stages. We had two training days for the new intake of players and an Open Forum night to try to answer any queries that parents/carers and players may have. We took the opportunity to share with them the history of the Academy and outline our expectations. During the past two years the Academy played a supporting role to the school’s ASD Base by offering support to some of their challenging students who benefit from the influence of some of the Academy players. We offer reward sessions for students who enjoy playing football and the players planned and ran a very successful Sports Day for the ASD students at Cwmbran Sports Field at the end of the term. We run weekly small group PE sessions for ASD students who struggle to engage in timetabled PE lessons due to their sensory and social needs. This has been hugely successful in not only developing their PE skills but also their ability to participate in groups and build their confidence.
