create a trade-show environment that will

help you meet your objective.”

“The end product may be a physical

booth, but your main focus should be

on attracting customers and generating

business,” says Bennett Hui, owner of

Speedpro Imaging in Richmond. “You

have to put yourself in the attendees’

shoes by asking, ‘What can I do to make

the best fi rst impression? How can I diff er-

entiate myself from competing exhibitors?’”

With just three seconds to pique the

interest of passersby, you must create a

trade-show presence that “reaches out

and grabs people,” says Hui. Make sure

“your display and your team look their best.”

“Companies often make the mistake

of not sending their CEOs, managers

and technical staff to a trade show,” says

Never underestimate trade shows.

“The idea that trade shows

don’t make good use of mar-

keting dollars is false,” says Mark Bourgeau,

president of Delta-based Exhibitree Display.

“Trade shows are one of the best ways to

build brand awareness and generate sales

leads, but you need to make sure that you

cover all your bases.”

Begin by defi ning your goals.

Hanif Muljiani, president of Richmond-

headquartered Xibita Ltd. “Your instinct

may be to send employees who can

more easily give up a day of work. But

remember, you’re there to meet potential

clients, and statistics show that they’re

often ready to buy. If they have technical

questions or want to make a deal, you

must have senior-level attendance and

technical know-how at the show.”

Just as pressing: booth placement. “Some

spots in a convention space get less traffic;

some get more,” says Hui. “Real estate counts,

so make sure you locate yourself strategically

when you sign up” as an exhibitor.

Parking yourself by your competitors,

he adds, isn’t necessarily a bad idea: “Think

about those districts in big cities where

similar businesses clump together. People

know to go there to get that product; the

same goes for trade shows.”

After that, according to Muljiani, “it

really comes down to what are you going

to say. You need one bold, impactful,

laser-focused statement that instantly tells

people who you are and what your value

proposition is. It’s okay to make your vis-

uals big and bold – trade-show marketing

is usually larger than life – but don’t dilute

the message.”

Hui agrees. “You’d be surprised at how

many exhibitors put too much detail up or

too many busy graphics and images,” says

Hui. “Make sure that the text in your signs

and displays is big enough to be seen

from 20-plus feet away, but don’t drown it

out with too many distractions.”

Bourgeau says, “You need to be quick

and succinct at attracting people’s attention.

If they don’t instantly connect their needs

with your booth, they won’t give you a

second glance. They’ll just walk right by you.”

Booths designed by Xibita (clockwise from left): Windset Farms, Bare Sports, Algoma University, Restylane

Hui advises “doing something less con-

ventional, something different” from what

others do. Changing something simple,

like flooring, can make an impression.

Getting heavy-handed with gimmicks,

however, can backfire. Hui warns against

cramming your booth with “everything

your business has,” lest “ things get too

busy.”

As for hand-outs, “70 per cent of all

trade-show materials – brochures, freebies,

gifts – get thrown away,” says Muljiani,

adding that many delegates travel long

distances to the show and have little room

in their luggage to carry giveaways home.

“Quality before quantity,” he says. “You

have to think, ‘What’s the value in giving

that gift?’ Is it going to help you to make

a sale, get a contact name or number or

follow up” the contact later?

One of the best freebies he himself

has ever received was a two-part gift: a

remote-control car bearing the company’s

logo. The remote was missing. As he

recalls, an attached note read, “‘Want the

remote? Ask us to drop it by in person,

and we’ll tell you how our company can

help your business.’ Brilliant.”

Muljiani says, “Don’t be afraid to do

things in a fun, cheeky way, even when

it comes to your booth staff. Those ener-

getic, bubbly people can work wonders in

drawing a crowd and making those critical

connections for your business. That is,

after all, the whole value of a trade show:

you’re investing in meeting people.”

Market researchers are fi nding social media,

the Internet overall and new digital tech-

nologies to be necessary tools. Yet opin-

ions vary on how often they should be used and on

their eff ectiveness in gathering market data.

On one side: companies like Vancouver-based

Vision Critical Communications Inc., which reported

an increase of 36 per cent in annual revenue in 2010

from fully embracing new data-collection methods

like online survey panels.

On the other: companies that use digital, web and social-

media tools more cautiously. These include British Columbia’s

second-largest market-research fi rm by employee count, the

Mustel Group, which still trusts randomized telephone surveys

and focus groups.

In March 2011, Vision Critical created its 500th online community

panel. Each member of the company’s panels has been recruited

to provide, as needed, an opinion about a particular brand.

Vision Critical’s customers, which include such major brands

as Banana Republic, NASCAR and Quiksilver Inc., can interact with

other members of their own respective community panels any

time through highly engaging, visually stimulating online surveys.

With an average response rate of 51 per cent, the company says

these panels easily outperform more traditional research methods.

Each panel can have anywhere from 5,000 to 15,000 mem-

bers, recruited through warranty cards, email, websites, banner

ads and retail points-of-sale. Reid says that Vision Critical’s panel

platform allows businesses nimbly to maintain ongoing conver-

sations with consumers rather than simply analyzing data from

the past to speculate about what to do in the future. While fewer

than two per cent of Vision Critical’s thousands of panel mem-

bers respond to web surveys through mobile devices, the fi rm

believes that surveying on such devices is the next frontier of

market research.

“We’re spending $10 million on research and development this

year,” says Reid. “Everything we’re doing, we’re thinking about the

need to leverage mobile.”

He cites high refusal rates among persons asked to participate

in telephone surveys as a key reason that invitation-based

web surveys, even if through mobile devices, are more

eff ective and aff ordable.

Evi Mustel, principal of the Mustel Group in

Vancouver, believes that online and traditional

market research methods each has advantages and

disadvantages.

The anonymity of the Internet may encourage

people to respond more candidly to online

surveys, says Mustel, whereas the same people

may hesitate to divulge information over the

telephone.

Yet she notes that many online polls are diffi cult to

conduct randomly. They are usually completed with people

who have been invited to participate after purchasing products

or engaging with brands in some capacity, as on websites.

Objectivity is undermined if surveys are weighted toward

people who may have existing affi nities for particular brands.

“We do a lot of work for municipalities and regional govern-

ments, and they’re not comfortable with the idea of using panels

of people who have been recruited, who have already opted in,”

says Mustel. “They want to do something more democratic.”

Vision Critical addresses such issues by creating large panels

representing the general population, distinct from its smaller

client-operated panels. The Angus Reid Forum, for example, has

more than 100,000 members, who may be asked at any time to

participate in random surveys on topics to which they may or

may not have a particular connection.

Mustel also notes that while nearly everyone has a cell phone

or landline, certain ethnicities and age groups use the Internet

more than others: another fact that can skew an online survey.

Mustel notes that it can be diffi cult to conduct a randomized

survey over the phone, given that more and more people are

screening calls or have signed up for the do-not-call list, which

is designed to prevent unwanted calls from telemarketers but

which has been adopted by many market researchers.

“There are certain design factors that hinder our ability to have

a truly random sample,” says Mustel of all market research.

Rob Dawson, a partner at Vancouver’s Concerto Marketing

Group Inc., adds that whatever the medium, researchers must

understand what’s driving consumers’ behaviours and responses:

“It is very easy to gather a lot of feedback, anecdotes and stories

from customers, but unless you have a framework for analyzing

and categorizing it all and reacting to it, you’re basically just

going to have a large collection of data.”

Just when you thought that the Internet and social

media were large enough monkey wrenches for

traditional advertisers, along come the smart-

phone, the tablet and the personal video recorder

(PVR).

The appearance of each new device makes it

all the more important for advertisers not only to

develop the right messages for consumers but

also to consider how to deliver them.

Is the television commercial still a valid

ad platform now that consumers are using

PVRs to fast-forward through breaks?

How do commercial-free podcasts

on the iPhone aff ect traditional radio

spots?

And what of the tablet: is it like a

small TV or more a large smartphone?

Perhaps it’s like a laptop? Or is it a

hybrid of all three?

Carmen Hunt, an instructor in

media planning and buying at British

Columbia Institute of Technology and

a former media director of ad agency

TBWA\Vancouver (now called Trees &

Rocks) knows it’s not the medium that

advertisers should be chasing but the

audience.

Each new device allows consumers

new ways to access more media.

Carmen Hunt, instructor in media planning and buying, British Columbia Institute of Technology

Page 11: Adpages 2011

TV is still TV

Even the PVR encourages more (or at least

more tailored) use of media.

With the TV audience still watching if

not growing, Hunt says advertisers have the

key task of developing messages creative

enough to capture and keep attention.

Partly thanks to the ad industry’s cre-

ativity, the PVR hasn’t killed the TV com-

mercial yet.

Hunt notes that even though a PVR

user can fast-forward through commer-

cials, a viewer without a PVR will often

leave the room during commercials for a

bathroom break or to grab a snack.

At least PVR users are still watching

commercials, albeit in fast-forward.

Hunt says that advertisers are acknow-

ledging that behaviour.

For example, key messages such as

brand logos or slogans are made to linger

a little longer on the screen during com-

mercials so as to be noticed even by fast-

forwarding PVR users.

PVR penetration in this country was

20 per cent at the beginning of 2010,

according to BBM Canada.

And BBM doesn’t believe that per-

centage will grow much in 2011.

BBM’s finding that the percentage of real-

time television viewing in Canada remains

above 95 per cent suggests that even PVR

users still watch plenty of real-time TV.

Hunt says that many PVR viewers still

prefer catching local TV news live rather

than recording it.

That’s one reason, she says, that many

advertisers believe ad spots during news

are particularly effective today.

“Overall, TV ad prices are fairly stable

because we’re shifting away from big-

budget national, top-10 programming to

local news programming, which tends to

be cheaper on a cost-per-audience basis,”

she says.

Reinforcing the value of traditional TV,

Deloitte Canada notes in its 2011 Canadian

technology, media and telecommunica-

tions predictions that the growing pene-

tration of large flat-panel TVs and the

rise in high-definition broadcast material

should increase the visual impact of pro-

gramming and advertising.

DIY radio

While commercial radio revenue was

down five per cent in 2009 (the most

recent annual figure available from

the Canadian Radio-television and

Telecommunications Commission), more

than two-thirds of Canadians still tune in

to radio.

This suggests that the triple-whammy

of the iPhone, satellite radio and the pod-

cast hasn’t yet killed terrestrial radio.

Hunt says that listeners still tune to

radio for local content such as the weather,

traffic reports and music from the area.

She notes the new advertising oppor-

tunities presented at the global level by

the Internet-powered podcast. Instead of

buying ad airtime, companies are creating

their own podcasts.

For example, financial-service firms are

creating podcasts in which employees

discuss banking issues, while electronics

makers are creating ones that provide

step-by step guidance on putting

together the perfect home-entertainment

system.

Enter the tablet

The publishing industry, which has per-

haps felt the digital shift most acutely,

could have its white knight in the tablet.

For instance, savvy publishers and

advertisers are developing the tablet audi-

ence by providing iPad users with exclu-

sive newspaper or magazine offerings.

One of the most interesting features so

far has emerged from Dare, a Vancouver-

based ad agency.

The paint application known as Remote

Palette is both an iPhone and iPad applica-

tion that tethers the two devices together

using Bluetooth technology.

The iPhone acts as a colour palette, the

iPad as a paint canvas.

“From the user’s perspective, it is this

jaw-dropping demonstration of how

two devices can work together to create

an experience,” says Dare’s senior vice-

president, Sandy Fleischer.

The company is creating new applica-

tions for clients that similarly use the two

devices at once.

“I think the big difference here when

you talk about the shift from traditional

advertising to digital is that we are pro-

viding utility,” says Fleischer. “With digital,

we’re actually blurring the lines between

product creation and marketing.

“That’s where it gets really exciting.”

Jerrid Grimm smiles when he sees the

stolen pink fl amingo in the offi ce across

the street.

Asked about it, he says the plastic bird

is evidence that guerilla marketing works.

A few years ago, he was part of the

advertising team that spread 10,000 fl a-

mingos throughout Vancouver’s public

spaces to advertise Telus.

The campaign refl ected a then-popular

television ad featuring a live fl amingo.

As trendy as the commercial was,

a horde of plastic fl amingos littered

throughout the city created a whole new

set of risks for the advertisers.

Grimm and his team had to consider

the fact the campaign might backfi re

in any number of ways, not the least of

which was turning customers away from

Telus or facing the city’s wrath.

“You have to set it up in advance. The

idea is: plan to be in trouble,” says Grimm,

vice-president, client service, at Newad

Inc. “Have a contingency, so [that] if you’re

doing something guerilla, know that you’ll

likely get a complaint and know how to

deal with it.”

That’s Grimm’s advice for guerilla mar-

that relies on creativity more than budget.

In the case of the flamingos, Grimm

and his team studied the city’s code

ahead of time to make sure they weren’t

breaking any bylaws. They also planned a

takedown for noon the same day.

When they returned to pick up the fla-

mingos, only 500 were left.

The vast majority had been stolen, and

one of them wound up in the office across

the street.

So was it a success?

Grimm maintains that if Telus man-

aged to get someone to retain a part

of its brand in his or her office over the

next four years, the campaign should be

deemed to have succeeded. “We actually

wanted them to steal it.”

Yet for each guerilla-marketing story

that works, there’s another that doesn’t.

That’s why Pattison Outdoor

Advertising, a division of Vancouver-based

Jim Pattison Group, sticks with traditional

billboards.

“Guerilla can say, ‘Oh yeah, it works’, but

saying it and proving it may be different,”

explains Randy Otto, president of Pattison

Outdoor. “If it’s worked once, then why

wouldn’t [the advertiser] be doing it over

and over again? Why is it only a one-time

wonder for an advertiser?”

Don’t get him wrong; Otto is the first

to admit that new ideas are fabulous for

the advertising industry.

It’s just that guerilla tactics can be so

off-putting that they tend to push audi-

ences away or make them angry, he feels.

“We get people coming to us with

pretty wild creative [ideas].… Will it catch

the public’s attention? Absolutely. Will it

catch it in the way that will allow us to

stay in business? Probably not, because

in our industry the medium and the mes-

sage [go] hand in glove.”

That’s why Pattison focuses on introdu-

cing new ways for traditional billboards to

catch the eye.

Advancements in large-format digital

printing are creating more vibrant ads

than ever, Otto says, and the company is

also switching to LED lighting on all poster

panels across the country.

Pattison is a fan of digital billboards,

though they must be placed in the right

spot, Otto says.

Two years ago, local advertisers balked

at the opportunity to acquire ad space on

the Squamish Nation’s digital billboards.

The billboards were embroiled in con-

troversy when locals felt they obstructed

the natural beauty surrounding Metro

Vancouver’s roadways.

Once the initial hubbub wore off, how-

ever, advertisers ate the space up.

The billboards were even home to a

public art project this April.

Simon Fraser University professor Clint

Burnham and project partner Lorna Brown

bought $30,000 worth of space on the

billboards to post Twitter-like messages

written in aboriginal languages.

Burnham says the billboards were a

perfect medium for conveying cultural

messages about First Nations.

The project was called Digital Natives,

and while it shed light on local cultures

that few people understood, billboard

operator Astral didn’t agree to everything

requested.

“We did get some blowback from them

as well: there were three messages they

just would not publish,” Burnham says.

Brodie Gunning, chief executive officer

of Vancouver’s Media Merchants, says he

spends much of his time changing clients’

opinions about billboard advertising.

“A lot of people have this negative

stigma or negative opinion of what bill-

boards have done,” he says.

Founded in 2005, his group has quickly

become one of Canada’s largest non-

traditional advertising companies.

Non-traditional means that ads rely on

projectors that stream campaigns on walls

or windows.

A few years ago, projection advertising

was considered a guerilla tactic, but

Gunning says it’s gone mainstream.

That, and the company doesn’t want to be known as a guerilla

advertiser, a term that can have a negative effect on sales.

Gunning says more and more clients are latching on to projec-

tion advertising (the company’s sales grew 500 per cent in 2010).

As complicated as projection or guerilla campaigns might

sound, Gunning believes that basic ads are best even in new

media. Since the viewer walking down the street has just “five or

10 seconds, and that’s all,” simplicity, he argues, is the way to go.

editor’s best10 keys to writing clearly on line

By Naomi Wittes Reichstein

Face it: Not even your mom will want to

spend much time perusing your com-

pany’s website.

To make life easy for viewers, use

crisp, clear English. If, like me, you enjoy

linguistic complexity, save it for your own

personal site or the novel you’re writing

on your own time.

On your company’s site, incorporate:

Simplicity: Say what you mean directly

and concisely. Even highly educated

readers respond differently to online

from offline writing. Most of us accept

complicated text more readily from

printed pages than from websites.

Emphasize the main message you want

your viewer to take away. Avoid caveats

and self-qualifications.

Visibility: Typeface colours should pop

from the screen; reserve soft pastels for

background. Use text large enough for

comfortable legibility. Relegate to fine

print information that viewers are unlikely

to spend time reading.

Positive statements: Positive

statements and instructions are more

helpful than negative ones. Generally,

emphasize what viewers should do rather

than what they shouldn’t do. If your

website has practical applications, state

clearly which steps viewers should take

and in what order.

Short words: Favour brief terms over

multisyllabic ones. Avoid technicalities

except when they’re absolutely necessary

for your intended audience.

Snappy sentences: Use brief declarative

and imperative sentences. Simple

constructions (subject, verb, object) are

easiest for readers to follow quickly. “You”

statements engage customers effectively.

Use active, not passive verbs. Limit use of

extended subordinate clauses.

Brief paragraphs: Eyes tire more

quickly when cast over computer screens

than over print. Many viewers find it

difficult to confront extended blocks

of text on line. Start new paragraphs

frequently, separating them with extra

line breaks to create white space.

List formats: Bullets and numberings

break paragraphs up to facilitate reading.

Such formats are especially helpful

for conveying capsules of information

or giving the viewer step-by-step

instructions. Example: the format of this

sidebar article I’ve written.

Typeface: To direct and relieve viewers’

eyes, vary fonts, their styles and their

sizes. Caution: Use becomes abuse when

too many such variations appear on the

same page.

Headings: Boldfaced headings and

subheadings break paragraphs up and

provide signposts to guide viewers

quickly.

Professionalism: Simplicity doesn’t

mean sloppiness. Craft your site

meticulously. If your own writing isn’t

stellar, hire a copywriter with online

experience. No one’s perfect, so even

if you’re good enough to do the

writing yourself, hire someone else to

substance over styleHow to find the best design partner for your business

With graphic communications increas-

ingly recognized as critical to success,

it’s important to fi nd the right design fi rm

for your company.

Yet many in business struggle to attract,

evaluate and select design partners. One

might hire friends or family, while another

might create a contest with a prize for the

selected submission. Many others rely on

archaic requests for proposals (RFPs) for

transparency and objectivity in arriving at

competitive pricing. The resulting relation-

ships can be as unrewarding as the out-

comes. Is there a better way?

Seek help in your search

Recommendations from within your

own industry or from design experts will

almost always be more eff ective than

online searches or RFPs. Consult with

design associations on identifying quali-

fi ed candidates from their certifi ed ranks.

Are the candidates thought leaders in

design, respected by industry, peers and

clients? Or consider delegating the search

to a marketing consultant with experience

procuring and managing design.

Look beyond portfolios

In addition to evaluating a design team’s

portfolio, investigate the company’s skills in

business and project management. Don’t

judge only on esthetics or descriptions of

process. Challenge candidates to express

what was behind their design choices and

how their particular approaches solved cli-

ents’ problems. Visit their studios and speak

to them in person to judge fi t. You needn’t

become friends, but you should share sim-

ilar perspectives, goals or ethics and enjoy

collaborating together.

Ask for case studies and testimonials

Request comprehensive case studies

that outline goals, context and approach

Seek a consultant, not a proposal

Avoid the temptation to require designers

to provide fi rm cost proposals up front

on the basis of your description of deliv-

erables. Instead, share your problem,

goals, budget and timeline and engage a

qualifi ed designer to work with you to pre-

scribe strategic solutions tailored to your

unique situation. After this initial discovery,

create a project plan that outlines the spe-

cifi cs of the solution. Write a contract after

arriving at an agreement. As to hourly

rates, you get what you pay for: prices will

refl ect experience and effi ciency.

Like hiring a senior employee or taking on

a partner, choosing the right design fi rm

can be a critical moment in the growth of

your business. The best candidates won’t

give away strategy to prospects – cer-

tainly not before doing the research and

diagnostics they’ll need to understand the

situation fully – so don’t ask for it before

hiring a team. If the discovery phase

doesn’t impress you or you dislike working

together, move on.

About 20 per cent of our business at

Industrial Brand comes from clients who

hired design providers ineff ectively and

have had to redo their identity systems

or websites, didn’t understand what they

were paying for or found themselves with

limited options after their designers van-

ished. Don’t fi xate on deliverables and costs

before choosing your partner. What you’re

really paying for is a well-considered pro-

cess. Use the opportunity to start a long-

term relationship with a partner you trust.

to reveal whether processes are results-

driven. Ask for testimonials or contact

information for specifi c clients. If candi-

dates don’t willingly off er these, move on.

Who will do the work?

Investigate each fi rm’s current employees

and in-house capabilities. How many

long-term, full-time designers do the fi rms

employ? How much design or develop-

ment do they farm out, and are they

transparent about this? Inquire how direct

a role the senior members will play in your

project.

What’s included?

What is and isn’t covered in candidates’

fees? Do they provide working fi les? Do

they use proprietary or open-source solu-

tions? What’s their stance on ownership

and copyright, and how do they handle

cost overruns?

Will candidates be there

for you in future?

The real value of a relationship with a

designer is in his or her repeatable pro-

cess and creative thinking applied to your

problem, not merely to your fi nal product.

Since the worth of this relationship often

emerges over time, inquire about candi-

dates’ plans for growth. Look for indica-

tions that fi rms have been and will be

around long-term.

Are candidates asking questions?

Do candidates spend most of their

time selling you on themselves, or do

they seem genuinely interested in your

problem and goals? The best practitioners

will be hungry for the details underlying

your situation and may push you to recon-

sider causal factors and solutions. Speak

openly about your business needs and

expectations.

type stylesPrint isn’t dying, it’s just changing … like everything else

As Pär Edin, a director

at McKinsey, said,

“Uncertainty is the new

normal.” From the invention

of the wheel to that of the iPad, we’ve

always existed with change, but what’s dif-

ferent today is its speed.

With technology changing how we

live, work, play, use media and respond to

messages, consumers have more power

than ever before to access information,

join communities and participate with

what they want, when they want, where

they want, how they want and if they

want. How can we inspire such connected

people to associate with brands today?

The print world has been at the centre of

this storm. Although stories about declines

in readership, circulation and revenue have

been exaggerated, print is certainly under-

going massive change. And such change

– involving less time, attention and trust from

consumers and an explosion in product

choice and media channels – affects pro-

foundly how publishers and advertisers must

connect with their audiences.

How can advertisers get the most out

of print today?

Take print out of isolation

Think about how you’re using print’s

mass reach to supercharge a conversa-

tion about your brand. How will print link

to everything else you’re doing in paid,

owned or earned media? How do your

printed efforts unite with all your other

endeavours to tell a larger story?

Produce print ads that

people will share

Stop thinking of the perusal of your ads as

end points. Today it’s just the beginning.

What happens next? How can readers par-

ticipate in or pass along your advertising?

People trust friends and family above all, the

most

recommended brands

grow the fastest, and word

of mouth drives the

economy. So use print

to deliver ideas that

people feel compelled

to share.

Digital

enhances print

Don’t see digital as a replacement for print;

it enhances it. In 2009, Esquire created an

entire edition in which augmented reality

brought every page to life. Augmented

reality means adding computer-generated

sensory input to a real-world environment;

Esquire achieved this by using QR codes

that readers could hold up to the com-

puter webcam. Volkswagen recently ran a

print campaign whereby the reader could

virtually test-drive a car inside a print ad by

using a special smartphone app. Be careful,

though: a QR code isn’t an idea, just a tool

that can help bring an idea to life.

Don’t be an

encyclopedia

Advertisers often use

print to deliver large

amounts of informa-

tion aimed at readers’

rational minds. Yet the

latest research shows

that most choices by

consumers are motiv-

ated by emotion.

People don’t “think,

feel, do”; they “feel, do,

think.” Tap into the emotional brain rather

than delivering rationally based informa-

tion and data.

Think about context

People choose print for very strong rea-

sons: a publication’s content, editorial

point of view, tone of voice, style, etc.

“One size fits all” won’t yield exceptional

results. To connect with readers of a par-

ticular publication, create ads that take

into account the context in which they’re

being read. Foster deeper relationships

with fewer publications but with key titles,

the ones you see as being great fits for

your brand and the most important for

reaching the right audiences in the right

kind of editorial environments. Work with

these publications to co-create content.

It’s still all about the idea

One thing that will never change in any

form of advertising: better ideas deliver

better results. If your advertising isn’t

entertaining, useful or innovative, every-

thing else is academic.

Print publications will be around for many

years to come. They’ll evolve to become

more targeted; the great will

prosper, the bad disappear.

Readers will become even

more loyal, interested and

passionate about the publica-

tions they read.

It’s been speculated that

these changes will lead print

to become more prestigious,

offering relationships with

readers that will be deeper and

richer than those today. Ideas worth

sharing will always be in style, and

by incorporating them into your print

advertising, you’ll continue to find the

medium to be a key part of your mix.

Remember the long-running “Super, Natural British

Columbia” campaign? It remains one of the most suc-

cessful tourism promotions the province has ever

conducted, pairing a succinct statement that incorporates the

province’s name with memorable images of inspiring scenes.

Today, it’s the 2010 Winter Olympic Games that people

highlight as having drawn hearts and minds to B.C. and

inspiring fresh waves of tourists to visit the province. With

dynamic competitions in picturesque settings, the games

were tailor-made for audiences attuned to broadcast media.

Yet for all their glory, the Olympics lasted a mere two weeks:

shorter than the lives of most ad campaigns. Deep impressions

were made, but the province’s tourism industry then had to

leverage them to draw attention to all B.C. has to off er.

The initiatives overseen by Carol Nelson, director, mar-

keting North America, for the provincial agency Tourism

British Columbia, focus on the digital realm, where most

people now make their travel plans.

“Converting that increased awareness of B.C.: that’s very

much what we’re doing,” Nelson says.

The first step was renewing the “You

Gotta Be Here” campaign that ran during

the Olympics. Tourism BC took this $4-mil-

lion campaign to cities as far away as San

Francisco, complementing events with

media spots and online promotions.

This past winter, another largely online

promotion highlighted the province’s ski

about 25 per cent of visitors clicking to a

resort’s offer. This program carried a price

tag of $1.4 million.

The latest initiative in her roster, Nelson

says, is an ambitious campaign targeting

China, where Canada is now an approved

destination, meaning that Chinese

nationals have greater freedom to visit B.C.

Anchored by a 100-page feature in World

Traveller Magazine and eight 25-minute

television episodes about the province on

the Discovery Channel, the campaign is

backed up with airport and subway ads

that Nelson says could reach upwards of

200 million persons.

The common elements to the cam-

paigns are online components that mesh

with how consumers research and plan

travel. While the promotion uses trad-

itional media in China, in North America

upwards of 80 per cent of marketing

efforts are on line.

“Increasingly, consumers are planning

and booking their travel on line, and

increasingly our advertising is on line,”

Nelson says. “It’s tremendously cost-

effective and very targeted.”

By using contact lists from promotions

such as “You Gotta Be Here,” Tourism BC

also helps keep the province top of mind

with potential travellers.

Yet with exchange rates slowing visits

from the United States, will travellers come?

It’s an important question, given that B.C.

announced in February 2007 the aim of

doubling tourism revenues by 2015. When

asked about progress toward the goal, the

B.C. Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation

(which includes Tourism BC) noted in a

backgrounder provided to Adpages that

governmental dollars for tourism marketing

and industry development have more than

doubled from less than $24 million in 2001

to $52 million today.

According to the backgrounder, future

marketing plans will be implemented by

a “market-driven regime” delivered by

a partnership of “successful commercial

players, non-profit and community based

tourist organizations.”

destinations to the key markets of California,

Washington State, Alberta and Ontario as

well as within B.C. Traditional advertising,

including billboards and print ads, drove

traffic to www.hellobc.com, where special

offers from the province’s 13 destination ski

resorts appeared. The campaign resulted in

more than 118,000 visits to the page, with

messes and messagesWhen a crisis threatens your brand, you have only

minutes to communicate the right things

Your workers are falling ill, and the union

has called the media. A food-poisoning

outbreak points directly at your restaurant.

Someone has called your customers saying

your product has been tampered with

and is now dangerous or poisonous. An

employee faces criminal charges for

work-related or on-duty activities.

Calls start fl ooding in from reporters;

camera crews arrive at your doorstep.

You must make the best decision fast,

do all the right things and communicate

accurately and eff ectively. Are you ready?

No question: the best time to

prepare for a crisis is well in

advance of one.

Start with an up-to-date, work-

able crisis-communications plan. I say

workable because most such plans aren’t.

Many weigh fi ve pounds with more pages

than a city directory. Those are really

training manuals; they don’t work as plans.

Yours should be just a few pages starting

with your organization’s communications

policy, names and contact information for

your crisis-management team and a step-

by-step to-do list for communications.

Tabbed appendices should give

examples of the types of crises you could

experience, with specifi c steps to be taken

for each. Include samples of communica-

tions materials you might need, with tem-

plates that can be quickly updated and

customized for specifi c circumstances.

There should be examples of holding

statements that spokespeople can use

as fi rst responses while information is

gathered and crisis communications are

developed. For instance:

“We have just been notifi ed of this occur-

rence. We are gathering facts and co-oper-

ating with authorities. More information

will be given as it becomes available.”

“What we can say now is that we operate

under the strictest health standards and

are in full compliance with all health and

WorkSafeBC regulations. The health and

safety of our employees, our customers

and the general public are our number-1

concerns. We are co-operating with investi-

gators, and all products are being removed

from consumer availability until they have

been ruled safe.”

Example 1

1. “Our concern and sympathies go out to

the workers and their families.”

2. “The health and safety of our workers,

the community, our customers and the

public are our number-1 concerns.”

3. “The job site will remain closed as we

work with the authorities to determine

the cause, and no one will return to

work until it is safe to do so.”

By Alyn Edwards

Media training is essential to

eff ective communications. Incorrect infor-

mation, weak messages or the appear-

ance of not taking a situation seriously

can devastate your company’s reputation,

products and services. Sometimes the

cash register can stop ringing altogether

if customers boycott a company that has

lost its good reputation. In extreme cir-

cumstances, this can mean the end of a

product, the ability to deliver a service or

the company altogether.

With your plan and media training

already in place when a crisis hits, you’ll

need to develop a fact sheet about the

situation at hand. Prepare it in point form

on one page. Outline 10 known facts

about the crisis. Keep them bulletproof

and irrefutable: just the facts.

Then use the fact sheet to develop three

key messages, the essential communications

that state your company’s position.

Example 2

1. “This is what we know now con-

cerning what has happened.”

2. “Here is what we are doing to remedy

the situation.”

3. “We will take the following steps to

ensure that this doesn’t happen again.”

You may be proactive with the media by

holding a news conference to deliver the

facts and key messages or by sending out

a news release based on the fact sheet and

key messages. Or you can send out a news

release in reaction to media inquiries.

As a crisis-communications manager

and media trainer, I can tell you how

diffi cult it is to help a company in crisis

when it has no trained spokespeople,

designated crisis communications team or

current, workable plan. With social media

instantly carrying messages and more news

outlets in existence than ever before, fore-

thought and preparation go a long way in

protecting brands and reputations.

Lessons from advertising

on social media

Ryan Holmes, president of HootSuite Media, whose more than 1.5 million users make its software among the top five Twitter applications

By Curt Cherewayko

When Twitter decided to launch

paid advertisements in its conver-

sation streams last year, it turned

to Vancouver’s HootSuite Media, Inc. for help.

HootSuite was the fi rst third-party

application to syndicate Twitter ads, a

recognition of just how popular HootSuite

had become with people and busi-

nesses requiring a more robust product

to schedule, manage and monitor their

Twitter-based brands and personae.

Paid advertisements, or promoted

tweets, constitute Twitter’s key commer-

cialization play. As such, they were a hot

topic when launched through Twitter’s

own site in April 2010 and then through

HootSuite in October 2010.

Experimenting with new ways of mon-

etizing your web product after consumers

have enjoyed years of ad-free or subscrip-

tion-free service can be disruptive.

HootSuite had to respond to various

levels of criticism from some users for

hosting promoted tweets.

“We had some people saying this

[was] the downfall of Rome,” recalls Ryan

Holmes, HootSuite’s president.

He likens the negative reaction from

some users to the initial response to

Google’s launch of its AdSense product,

which bloggers can use to receive shares

of revenue from ads on their websites.

“A lot of people said that it would be

the end of blogging,” says Holmes of

AdSense. “Ultimately, it provides a great

way for websites to earn money. It created

a whole new economy and a ton more

blogging content.”

Holmes says the keys to getting web

users to accept your new product are

responding to negative feedback head-on

and continually refining your product to

speak to people.

For example, one of the criticisms

that HootSuite received was that the ads

appearing in users’ Twitter streams didn’t

resonate with or have relevance to them.

Users of HootSuite’s premium, paid ver-

sions can choose not to receive promoted

tweets. The fact that the percentage of

HootSuite’s paid customers opting out of

the ads is negligible signals to Holmes that

Twitter serves relevant ads that users value.

“Its algorithm is getting pretty sophis-

ticated,” says Holmes. “It’s targeting the

right content at the right people.”

HootSuite receives a share of revenue

from the promoted tweets it syndicates,

and Holmes notes that the vast majority

of feedback about promoted tweets was

positive, so he is eager to keep HootSuite

involved with the initiative.

HootSuite is four months into its own

commercialization program.

In a so-called “freemium” subscription

model, the company has begun offering

two paid, premium versions of its Twitter

client in addition to its original free version.

Roughly three per cent of HootSuite’s

users are paid subscribers.

With positive cash flow, more than 1.5

million users and 75 Fortune 100 brands

among its paying subscribers, HootSuite is

in the top five Twitter applications.

“There [haven’t] been a lot of products

that have done this migration from free

to pay and done it in a way that doesn’t

alienate their loyal fans,” says Holmes.

HootSuite has also incorporated

Facebook and LinkedIn to become more

of a social-media dashboard than a Twitter

client.

“Our big goal was to add more func-

tionality in the paid product, as opposed

to taking away things that our free users

were used to,” says Holmes. “And we were

always transparent about the fact that

at some point we were going to head

toward this paid model.”

Thomas Stringham, president and cre-

ative director of Vancouver’s Hot Tomali

Communications Inc. observes that “these

platforms cost a lot of money to develop

and maintain” and that “the owners of

those platforms have a right to generate

some kind of revenue from them.”

Yet he adds that Twitter has to keep in

mind its free ecosystem when positioning

its promoted tweets.

“Twitter is successful because people

can get in there easily and because there

is so much information,” he says. “If Twitter

started becoming fully a paid service, I

think it would just dry up.”

Twitter hasn’t made its promoted

tweets fully available to all businesses yet,

and few Canadian companies are adver-

tising through the beta program.

Stringham notes, however, that blatant

promotion can work through Twitter,

where marketers tend to use a more con-

versational tone or maintain ongoing dia-

logue with customers rather than pitching

products. Stringham’s clients promote

contests and other calls to action.

He says it’s not so much about whether

the tweet is paid for or not as it is about the

offering or the message contained within

the tweet: “If the promotion you’re offering

is enticing enough, people will act on it.”

Media fast facts 95 per cent of Canadian households can access

broadband Internet, while 96 per cent can

access the Internet using hand-held mobile

devices.

52 per cent of Canadian Anglophones and 44

per cent of Canadian Francophones used the

Internet to watch videos in 2009. Anglophones

spend 2.2 hours per week watching TV online,

compared to 1.3 hours among Francophones.

About 35 per cent of Canadian households in

2009 subscribed to service bundles that con-

sisted of local phone service and Internet access,

video or mobile.

The large cable companies had about 56 per

cent of residential high-speed Internet sub-

scribers in 2009.

The number of mobile phone subscribers in

Canada increased by eight per cent in 2009.

Of 1,221 radio and audio services in Canada

in 2009, 41 were digital. Of these, 75 per cent

were broadcast to Anglophones, 22 per cent to

Francophones and three per cent to Allophones.

Radio usage has declined in Canada. On

average, listeners tuned in 20 hours per week in

2009, down 2.5 per cent from 2008.

Canadians prefer to watch drama and comedy

programs on TV, but the content is predomin-

antly non-Canadian. In 2009, 79 per cent of

English-language dramas and comedies, and 68

per cent of French dramas and comedies, were

non-Canadian.

Broadcast revenue increased from $14 billion in

2008 to $14.4 billion in 2009. The increase was

partially off set, however, by declines in conven-

tional television, including the CBC, and radio

advertising revenue.

This is a

comprehensive

directory of

services related

to advertising

and marketing

industries in

Vancouver and

surrounding

regions.

Listings

are arranged

by industry

category.

The Adpages directory is a comprehensive

guide to Vancouver’s media and advertising

industry, and BIV Magazines aims to provide

users with the most up-to-date information

available at press time.

Collecting and presenting the data in

an effective and user-friendly format in

the following pages is a year-long process,

involving a series of fax broadcasts, database

searches and telephone verifications.

In all, we make at least three attempts to

verify the information. If we do not receive

written or verbal confirmation that the data

about a company is correct, we have no

choice but to delete that company from

the database.

Due to space limitations, unfortunately

we are not able to guarantee inclusion of free

listings. If your company is not listed in the

directory of the advertising industry, and the

services that you provide fit into one of the

categories listed in the index, then you have

an opportunity to guarantee your listing in

the next edition. Simply call or e-mail Katherine

Butler (604-688-2398, [email protected]).

The information will be verified again before

the 2012 edition goes to press next June.

When marketers combine direct

mail with even one additional

medium such as email,

purchase intent increases by

as much as 300%.*

*Source - P Loves E study, CP 09-205 October 2009

Direct mail is three times

more likely to be opened than

promotional email.*

Direct mail puts profits in your pocket. It’s the secret weapon that puts you in front of your customer and ahead of your competitor.

Knowing how to use it is the key to your success. It’s not really a black art and the formula is fairly simple. Direct mail, done properly, can be both easy and profitable. It’s pretty basic . . . make the right offer to the right people at the right time.

Step 1 - Choose the right list. If you’ve been in business any length of time you’ll already have a customer list. These are the people you want to talk to first. It’s likely that 80% of your business comes from 20% of your customers. You know who they are, what they buy and what they are willing to pay. Talk to them.

Of course every business likes to see new customers. There are plenty of

your best customers and then test a similar offer to those people.

Step 2 - Make the right offer. When you know your customers, it’s

purchases are going to resemble what your customers purchased in the past. Take a look at that history and then determine which offer is going to best suit each person.

The most basic way to segment a list is current customers and lapsed customers. It’s simple (2 groups) and effective. It’s easy for you to deliver the message that gets the right response.

If you want to get a bit fancier, you can segment on the basis of Recency, when was the last time they bought, Frequency, how often they bought, Monetary Value, what did the spend with you. It’s called RFM segmentation. It’s a good way to break your customers into manageable groups so you can deliver a relevant message. If you need some help with it, Honeycomb Direct Mail is there for you.

Step 3 - Get noticed . . . for the right reasons. If you get mail, you know there are two piles. As you sort your mail you stand over the recycle bin. Some you keep, some you don’t. You know the routine. Honeycomb

many campaigns each year and we know how to deliver Targeted … Measurable … Results.

Hundreds of people protested Enbridge’s $5.5-billion Northern Gateway pipeline at the northern B.C. municipalities convention in Prince Rupert.

The rally and March on Thurs-day in Prince Rupert took place

just a day after a northern B.C. First Nation protest in downtown Calgary to coincide with En-bridge’s annual general meeting.

Some environmentalists had objected to Enbridge as a sponsor of the municipal convention. The company was among more than a dozen sponsors of the three-day convention, which included

companies and others such as Imperial Metals, Rio Tinto Alcan, Conifex, Pacific Northern Gas and UNBC.

Members of several First Na-tions participated in the Prince Rupert protest.

“I made a promise to our youth that if Enbridge gets to the point at which it is bringing in the bull-

dozers, I will put my body in front of it,” said Gerald Amos, a coun-cillor with the Haisla Nation.

Joy Thorkelson of the United Fishermen and Allied Workers Union noted that northern alli-ances have stopped three previ-ous proposals to bring oil devel-opment to B.C.’s North Coast, and told the crowd that they would

win against Enbridge too.Critics of the 1,170-kilometre

pipeline are opposed to the proj-ect because of the risk of an oil spill on the pipeline or from tank-er traffic on the coast.

The pipeline is meant to open up new markets for crude in Asia from the Alberta oil sands.

A Pinko Road resident is calling on authorities to take longer-term action after spending a day trapped on his property because of high wa-ter.

As of Friday, Vern Johnson was able to drive his car over the sec-

tion but only after a backhoe was brought in the day before by Yel-lowhead Road and Bridge to do some work around the culverts.

“I guess that improved the flow overnight and it’s gone down a bit,” said Johnson.

But Johnson, who has lived on the property with his wife for 38 years, said the driveway now needs

gravel. “It happens every single year but it’s worse than usual this year,” he said.

He maintained the root of the problem is that Swede Creek is overflowing on the east side of Pinko Road, where he lives, because the creek bed on the west side of the road is not accepting any water.

Fire investigators were unable to determine a cause of the blaze that killed two men this week at the Col-lege Heights Trailer Park.

“The intense heat of the fire destroyed much of the physical evidence required for conclusive establishment of the fire cause; the fire cause is therefore undeter-mined,” said John Lane, the chief-designate of Prince George Fire Rescue Service.

“The investigators were able to determine that the fire originated in the kitchen area of the trailer.”

The fire department heard of

the blaze at about 4 a.m. Tuesday morning and, by the time they ar-rived, the trailer was engulfed in flames.

The mobile home next door suf-fered heat damage but fire crews were able to spare that building

from burning. Firefighters were told that two

people were likely inside at the time of the fire and a search for them began as soon as the flames could be knocked down and the heat of the incident cooled.

Even so, the fire sparked back to life a number of times in isolated spots as that investigation went on.

“There was no evidence of any smoke detectors present in the de-bris,” said Lane.

There is still another element of the investigation underway and that is under the purview of the B.C. Coroner’s Service.
