I had an awesome youth group growing up, and we were always going on retreats. My youth leaders were ‘spiritual’ parents for me. It was such a blessing to have a Christian support group growing up! “God has given me the gift of faith, belief in His plan for my life, and WONDERFUL friendships. I think my friends notice that I genuinely care for people, and they value my honesty and sense of humor,” Kendra says. “It’s a privilege to be out in His creation, receiving HIS grace and mercy. She enjoys just being outside. Being active is a big part of her life—backpacking with her best friend, canoe- ing, playing soccer, going for a run. Quiet times can mean some quality time with friends and meaningful conversa- tions, listening to music, and enjoying a great-tasting meal, Then there’s the less serious side of Kendra—speaking in accents (which she thinks helps her sing well too), working on her ‘to do’ lists, laughing at the quirky things people do and say, little kids giggling (two-year-olds are her favor- ite!). “I just got my ears pierced two years ago, so I enjoy shopping for earrings. I never thought I’d sound so girly!” Kendra says. “My life right now is great. I’ve got my health, good friends, my family, a job I love, the girls soccer team I coach at Halifax High School, but most of all, I value God’s faithfulness … even through my doubts.” continued on the following page

As we live our lives we know that there are many who have not come to know Christ

yet. As Christians it is so important that we “Live in such a way that those who know you but don’t know God will come to know God because they know you.” With that said, remember no matter where you are during your day—whether at work, school, the grocery store, etc.—these places are your ministry, and as Christians, these places give us opportunities to repre-sent Christ.

God has presented an opportunity to me as a volunteer through Kairos Prison Ministry. On November 6 thru November 8, I will join 23 women who have been chosen to go behind bars for the first time at Muncy State Correctional Institute and interact with 24 hand-picked inmates (female). I will begin train-ing in August, two Saturdays a month, until November 6. The program consists of 15 scripture-driven presentations by various women on the Kairos team, discussions with each other after each presentation along with sharing life experiences, but most of all, we on the Kairos team will be listening.

The chance to do this work goes beyond anything I would have dreamed of, and it is all because of God that we were given the approval to go behind bars. With that said, our program cannot be done without financial help, which is

Donations go towards office supplies, meals, lodging, etc. If by any chance you would be willing to make a donation to my team—Muncy SCI #1—not only would I be grateful, but there would be many more just blown away by your generosity. Please take time to pray about this, and if your heart is willing, you can send your donations to the address below. Once the check is received you will receive a thank you note and you will also receive a letter with a receipt near tax time.

Room 2 Grow contributions

Thank you to everyone who has begun giving contributions for our Room 2 Grow ministry campaign! As more contributions come in, the

counters on Monday mornings need to know what contri-butions go where. Please make a note on either the check memo or your envelope as to what goes to Room 2 Grow and what goes to other ministries within the church. Please continue to be praying for the Room 2 Grow campaign as we continue to move forward on the project. Take the time to pray about your decision to contribute and commit to this campaign, and then turn in your pledge cards. Thank you!

The next step

Congratulations to our high school graduates from Cornerstone—

Bryce Davis and Jade Wilson from West Perry and Cobrette Bardole, Valerie Hockenberry, Ethan Reichert, Nick Sardino, and Courtney Tietje from Susquenita. Thirteen years went by so fast! Now for the next step—heading off to college, joining the military, or finding a job. We wish you well!

Make allowances for your friends’ imperfections as readily as you do for your own.H. Jackson Brown Jr.

The Prayer Room is open

Do you sometimes feel like you talk more about God than actually to Him? He wants to have a relationship with you, and in all relationships,

communication is key! We’ve developed the Prayer Room at Cornerstone to provide an opportunity for you to take time and talk to our Creator. Pray about things you are dealing with on a personal level. Pray for the church and our ministries. Pray for your family and friends. Pray for this world that we live in. Pray individually or in a group. Pray for 10 minutes or pray for an hour. Each week we’ll provide a guide with scriptures to reflect on and people from Cornerstone who are in need of prayer. The Prayer Room is open this Sunday!

Everyone’s invited but the ants

Cornerstone’s annual church picnic is Sunday, August 21 on the church property. We had such a great turnout last year that we’ve grown

too big for Little Buffalo State Park! Stay tuned for more details in the newsletter and on Sunday mornings.

Who’s in the kitchen?

Do you enjoy being in a kitchen and have a passion for serving others? Then the Hospitality Team might be the ministry for you!

The Hospitality Team is group of dedicated individuals responsible for providing coffee and snacks between the 9:30am and 11am services on Sunday mornings and light refreshments on Wednesday evenings. At times, they are also asked to help with weddings, funer-als, Vacation Bible School, Fall Frenzy, and other church-wide events. If you are interested in helping with the Hospitality Team, please contact Esther Rudy (574-7134 or [email protected]).

Dedicated to God

Sunday, July 17 is our next Child Dedication Sunday. If you would like to have

your child dedicated during the 11am service, please e-mail your child’s full name, date of birth, and weight and length at time of birth to [email protected]. We will be in touch with parents before July 17.We welcomed quite a few new

members to Cornerstone duringthe ceremony on Sunday, May 15. A total of 50

people ended up joining—our largest class ever—but the names of three people were not mentioned in last month’s newsletter. We want to be sure to welcome them to mem-bership at Cornerstone—Al and Rose Jones and Toshia Lukens. Welcome to the Cornerstone family!

iHATEreligion

Ever been burnt by church? Have you walked into a

church and sat down, know-ing that people were staring at you because of what you were wearing or who you were with, or because you had a tattoo on your arm?

Many have given up on God be-cause of religion. Many equate their bad experiences at judgmental churches with the personality of God. They think those experiences represent God.

Pastor Mike’s first book, iHATEreligion, will challenge your thinking on issues of religion, rules, rituals, and the way you’ve always done it. If you have been turned off to God and church because of what you’ve seen in churches, this book will open your eyes to the way God views the religion we sadly experience today. If you are a Christian and want a fresh perspective on religion and a relationship with God, this book is for you.

What you discover will be both eye-opening and refreshing.

Paperback copies of the book are available at the church office at a discounted cost for the Cornerstone congrega-tion of $10 from the regular price of $11.95. Hardback copies will be available August 10 for $15.95. If you would like to reserve a hardback copy, place your order at the church office and pay either when you order or when you receive the book(s). Please make your checks out to Michael Jarrell.

Building onMaryann Camacci

It seems hard to believe that the Building Blocks program has been under way for several months. We have had the opportunity to assist several individuals through the

program. I have scheduled a meeting for everyone involved in Building Blocks for Thursday, July 7 at 6:30pm. One of the topics to discuss will be Phase 2 of the task force project that occurred in April. Under the leadership of Rock Morrison, the Task Force team has the awesome respon-sibility of meeting the needs of our community by helping to repair, clean, build, and organize. Phase 1 is done, but there’s much more to do.

I am also interested in feedback from the LifeSaver and EMT group members. Bring your thoughts and ideas as we work to improve the ministry.

If you are involved with or would like to be involved in the Building Block ministry at Cornerstone, please make every effort to attend this important meeting. There are many areas where you can find a place to serve. Just talk to me or Pastor Dan to find your fit!

Success is when you are happy to go to work in the morning and happy to come back in the eve-ning, and you are very welcome and liked in both places.

Over 50—but not over the hill

Join Pastor Mike and Pastor Dan when they have

breakfast with the Over 50s on the second Wednes-day of the month (July 13)at the Marysville Diner.

The Over 50s will be up at the Ranch House on the fourth Thursday of the month for their monthly breakfast (July 28) at 9am. Good food and good conversation—that combination can’t be beat!

Be sure and go to the church picnic on Sunday, August 21!

LET’S GET TOGETHER

DOTS is taking the summer off. With so many summer activities planned

and summer vacations, we’re taking a break for the summer. Join us in September!

Let’s talk about it

Pastor Mike’s weekly Wednesday night dis-cussion class at 7pm

talks about “The Untalked-abouts”—certain topics that are never dis-cussed in church. Churches avoid con-versations about sex, alcohol, divorce, tattoos, homo-sexuality, and food habits. Pastor Mike will give a Biblical presentation of a number of the “untalkedabouts” and pro-vide clarity on many issues that are simply unclear to many people because they aren’t talked about.

Can’t be there in person? Don’t worry—Pastor Mike is recording each session and you can access them from the church Web site (www.cornerstone-efca.com. Click on the “Connect” tab and then “The Untalkedabouts.” All the ses-sions MAY be put on CDs, similar to the Leadership series, but that’s not definite. Check the weekly What’s Happening sheets and at the church office/Welcome Center for more information.

Support our soldiers

The Over 50s Group will be sending “care”

packages to our servicemen and women. Do you have a relative serving in any of the branches of our military? Please send their name, military address, and any personal or military information you’d like to share about them such as where they are stationed, how long they will be there, any special items needed. Any questions or if you need more information, please contact Kathy Morris ([email protected] or 834-5832). ALL items must be in small individual packages that can be carried in back packs. There will be a box in the church lobby near the secretary’s office window to collect the following items: Pringles chips (in small cans); pop tarts; beef jerky; rice krispie treats; sunflower seeds with shells; gum; cookies/crackers in individual packs; AA and AAA batteries; razors; shampoo, conditioner, and soaps in small sizes (like those you get in hotel rooms), and most of all—a personalized card from you to them just to thank them or let them know what is going on around home, which means more than all of the above items.

Cornerstone’s Divorce Care Group meets Mondays in the

Green Room from 7pm to 8pm.

Are you struggling with a di-vorce or separation from your spouse? Drop by the church next Monday night and see if this group can help you travel through the journey in a Godly way.

Meals on Wheels will be the week of July 18.

WOMEN’S MINISTRIES

Moms with a MissionJennifer Handke

Oh, what a glorious day! Moms with a Mission has begun to hold our summer brunches. We had a blast at Nicole Fry’s home in June.

(THANK YOU, Nicole, for hosting!)

In the summer, we meet at someone’s home, hang out, and eat good food. Our kids are kept busy playing and having fun with our babysitters while we enjoy some grown-up girl talk! We really hope you’ll be able to join us this month at my home (Jennifer Handke) at 900 New Bloomfield Road. Go west on Route 274/New Bloomfield Road from the church. It’s the farm house on the right at the corner of Montebello Farm Road and Route 274—gray with a white fence and blue roof.

If you have any questions or ideas for Moms with a Mis-sion, or you need better directions to this month’s brunch, call or e-mail Jennifer Handke ([email protected] or 497-8804).

Since the start of this project in September 2001, Pack 94 has collected 1,330 pounds of tabs (1,366 tabs = 1 pound). Continue to bring your tabs to the church kitchen and add them to the big plastic jar. If you have any questions, please contact Tom or Sue Comp (582-8098 or [email protected]).

Help for Haiti

We all know that Haiti has suf-fered devastating disasters in the past several years,

and some of you may be looking for ways to help out in relief efforts. Here’s your chance! Some of our Cor-nerstone young adults play volleyball weekly with a group of people from Capital Area Community Church and have built relationships with them. A team from that church is going to Haiti for relief work August 9–18. If you are interested in supporting the team financially, you can send your con-tribution to CACC, 1775 Lambs Gap Road, Mechanicsburg, PA 17050, or call 732-1882 for more information.

Give thanks for unknown blessings already on their way.Native American saying

Join us

Cornerstone recently had the largest membership class in its short history join the church on Sun- day, May 15. Fifty people joined that day. As the

summer months pass by all too fast, it will soon be time to plan for the fall membership classes. No date’s been set yet, but if you’re thinking about becoming a member or would just like more information, contact the church office or stop by the Welcome Center on Sunday mornings.

On the list

Congratulations to Marissa Mathieu and Alan Stidfole, who were named to the Dean’s list for the spring semester at Penn State’s University

Park campus.

Questioning the Lord gives him a chance to answer you.

The envelope, please

Effective July 1, church offerings will only be posted and recorded when you use the church’s en- velopes. The Finance Committee has decided to

no longer record loose checks from the weekly offerings. You can pick up a box of church envelopes at the Welcome Center on Sunday mornings, or contact Carol Wilfong (957-0025) or Jack Smith (834-4917). You can also con-tact Carol or Jack if you need any information about using the offering envelopes.

When filling out the envelope, please include the date, your name, and the categories/accounts and amount(s) enclosed. For example, General Fund—$100, Building Fund—$25, Benevolence Fund—$25.

Some other bookkeepingIf you’d like to have a check mailed directly to the church from your checking or savings account on a weekly or monthly basis, contact your bank for assistance in complet-ing the necessary paperwork. Using the direct mail transfer saves filling out an envelope and writing a check each time.

Also available are charitable donations from your IRA or any qualified tax-deferred plan for those individuals who are required by the IRS to start withdrawals to meet the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) starting April 1 of the year after you turn 70½ years of age. Distributions must be made directly from a traditional IRA to a qualified charity and must be outright gifts. These distributions will be excluded from your federal taxable income, and will count toward your minimum required distribution.

Your RMD is calculated each year by dividing your account balance at the end of the year by a number based on your age (from an Internal Revenue Service table). While you can perform that calculation yourself, you may find it easier to have your plan provider do it and send it to you auto-matically.

NOTE: The transfer must be made from your IRA directly to a charity; otherwise, you must declare the distribution as income. You must be age 70½ or older as of the date of the distribution. Seek advice from a financial or invest-ment advisor before starting an IRA transfer to a charitable organization.

Get moving

Aerobics is taking a vacation for the summer, and will return after Labor Day. But pickup

basketball is still going at 7:45pm on Monday evenings. And Zumba gets you moving on Thursday nights from 6–7pm. Cost for each session is $4. PLEASE NOTE—There is no Zumba on Thursday, July 7.

Deaf signing

Jessica Bentley-Sassaman generously offers her services as an interpreter for the deaf at the 9am service on Sunday mornings. If you need this ser-

vice, please try to sit in the first row on the right side of the multi-purpose room as Jessica signs the lyrics to our wor-ship music and Pastor Mike’s sermons.
