How I began to believe that the Eucharist really is Jesus It actually was Bob Dylan who got me started ... When friends told me in college that they believed that the Eucharist at Mass is not bread anymore but really Jesus Christ, truly present, I didn’t understand them. “You mean you believe the bread recalls Christ at his Last Supper, right?” I said. No, they said. They didn’t believe there was any bread there at all, a er the consecra on. There was just Jesus. He only looked like bread. Once I understood what they were saying, I thought they were crazy. In all my years a ending the Catholic church, I had never been taught anything of the kind. So first, they had to convince me the Church actually believes this. Today, the Catechism exists, and it makes this doctrine very clear. But there was no Catechism back then — and so no simple way to find out if you were hearing

real Church doctrine or someone’s peculiar ideas. I think they looked it up in Ludwig O ’s book to prove it to me. Whatever they did, I begrudgingly believed that the “Real Presence” was a real thing. Stuff we Catholics did made more sense a er that — genuflec ng before ge ng into the pew, the priests cleaning the sacred vessels, and the many rules governing who can receive Communion. Once I was convinced that the Real Presence was a real doctrine, however, I s ll thought it was crazy. Why would God want to take on the appearance of bread? Why would he want to be eaten? Bob Dylan helped me understand. A er losing my faith in high school, I only became open to Chris anity again because of Bob Dylan. I had bought all of his albums, and loved them all — even the Chris an ones. In the tle song from his album Saved, Dylan concisely summed up his Protestant beliefs this way: “I was blinded by the devil / Born already ruined / Stone-cold dead / As I stepped out of the womb / By His grace I have been touched / By His word I have been healed / By His hand I’ve been delivered / By His Spirit I’ve been sealed / I’ve been saved / By the blood of the Lamb.” And then he repeated it: “Saved, by the blood of the Lamb.” I bought what he said — to a point. I saw how Dylan could be “born already ruined.” We are all connected by blood to Adam, and so his decision to align himself with sin defined me just as one grandfather’s move from Kansas to Arizona and the other grandfather’s move from El Salvador to Mexico. But how could Jesus’ blood get from Pales ne two millennia ago to save Bob Dylan, or me, today? It does so spiritually, the Protestants believe. But I couldn’t believe in that. God did things in a much more natural way than that in every other instance I knew of. If God wanted the blood of Jesus to reverse what I had inherited from the blood of Adam, I thought, that blood had to actually be in me. And that’s when I got it. “Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life with in you,” Jesus said, “For my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink.” He scared people with that kind of talk, reports John— but he meant it. The apostles must have been relieved when they realized the role bread and wine would play in this inges on of blood. St. Paul described it a couple decades a er the Last Supper, in about the year 53. That was it. You were saved by the blood of Jesus directly — not spiritually. Even Bob Dylan seemed to acknowledge it later in his career, when, a er leaving his Chris an sect, he sang, “I never could learn to drink that blood and call it wine.” Scriptures filled out the picture for me. One in par cular. Lots of Scriptures suddenly take on new life, when you see that God is preparing the way for the Eucharist: Melchizedek’s bread and wine, the Manna in the desert, the Passover Lamb and the mul plica on of the loaves. But one made the most sense to me for the first me: The supper at Emmaus. In the story, Jesus meets two of his disciples a er his death. They don’t recognize him un l he breaks bread — then he disappears. That never sounded real to me. Again, I didn’t like spiritualizing Jesus. He did earthy miracles, with water and spit and mud. He didn’t do magician’s tricks like vanishing into thin air. But I was willing to admit he would do something odd like that if he was trying to communicate something earthy. But what was he trying to communicate? The Eucharist makes it clear: I am no longer with you in this form (my body) but in this form (bread). And so, I believed. And s ll do. OFIARA MSZY ŚWIĘTYCH Eucharys a jest „źródłem i zarazem szczytem całego życia chrześcijańskiego”. To z niej płyną niezliczone łaski.

ON SENDING THE RIGHT GUY, INSPIRED SCRIPTURE, AND GREG Copyright 2019 by John B. Reynolds ([email protected])

I was up earlier than usual three Mondays back and was heading out the door for work shortly a er 5:00 AM when my cell phone sounded. I thought of the last line of a poem I wrote maybe forty years ago now: “Nothing good befalls early morning calls.” It was Maria asking if my wife Gail and I could get over to her Aunt Manira’s house right away, and telling us that she’d be there soon. Seems Manira had found her husband Greg--Gail’s brother--nonresponsive that morning. She immediately called Maria and 911. Maria immediately called 911, too, then me. When Gail and I arrived ten minutes later, the paramedics were s ll at work, but they couldn’t bring Greg back. He was 69. Manira was inconsolable in that dawn madness. A Park Ridge police officer whose name escapes me was the first responder, arriving right a er the first 911 call. He went through his revival techniques before the paramedics showed up moments later. The officer told me that they in turn went through their resuscita on protocol mul ple

mes, but to no posi ve end (the paramedics later told us this directly). Finally, the officer told me that Manira--who I came to learn tried to resuscitate Greg herself before help arrived--had done everything she could, and everything right. It may take years for her to fully understand and appreciate this. Some mes, I guess, we just don’t wake up. The officer told me that his team works with religious affilia ons offering chaplain services at mes such as these. Knowing that Greg and Manira some mes joined us for Midnight Mass, I asked for a priest. His name escapes me, too, but soon a Polish priest from St. Paul of the Cross showed up. He pulled back the sheet covering Greg’s

body, anointed his forehead with oil, and asked God to guide him home. Powerful. Then, just before leaving, he no ced a small Venezuelan flag on the front room mirror. He asked Manira if she was from there. When she said yes, he launched into prayers in Spanish, and Manira responded in turn. When God sends a priest, God sends a priest. And when God inspires Scripture, God inspires Scripture. From

Ecclesiastes, “Here is one who has labored with wisdom and

knowledge and skill, and yet to another who has not labored over it,

he must leave property.” How topical: Greg was a den st--an excellent

one--for decades. Next, Jesus tells of the man with a plen ful harvest

who tears down his barns to build larger ones to be er store his grain

so he could then eat, drink and be merry for years and years to come.

When God demands his life that very night, Jesus says “Thus will it be

for all who store up treasure for themselves but are not rich in what

ma ers to God.” I came to learn about a week before Greg’s death

that he did not embrace the faith as I thought he did. OK. But if anyone

in his or her life me was rich in the things that ma er to God--love,

compassion, friendship, family--Gregory Weathers, DDS was. Yes,

some mes we just don’t wake up. I believe with all my heart, though,

that when we fall asleep rich in the things that ma er to God, God

knows, and God does precisely as the Spanish-speaking Polish priest

from St. Paul of the Cross implored on Greg’s behalf on that sad, sad

Monday morning. I believe that God does indeed guide us home.
