We are pleased to present the 2008 ad journal. In your hands is proof that we are acommunity that understands, values and supports our 87-year-young continuum of care seniorfacility. Despite this challenging economy, the 2008 ad journal raised a total of $321,000 andremains our largest annual fund-raiser.

Daughters of Miriam Center/The Gallen Institute distinguishes itself by seeking andachieving accreditation from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of HealthcareOrganizations. We proudly note that we are the only Jewish long-term care facility inthe entire State of New Jersey to meet the Commission’s high standards of care, farexceeding government guidelines. DMC achieves such excellence because of its people. Fromthe nurses, staff and administration, to the Board of Trustees and volunteers, the Center is filledwith people who create a community of caring, dignity and respect, following Jewish traditionsand values. Our parents and grandparents who live here depend on the staff and we, the donors,have many reasons to be proud of our support.

Renovation work continues on the second floor, with an anticipated opening in the Fallof 2009. Naming opportunities still exist for this new wing as well as the third and fourth floorswhich offer a very meaningful opportunity for a special donor or family. We are available todiscuss these and other possibilities with you at any time, and invite you to come visit and seethe changes taking place at the Center.

We, the Board of Trustees, will continue to work hard to ensure that this facility willalways be here to serve our Jewish community, providing these very necessary services for ourseniors and fulfilling our responsibility and obligation to future generations.

Akey component of Daughters of Miriam Center’sstrategic plan was the development of a modern,barrier-free rehabilitation or subacute care facility.

The rehabilitation facility underwent a total transformation,resulting in a bright and airy open floor plan which makes iteasy to navigate with walkers and wheelchairs. The gleamingwood floors give the room a warm feeling, welcoming seniorsand putting them in a positive frame of mind as they arrive fortherapy. Flowering plants and subtle wallpaper add to thehome-like feeling which pervades the physical and occupationaltherapy suite. Other improvements were less obvious, such asthe new, well-insulated windows which keep nursing homeresidents, apartment tenants and day program clientscomfortable as they work to maintain flexibility and balance, orto regain their strength after surgery or injuries.

The Gallen Institute for Subacute Care offers a wide varietyof modalities to treat the varied needs of the seniors who cometo us. Whether patients need intense short-term rehabilitationfor hip and knee replacements, amputations, hip and kneefractures or post-stroke recovery, or if they require medicallycomplex services such as extended IV therapy, post surgicalstabilization, comprehensive wound care or enteral nutritionaltherapy, the Institute provides them with the highest qualitycare. The rehabilitation staff works together with the medicaland nursing staff on an individualized interdisciplinary careplan for each patient to achieve the best results.

New equipment aids staff as they work to help seniorsmaintain, or regain, their highest level of physical function.Separate stations around the room incorporate a wide varietyof modalities to accommodate the specific needs of eachindividual. Stairs, parallel bars, free weights, and aerobicmachines, such as recumbent bicycles and treadmills, help buildstrength and balance. Occupational therapy workspaces allowpatients to regain flexibility needed for everyday tasks.Curtained stations ensure staff can work with patients inprivacy whenever required.

A separate section of the subacute department is theoccupational therapy area which is complete with a mockbathroom. With hard surfaces that quickly turn slippery asthey get wet, bathrooms can be the most dangerous place in thehome. This setup allows therapists to teach patients the safestway to navigate a bathroom and avoid serious injury.

“Everyone appreciates the new space,” commentedRehabilitation Services Director Kimberly Topchiev. Sheadded, “We are very proud of this new facility which combinesthe functionality of the latest modalities with a warmhome-like feeling so our seniors actually look forward to theirtherapy sessions.”
